Just curious about what the opinions out there are about the weight-loss challenge that Dr. Phil has started.
We watched the initial program last Friday, with Katie Couric, and
after watching that, my DH was motivated to be on the SBD with me. So this week we have watched and today saw the candidates that were picked. Quite a variety of people, and Dr. P. said that he wanted all types of problems so that the viewers could identify with who they are.
I think it will be interesting to watch what happens with each of the 13 people. I figure that maybe I'll learn something about myself in the process. One thing I know, I just enjoy food, and I enjoy cooking it. So making all these new recipes to stay OP has been a challenge for me. It is so much easier now that I can cook for the two of us, rather than having to prepare 2 separate meals.
So we will see. I'll be waiting to hear all your opinions. Lizzie
Didn't see the Dr. Phil show, when is it on? I would be very interested in it. I think alot of my eating is emotional just not sure what the emotion is
I bought his book and I have enjoyed reading it....I really like his 'tell it like it is' attitude. The book makes really good points and, is well worth the money. It turned on a few lights for me.

Help! I seldom watch daytime TV. What is the name of the book and what the ehck is Dr. Phil's real name so I can look it up on Amazon or Chapters? Thanks.
I don't watch TV during the day very often. I have only seen the man's show twice. IMHO, he is riding the wave of popularity now and cashing in on it. As for his book, I'd like to read it, if only to see what he has to say about eating.

Tippy I agree with you, I think he's just a fad getting as much as he can off of society and then poof he'll be gone. I know he's good at counceling (or so I suspect) but what does this man really know about "health, nutrition, diets." My other BIG question would be, has he ever had to struggle like we do here ? I don't know I just have my doubts.
BUT !!! on the other hand, if he can emotionally point out and help people with their emotions, than I believe he can do that.
I would have to read more into exactly what he is doing with these guinea pigs.
I guess I'm to old and been dooped to many times to trust another fly by TV personality with my problems.
I love Dr. Phil, his father died from heart disease secondary to obesity. His entire family struggles with weight including himself. For 20 years of his practice he worked with morbid obesity clients. Since his practice is in one of the highest rate of obesity in the country, that would make sense.
Oprah really began her ultimate weight loss journey when she began to work with Dr. Phil, she didn't diet with him, but she worked on her emotional issues around food with him, and she is a perfect poster child for the hard work and many elements that go into sucessful weight management.
Dr. Phil basically has stated that he is using his popularity to address this issue in a big way. Because he keeps telling people that the work is not a quick fix it will be interesting to see how he is going to fulfill on his promise to help America lose the weight, but more importantly keep it off.
Every diet works to some degree, the level of how healthy diets are is debatable and which ones are more suited to each individual, but it doesn't matter how you get rid of the weight, what ultimately challenges us all staying where we want to be, that I believe is what Dr. Phil is speaking about, real life changes that will keep you where you want to be.
I remember that Low Carbing was very popular back in the 70's and it lost popularity and it wasn't until the 90's that is got a rebirth, so just because something fades away doesn't necessarily mean that it is a bad thing, sometimes society isnt ready to hear the message.
I think that what we are all doing here on the boards and sharing is what Dr. Phil is teaching, support, change, goals, declarations hard work, most all of us on these boards know that. I am going to try to follow the challenge, just for the fun of it and see what I can learn.
Just my thoughts......along with my bias of my adoration for Dr. P.
I've always thought that Dr. Phil tells people what they allready know. It's just funny how when someone say's it to you it suddenly click's. I don't think that it's going to help alot of people because most people want a quick fix , and don't want to change their whole life.I really like Dr. Phil and his tell it like it is attitude , but I think they don't want to hear what he has to say in this matter becuase it's hard work.
Rowan: I'm in agreement with you too. If a personality in a national spotlight can use their expertise to help others, more power to them. I thought it was very interesting that the 13 people he chose are from all walks of life, and also have all different issues with eating. He said that he wanted to find all different examples so that all of us watching could find someone we could identify with.
In our particular area the program is on at 5:00p.m. every afternoon. I suspect that the time is probably close to that everywhere because they want to catch people who are in the work force, and can't watch daytime t.v.
I think that much of what he has said about lifetime change, is what we are all practicing right here. And we all know that there is no 'quick fix'. I also think we can and do support each other, but don't get into the emotional reasons for eating, and I suspect that Dr. Phil will dig into those, painful as it might be, so that lifetime changes can happen. You all know as we have shared with each other, how many times and how long we have all been on the 'diet' circuit, to lose, and only gain it right back. And it can't just be a loss of 'will power'.
He was very deliberate with each person, about being truly willing to have cameras in their homes, be tracked and followed and have him call on them for surprise visits. And to make sure that each one knew that they were going to have to make difficult changes, maybe even a job change or change of friends, to enable them to get off the so-called 'eating merry-go-round.
So- we'll see. I plan to watch and keep track and try to make a mix of it all.
Leens & Tippy: No attacks. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. I have never thought that he was just a fly-by-night, and I know that I tend to be an optimist, right up until the time I get zapped.
I just can't believe that all of those people are being set up for failure and disappointment. Of course alot will depend on them and their true dedication to changing their lives.
I am of the opinion that 'whatever works' do it. If it is a combination of things so be it. Or if it is just one idea. Just make it work for ourselves. Lizzie
Guess I'm out of touch, what is his diet challenge? I have heard about his new diet book, but haven't seen it myself (I do have a couple of his other books). Is he doing this diet challenge on his show?
Yes, by choosing 13 people he will work with, but each with specifically different problems. And viewers will be able to work along with them. Because there will be someone that we might identify with. They were chosen out of more than 7000 tapes that were sent in. I think individuals are supposed to be able to go to his web page and follow along. Haven't figured that one out yet.

I saw the Dr. Phill program and he is not quoting a specfiic diet like Sugar Busters, or South Beach, He is supose to show you how to attack dieting both mentally and using common sense on what and how you eat. Like no supersizing meals, fast foods are crap, stay away from french fries, Eat small portions, ect ect.
I agree we are overweight for various reasons, and we are still looking for a silver bullet. The main reason some of these good diets do not work is instead of following them, we are always trying to find some way to cheat in a legal way so we can have our cake and eat it too. That is why we do not keep losing weight is we really do not want to change our way of life enought for it to work. If we did not allow cheat foods in our house and mouths we would win the battle. But no we want to find a way to make it fit us more than we fit it. It is that simple and actually so simple we can not accept it. I have been on ediets, adkins and lost 38 pounds and kept it off for 18 months now and this is the first time in 35 years that has happened.I still need to lose 25 more pounds, and if I did quite trying to find a way to cheat , I would be at my ideal weight..
On all the boards all I see is can we have this or that and we know darn well 90% of the time the answer is NO.Read the book and follow it. If you were going to drive to a different State and did not use a road map, and instead took turns we thought would be nicer or more comfortable we would never arrive there.Sounds like Dr Phil well thats the way he is going to tell it. Sorry folks if I upset anyone as I know this is a very very touchy subject. We have to change our thinking and the way of life and the reason we are all here is we are trying and refuse to give up and thats the best start yet. So lets dig in and help each other be postive and be honest with each other and win this darn war.
