I have started of the week with 25 mins jogging in place, 30 mins cycling & 5 mins rowing. The excercise made me feel good. Target this week is to get into clean food mode again. The kids are back to school so I can now slip into the normal routine.
I had a great weekend... Food wasn't perfect but it wasn't that bad ... I worked out Saturday by jogging to the gym (20 mins) working out back then jogging in a mini blizard (40 mins)... I felt great... Sunday I jogged 60 minutes around the neighbourhood and I felt great ! Later in the evening I went for a walk with a g/f because she had overstuffed herself at our Chineese Food dinner...We do this every year and it's now tradition. I was really proud that I hadn't overly stuffed myself and still felt comfortable after leaving the table....
I have a question:
Does one tell a friend she's getting overweight? What I try to do with this friend is talk about working out and eating well without sounding like I am bragging, in the hopes that she will get the hint...What do you guys think...
nelie -- Welcome Back I sure missed your recipe ideas... That Pita Pizza sounds really good...
SusanB -- Good for you for getting rid of the cookies... my suggestion was going to be Meg's idea to drizzle some dishsoap on them then you'd have no choice than to throw them out! ....
Ilene, that's a good question and a tough one...I would feel hesitant asking it...I have a number of very overweight friends and I keep my mouth shut. What I have done is do something that requires exertion with them, and if they are huffing and puffing, try to bring it up in a round about way...or just suggest moderate level physical activities together to encourage them to workout more...or invite them for a healthy dinner and perhaps if the atmosphere is right, and they say something, bring it up. It is a delicate balance, and tough to approach.
Nelie...so glad you are back. I was wondering how you are. The Pita Pizza sounds great.
I am in the process of making a major decision, which is going to sound nutsy since I still have about 20 pounds to lose. I will be retiring in about 4 years (I hope), and I have been trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up (grin). I thought, next to doing my art, what do I love...it is working out. So...I am going to start studying to become a personal trainer. It will keep me going on my own quest, it will be something I can do part time, do anywhere I live, and even if I never reach goal, will give my a lot of knowledge into my own process. Does that sound too crazy? Plus, I have a certificate in gerontology, which would help me, I think, in getting a job training older people. I am really excited, have been reading up about it on line, and have reserved a bunch of books at the library. With all the baby boomers, and the growth in the recreational industry, it just seems like a natural.
Hi everyone. Just getting a break between my cardio and upper body workout. Letting my breakfast settle. I got new walking boots and tried them out this morning! I love them! Simple pleasures...
Ilene - I guess it depends on your friend and your friendship. If my friend told me, hinted to me or involved me in activity to have the opportunity to tell me I need exercise, I would be really, really mad. If I felt like someone was trying to hint at me or otherwise maneuver me, yep, I would be furious.
Most likely, she knows she's put on a few pounds. She can tell how her pants fit. How fast she gets worn out. She probably feels bad about it already. To have her friend bring it up may have some really negative consequences.
She may be open to some kind of input, though. If so, I would suggest you be up front. No more hinting or 'suggesting'. Tell her you're a little concerned and why, if you say anything. But that's just my view. Now if she asks for input, that's an entirely different story.
artmaker - I think studying to be a personal trainer is a great idea! Art is great (I dabble) but I need more so I have dogs.
Well, I've learned that my real challenge for this year is to get myself motivated, and keep myself motivated, without insulating myself from the temptations of the "real world". In the past I've always been able to purge my house/environment of all things deemed not on plan, and then I don't have to be strong - the stuff is just not available. However, so far this year, I'm doing much more socially - both with a bf, and with friends, and I've not been able to resist and stay on plan.
So, today is yet another new day, new start. I'm glad to see Nelie back - you've been such a SB motivation for me in the past... And thanks for the recipe - you always do have some great ones. Speaking of recipes, I miss Tidey for her great ones as well
Wonder how all those gals are doing - Dip, Nola, Tidey, JC, GG,.... If any of you are lurking, please do drop in and let us know how you're doing.
I did a workout-lite this morning, for chest and shoulders. I'm still sore from shoveling snow on Saturday, so I thought I'd better not overdo it.
Wow - lots of budding trainers out there! I have to admit that I've thought about it myself, but not right now - I have enough with my current career and maintaining a house on my own to fit it in right now. Good luck to all of you who are, however.
Well, need to get back to work - hope everyone is having a great day!
Cindy
A belated happy b-day to Pat, and welcome back Nelie! Hope you had a great time in CA (and didn't get washed away).
I have to agree with the "keep your mouth shut" angle re talking to a friend about their weight. If they bring it up, it's ok to mention what has been working for you, but it's not like she doesn't know... There have been many times that I've known I should lose weight, but for one reason or another I wasn't equipped to tackle it properly. There were probably some times I should have just chilled out instead of making my binging tendencies worse.
I am really excited, though, it's my Nia class tonight and I got a friend to come with me. I'm getting into my new winter schedule for workouts and so far, so good. Food wasn't great this weekend, but I made veg barley soup last night, for leftovers for lunch.
I did my full body workout today, 25 minutes on the treadmill and 20 minutes on the bike. I am closer to where I was before I got sic, but not quite ther yet. I have the time down, noe this week I need to work on the intensity! Tomorrow is my first private yoga session and I am pretty excited.
Boy artmaker, it sounds like you and are in the same place tihnking about this personal training. I hope we can share the results of our investigations and motivations as we go through this thought process. I have about 30 more pounds to lose (I think) so this is really a year away before i give it any serious consideration. Right now it is in a good place - fantasy and daydream.
Ilene - I understand your predicement and don't have an easy answer. How good a friend is she? Can you say anything? HAve you ever told her ahaircut was awful? How about coming at it from a different angle: "Gee Sally, you don't look like you are feeling right. I s there anything you want to talk about?" and see where that leads. It may not be the weight, but the weight may be a symptom of something bigger (i.e., comfort eating or drinking). Or, it just could be the blouse she was wearing yesterday or hormones. See how she looks next week.
So, let me ask: what do you normally eat before and after you work out? I have been eating the same thing: 1/4c plain non-fat yogurt, 2 T pumpkin puree mixed with a little splenda and lots of cinnamon, 1 T Uncle Sam on top and a handful of blueberries or a quarte of an apple (I call it my mock pumkin pie. If Ilene can have a pancake I can have pie). It seems to be balanced (carb, protein and a little fat from the flaxseed in the cereal) and in line with Superfoods Rx. And it tastes pretty yummy!
Before I work out, I have an egg, a veggie 'sausage' pattie (morningstar farms) and a piece of ww toast. Afterwards, I either have a protein/carb balanced drink or nothing until lunch. It depends on what my body is telling me. If I feel super 'noodley', I have the drink.
Ilene, I'm gonna stick with everyone else. Don't say a word but be an example. Naturally for you, because it is part of your life, nutrition and fitness will come up in conversation. You'll soon find out if she wants to hear more or NOT.
No expert here but I carb first and protein after. I think I read that at bodybuilding.com. Tried it and it feels good for me. Fat free yogurt with fruit and then a shake.
Thank you girls for your input ... I knew in my heart of hearts that keeping my mouth shut is the best thing ... I love her to death and would never ever want to hurt her feelings ... I put myself in her shoes and I know I would not be happy ... and I'm sure she knows her pants are too tight she had a difficult time putting her shoes on when she left...
ellenuw -- you say your meal is balanced but where is the protein, unless you mean the protein in the yogurt... just wondering because there isn't a whole lot of protein in yogurt... Before workouts I eat, 1/2 c. oatmeal (dry), 1/2 c. soy milk, 1 tsp Udo's oil, 1 tsp ground flax, add splenda to taste I also put a capsule of Glucosamine, and some Glutamine... I know it's weird ... I let that sit and absorb the milk while I make a 4 oz eggwhite omelette ... I usually eat the same when I come back a few hours later ... I seem to need carbs and protein before and after my workouts... I usually work out in the morning so I take it easy on the carbs for the rest of the day after these 2 meals...
Hmmm, since I usually work out after work, I seldom have anything special. Maybe I should? Today for instance, I had two eggs and some ww bread for lunch at noon, and an apple about 3. Right now, about 4:20, I'm starving! Trying to decide what I can eat that will sit well for working out. I can run by the store on the way to the gym and eat something in the car - like yogurt. I can usually manage that without spilling. Oh, wait, I have an aged luna bar in my desk drawer. That should help.
I always eat before I workout, at least 1 full carb-protein meal. I usually do my workouts after meal two, which is just a protein shake. Then I race home for a carb-protein meal. I go really light on carbs the rest of the day.
When I was trying to lose significant body fat, I did cardio on an empty stomach. I found it was much more effective at fatburning, but really required that I do it first thing in the morning. Now my focus is more on cardio health and weight maintenance, so I just fit the cardio in to my schedule and don't worry about whether or not I've eaten.
Leg day was fun today I had a partner for a change It's really hard to find a lifting partner when you don't have a regular workout time, so it's a real treat for me when I can find a friend a the gym who is not a client.
Lots of budding trainers all of a sudden....Have to warn you...if you work out of a gym, the hours are lousy and the pay is worse But even if you don't intend to train, the knowledge is very useful for training yourself.
Thanks for the wake up call ladies. I thought I was getting enough protein from the yogurt. I just looked at the carton and realized it was only 3 g. I will try to add some soy protein powder I have tomorrow and see how that tastes and see if it makes a difference.
Ilene - with you pancake recipe - is that cooked oatmeal or the raw that you use in the "batter"?
I did eat the aging Luna bar, and it certainly helped my gnawing stomach, if not my workout! It has significant protein for the calories/size. I'm not crazy about any of those bars however, and tend mostly to keep them at work for emergencies or take on a plane given what they feed you - or rather mostly don't feed you - anymore. The upside of that is that I'll never binge on them.
Had a decent leg workout and bettered my time slightly on a mile on the elliptical. I do need to hit cardio harder to do some serious fat burning. I just can't seem to build up any enthusiasm for it. A common complaint, I know. I think after vacation I'll burn some new CDs (unless I've talked myself into the iPod) for variety.
