Default New Here

I just found the forum strictly by chance and joined earlier tonight. It looks like a great support place - and support is always a welcome bonus when it comes to health and fitness.

To introduce myself - my name is Angie. I started my path to health and fitness in January of this year. It had reached the point where I was having continuous health problems and finally I just got tired of it. I've been up and down the weight scale my whole life due to having a thyroid condition.

I've lost 70 pounds thus far this year and am feeling great! I work out several times a week at my local Curves gym.

Look forward to making new friends and giving what support I can in return!

Thank you very much Marti for the very warm and only welcome. *grin* It does seem like a great group and I can see it could probably get a little overwhelming though with all the information going around.

Seems like a great place to be though and I'm looking forward to it.

Default Hello!

Welcome! I'm new here, too (just joined today). I have had hypothyroidism for 20 years and my weight loss has been excruciatingly slow (it took me a year to lose 35 pounds via healthy eating and regular exercise). If you don't mind me asking, what method did you use for losing the weight? For example, was it just healthy eating, Atkins or what?

I think that losing 70 pounds in 6 months for someone with a thyroid condition is astounding. I'm envious! Congrats!

Hi Sheria! And sounds like I should be welcoming you to the 3FC forums as well. Thank you for the welcome! In terms of my method I not only watched what I ate but I tended to keep my daily fat intake between 15-20% of my daily allowances. This means I ate a lot of whole grains, fruits, veggies and poultry. I tend to work out between 5-6 times a week so I just hit my metabolism stride. Ever since then, I have continued to have a steady weight loss.

Hi, Angie and SheriaVa,

Well, let's just start the Dysfunctional Thyroids Annonymous Newbie thread, shall we??

I'm Rae, 47 years old, hypothyroidism since age 27 (from Hashimoto's Disease) and have also done the yo-yo thing for many years. However, as much as I'd like to scowl exclusively at the hypothyroidism, I really can't... I have personally contributed to the problem a great deal. Which is not to say that the hypothyroidism hasn't made it that much more difficult when I'm committed to losing weight.. but, well, my natural inclinations toward beer, chocolate and immobility might have SOMETHING to do with it, too!!

It's been a rough year. I was terminated from a job in March for the first time in my life, for reasons that were never clearly revealed to me. I suspect it had to do with a treacherous co-worker, but I don't know for sure. Not an experience I care to repeat. Prior to this job, which I held for a year, I worked as a judge's assistant for 14 years and was highly regarded in my field. So quite a shock to me to be summarily sacked. But what can we do, eh? I have chosen to move on, and after cowering in my self-imposed isolation for the past 4 months, it's time to get on with life. So...

it's back to the Weight Watchers program with me, with which I've always had good success, and walking, walking, walking. Fortunately, my wonderful husband rises each morning at 4:30 a.m. to be at his job by 5:30, so I just waddle on out the door right behind him and don't come home until I've waddled for at least 30 minutes -- the goal being to waddle for 45-60 soon. Weight training soon to follow.

I'm 5' 9", starting weight 236. I started 5 days ago and have no scale.. but my clothes will keep me honest -- and motivated! I'll frankly be thrilled with any goal weight hovering around 160.

Sheria, I'm inspired by you! To have the stick-to-itiveness to get through a year and lose 35 pounds, well, you're a hero! Keep it up -- you're awesome!

Angie, what a fabulous accomplishment, 70 pounds! I think your focus on whole grains, fruits, vegetables and lean meats is very wise. I am doing the same thing, staying away from processed foods as much as possible. I'll look forward to learning some of your tricks!

Anyway.. nice to "meet" you both, and let's see how we go, shall we?

All the best, Rae
