Smile Determined to get healthy but no idea where to start?

I have no idea where to start. My doctor just tells me to "eat healthy/drink water/exercise". Okay - but what does all of tha entail? How much water a day? Is 64 ounces really helpful in losing weight or do I drink more than that? What exactly IS eating healthy? Does that mean to watch the sodium content, the sugar content, the fat content, all of the previous mentioned? Is walking a good start to exercise for someone that feels uncomfortable going to the gym right now?

Any advice that someone is willing to give on HOW to get started - I would very much appreciate. I know there are programs out there like WW and such, but I'd really like to avoid those types of programs. I'm not looking for a miracle. I'm willing to put in the time and work into getting healthier. If I can just drop 10 or 20 lbs in the next 6 months, I'd be quite happy with that. I have to start somewhere - I just don't know "how".

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to 3FC! Look around and settle in. Maybe check out the calorie counting forum, cause at the end of the day, that's what works well for many people.

The good old food pyramid is now a plate...they recommend your meal be 1/2 fruits and veggies, 1/4 lean protein and 1/4 whole grains. A little dairy too. If you generally stick with these (fruits, veggies, lowfat dairy, lean protein, whole grains) with 1/2 of your intake being fruits and veggies...you are eating healthy and don't necessarily need to follow a structured plan. You can deviate from those guidelines and eat fats/sugars, but have to really keep those to a minimum. Lots of people (like me), to lose weight, do need to do the calorie/point counting thing though

Walking is awesome exercise. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week, but am always amazed at how a simple brisk walking workout can be better exercise than the machines.

Use Myfitnesspal.com to start tracking your calories so you get an idea of what you're actually eating (you may be shocked) vs. How many calories you should be eating. It will tell you what your daily allowance is based on your height and weight, not everyone is the same. You can also track exercise. Walking is a great way to start if you're not comfortable with the gym. Hang around here for accountability and like the other poster said; visit the 'calorie counting' forum for good tips/advice. Good luck and welcome.
