Default Weird new habit... can it turn into something bad?

Wooo!! Hope you guys are ready for CaramelKitty's weird Thursday morning post~ LOL

Okay so lately, because I'm being really strict, I've had a tendency of putting something yummy (cake, candy, chocolate) in my mouth and getting some of the taste in my mouth then spitting it out.

I don't know why I do that, I guess maybe because I really want the taste but not the extra calories.

And I know I'm probably ingesting calories just by sucking on it, so please don't treat me like an idiot, I just want to know if anyone has gone through this and does it have a risk of developing some type of disorder?

I've suffered from ED's in the past but I've lost the weight the healthy and honest way this time, so I'm just afraid that my head might get stuck in that old rut that it was.

And if that's the case, I'd rather work on stopping this now.

Please tell me I'm not the only one that does this.

Oh and just for the record, I don't do it ALL DAY LONG. I'll do it once in a while, if there's something around and just to avoid further cravings..

Oh gosh does this even make sense? I apologize in advance for the confusion.

I just did it the other day and said "I should never do that again"

I think it's pretty mentally unhealthy to do so because I've heard of many eating disorders that have started like that. It becomes a habit like you said and it's not a good one. Eventually you'll do that with almost anything you ingest LOL I guess it also depends on the type of person you are, if you feel like you can stop at just once in a while it's fine. But otherwise, that idea kind of scares me to be honest.

Omgosh, you're completely right, what if I start doing that with meals? :

I think I'm gonna work on preventing myself from doing so now, because the thought of it being more often frightens me.

I am not sure what it may lead to or if it will stay just being what it is. You aren't alone though; I actually lick all of the seasoning off of Doritos and get rid of the actual chips lol! My boyfriend thinks I am crazy.

Slippery slope. Don't do it if you can avoid it.

I've done that before, with breadsticks when I worked at Pizza Hut Express ha

Chewing and spitting is eating-disordered behavior. I would most certainly warn against it as it could lead to other food issues, especially since you say that you have struggled with EDs in the past.

This is actually a "diet" that some people have done, called the "Chew and Spit" and it is considered by some to be a type of eating disorder, or at the very least, something that can lead one down the path to an eating disorder.

I've done it a couple of times, but more in the "Oh, what am I doing starting to eat this! I really don't want this - spit it out before that hits the stomach!" And another time, "Ack, I can't eat that now, I need to have an empty stomach for my thyroid medicine!"

I think it's much better to take one bite of something, savor it, feel it in the mouth and then eat it. Leave it at that.

I know this is from a teen's health article, but it does give more info:

I have done this in the past and while it didn't lead to ED, it didn't take long for that one bite chew/spit was enough. I'd get a taste and want more. The beginning of the end of several past attempts at weight loss.

I did that one time. My husband saw me (I wasn't trying to hide it- I thought it was a BRILLIANT idea lol) and got extremely upset with me. He said from his eyes it just looked like an eating disorder in the making, so I never did it again.

I can certainly see how this type of behavior could potentially lead to an eating disorder. However, it doesn't seem like it's that's much different than chewing gum. I chew gum pretty much all day because it's a way for me to get a taste of sweetness without the extra calories.

Wow I'm overwhelmed with the replies, thank you so much guys!!

My fiance gives me a dirty look because I started doing it when I crave the goodies that are in front of me, but it all started because of him! LOL

Once he was eating cake and I took a bite and he told me SPIT IT OUT, YOU'LL B**TCH ABOUT THIS LATER lol

So I did. :| I told him to keep an eye out on me, and to make sure it doesn't get out of control.

berryblondeboys thank you for the article!~ Very great read. I think I will stop considering these foods as forbidden, I'll just have one little piece of candy and walk away if I really wanna have it.

LOL @ the breadsticks and doritos! I am so glad I'm not alone!

It does sound like suspect behavior so I'm glad you're stopping. I smell foods I won't eat but I never taste them - it does give me some pleasure. It's weird so I only do it with my husband's food in our home. Thankfully I've never given in to eating the food after smelling it so I guess the strategy is working.

Totally slippery slope. I've been there and it gotta outta hand FAST.

It's better to just keep that stuff away from my face, period.

I know you would never, but this made me think of my niece being seen pulling the ice cubes out of the lemonade stand *pitcher* and sucking on it, then putting it back in. Only time Grandpa refused to support grandkid commercial ventures.
