I saw the documentary "Fathead" recently and there were a lot of interesting ideas (note: I am not saying these are facts, just ideas) being presented regarding fat vs. carbs. If you have seen it, what are your thoughts?

Sounds like what I've been reading (and believing!) in Good Calories, Bad Calories and I see that Gary Taubes is on the movie website's recommended reading list. I'll definitely watch it with my husband because he doesn't read as much as I do and wouldn't commit to something like GCBC.
Well if it's on Netflix instand I'm going to have to watch it. =)
You can also watch it for free online -- that's what I did. I believe it's on Hulu.
I totally agree with the principal that FAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU FAT! Trans fats or fats along with a bunch of carbs can make you fat.
I eat a lot of fats from whole healthy sources, including animal fats (primarily grass fed or free range- also seafood and venison), avocado, olive oil, occasional cheese/butter. My carbs come from tons of vegetables (salads, kale, spinach, kale chips, carrots, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, mushrooms, etc. etc.), some fruits (not every day, but I eat apples, berries, and other fruit), not bread, crackers, cereals, etc.
I feel great, my body composition has changed, I'm not starving all the time.
I wish I had learned all this info sooner.

I watched this last week and it was a real eye-opener. I looked back in my calorie tracker and can see that at a consistent calorie intake (within a couple hundred up or down), the higher my carbs, the more likely the scale would stop or creep up. I'm going to drop down to 100g or less per day and see if it breaks my plateau because lately, I feel so hungry that I'm afraid I'll go on a binge.
Thanks for the news about hulu. I love Gary Taube and Good Calories Bad Calories. I'm all for low carbing as it has helped me gain control of my binge eating. That said I fell off the wagon this past weekend visiting family and I have a whole new definition of binge. I ate a lot of stuff that I knew was unhealthy before but I was never at the point of shoving a whole package of cookies in my mouth or eating chocolate covered peanuts by the handful until the bowl was empty. I can see that deprivation does hone the edge of that hunger to make it a true binge. I am trying to get back to low carb by having a clean day then putting one foot in front of the other until I can string together enough to be thoroughly back on plan

I really enjoyed it. I'm a South Beacher and I also like Gary Taubes and the Drs Eades books. I really like how the doctors explained the relationship between insulin and obesity. I also ESPECIALLY like how he ripped on the BMI measurement for obesity and overweight. It is simply a grid where your height and weight make a value. It says NOTHING about how much fat and muscle you have! Pure BS (or balogna as Mr. Naughton would say)
I also enjoyed SuperSize Me. It was funny and right on about so many things.
Both movies had good points to make. Both movies had parts where I threw up my hands and said "you have to be KIDDING me."
Good things about FatHead:
No, fast food places don't FORCE you to eat there.
Lawyers don't help the situation.
Our Government should shut the flock up about what we should eat.
Money runs everythings.
Diet high in carbs does make some people obese - insulin resistance/syndrome X, etc.
Good things from Super Size Me
Made me really think about how much advertising we let our kids get exposed to and how it influences their desires.
The food "industry" is uber-powerful - but not because they have the food (or family farms would be full of rich people)
You can't rely on the food industry to sell you healthy food - it is your responsbility.
Plus, I kinda think Morgan Spurlock is handsome . . . can't say that for Naughton.

I finally got around to watching it this morning and I liked these things as well. I calorie count but I also keep an eye on my carb intake (I usually net around 85g per day) and the documentary really re-enforced to me that I'm on the right track.
I'm going to watch it again with my husband, I think he'll get a lot out of it as well.

this only caught my interest because i call my kitty "fathead" because she eats all of her sister's food.
but i wanted to say this CAN be true if you have an underlying condition. There are non-diabetics out there that are considered pre-diabetic. These people really can't handle carbs. The reason being they have already built up some insulin resistance, and when that occurs The body can't send the glucose into the cell for the person to use for energy....some goes in but some stays out. The glucose not burned is turned into fat and stored. They also have to put out MORE insulin than the average person to get the body to take the glucose into the cells, which results in insulin spikes and blood sugar crashes and STRONG hunger.
This all boils down to what works for you. If you are sensitive to carbs and have insulin spikes--cutting down on your carbs, but NOT eliminating them is a good choice. If you don't have a problem, simple calorie cutting should work for you.
How do you know? It is likely if after a very sugary meal, you feel very lethargic and not energized...you might have this problem. Or if you have a glucose meter. If you wake up in the morning and your blood sugar is over 100after 8 hrs of not eating--you likely have this problem.
I watched the documentary "Fathead" the other night. My mom recommended the movie to me because she is also living a low-carb lifestyle. It's sort of a response to "Supersize Me." In this one though, the subject loses weight eating fast-food because he limited his carbs. There is also some information about how high fat diets got a bad reputation. I found it to be both entertaining and informative. I watched it on Netflix through my Xbox, and I think it's a good documentary for people on low-carb diets, or anyone.
