I've heard people say this before-- weight loss makes them cold all the time. Well, I'm freezing all the time. I'm sitting in my house wearing fleece pajamas and fleece slippers with my space heater blasting-- did I mention it's a sunny day here? At work, I have to wear layers all the time. I wear a sweater or jacket all the time now. I feel like I still have plenty of "insulation...."
What ever happened to peri-menopause? Believe me. A hot flash would be welcome!
LOL @ a hot flash would be welcomed. I feel your freezing pain, I seem alot more inclined to be cold than I use to be. Unlike our always thing counterparts who have had a lifetime to adjust to them being colder, we hit it late and now get to make up for it.
Yep, I'm always cold too unless I'm working hard, (like mowing or tilling the garden etc). I take a lot of hot baths and have been known to drive around in my car with the seat warmers on and thermostat set at 90, (on a 75 degree day!) I search for summer shirts with 3/4 length sleeves because my upper body seems to be the coldest.
I also noticed that since losing weight my resting heart rate is MUCH slower. It used to average around 80-90 bpm just watching TV. Now it's around 60. It scared the heck out of me at first until the Doc said it was normal for a woman of my age and weight.
Burrr. I'm looking forward to a nice 95 degree F summer day!

Oh my gosh Lori-- that's me too! I blast my car heater at 90 and my kids start to cry that they're suffocating...
My resting heart rate is way lower too! It used to be 80-90 and now it's usually in the fifties....
Thing is-- I'm still 210 lbs.... Imagine when and if I ever get down where you are.... I'll have to wear a fur coat all the time.
Frankly, I'm liking the change! I hated that I was hot even in winter and that I didn't even need a coat. I hated that I hated Summer. 60's used to be my comfort zone, and 70 was pushing it. We hit 85 last week and I soaked it all in, basking in the sun, not needing the shade! Sweet bliss.
Yep, my heat bill went up this winter BUT I haven't even turned on the AC here yet and we already had one week in the 90's. But as long as the nights cooled off, the low 90's for once felt nice to me instead of insufferable!
I'm the same! The more weight I've lost the colder I've felt.
I sit with long sleeves and a cardigan on a night to watch tv, plus have a blanket over my legs.
When it's really warm here now I must say I love it, but as soon as the temp drops again I'm back to shivering.
But I still wouldn't go back...
I had this problem too. A friend suggested ginger tea, and it helped me a lot with cold hands/feet/boosting circulation. I use fresh ginger root, roughly half an inch/thumb width, scrape off the brown skin then cut in to small chunks. Winter time I brew it about 10 minutes in hot water then drink, leaving in the pieces in for subsequent cups. Warm weather I double the amount of ginger and add cold water, refilling as needed. Tastes great with lemon added in there too. Googling for sites about the benefits is helpful (I know it isn't recommended for all) and Hurray for losing so much that it is even an issue!
Earlier this winter, I had to go out and buy a bulkier winter coat because the thinner cloth coat was not only too big but not nearly warm enough. I have a whole new appreciation for the seat warmers in my car--love them and use them all the time! As it gets warmer, layers are my friend. I now own more jackets and sweaters (thank you Goodwill) than I ever thought I'd use. Yes, I use them all the time! Should I have a hot flash then I can peel off a layer but it isn't long before it goes right back on again!
I have never liked summer--I'm fair and burn easily, not too mention with all the 'extra insulation' I was always hot. But now, I'm actually looking forward to the warm weather. We will be traveling to the midwest soon and the humidity is always something I dreaded but now I'm sooooooo looking forward to it!
The best part of all---my poor skinny husband finally has a wife who isn't freezing him out. We have had the heat ON this winter and it has been fabulous for both of us!!! No more arguing in the car over the heat.
I've always been cold, my entire life. I can remember crying as a kid when my mom would ask me to grab something from the frozen food aisle at the grocery store! I'd never warm up. Even now I'm like Lori Bell, heater cranked in the car and seat warmers on full. It's my feet that are always cold. I've woken my bf from a dead slumber when one of frozen tootsies has touched his leg in the night. For Xmas he bought me these booties that go in the microwave and get warm (they're filled with beans kinda like those neck wraps but for feet!). He insists I wear them before bed. I'm just naturally cold, I guess!
I get cold more easily now too, but my biggest problem is once I am cold I have a terrible time getting warm again. My husband bought me an electric throw so I wouldn't crank the heat up when I get cold. I do like that I don't feel like I am going to die from the heat when the weather gets warm.
It's not a bad idea to mention this new "symtom" to your dr. As JustBecky mentioned it could indicate other issues, I believe she mentioned thyroid. I have had this problem before and it was related to low iron. So not a bad idea to run it past the dr. the next time you are there.
What really helps me with the coldness is to work out (HARD) first thing in the morning. This generally gets my body pumped up enough that I am cranking out the heat for at least half the day. This morning I did 45 minutes of strength training and I feel toasty warm now. Mornings when I bike to work I feel the same. The feeling of warmth does wear off after 3 to 4 hours, but at least for that period of time I don't feel the cold, so it's a relief.
But other than that, my electric blanket is my savior. I absolutely look forward to getting in bed under that cozy warm blanket every night. My husband and I are talking about getting an electric throw for the couch, too--after losing a similar amount of weight as me, he is also cold all the time.
