The 16-mile-long island can only be reached by boat, private plane or ferry, and perhaps it is the slight difficulty in arriving that has kept away the throngs of tourists that so blithely infiltrate other Outer Banks towns. Ocracoke is thankfully left as a slow-paced fishing village, with some 800 residents. Ocracoke, NC
It's 268 miles from Washington, D.C. to Ocracoke, NC.
ETA: Since there's only 4 days this week to exercise, you have the option to exercise either to NC or you can exercise to Ocean City, NJ.

Ocean City was founded as a beach resort in 1879 and quickly earned the nickname of "America's Greatest Family Resort." Since then, many things have changed down the shore, but Ocean City still lives up to its nickname. The town is still "dry," meaning there is no alcohol served or sold in town. The beach is still packed during the day, and the boardwalk is still the place to be at night. This could explain why thousands of families visit each summer, many returning to the same place they have stayed for many years.
The beach stretches for a sandy eight miles. Visitors must pay for beach access and keep their beach badge on hand to show the patrolling beach-badge guards. The price is reasonable at $4 for a daily pass, $8 for a weekly pass and $15 for the season. This includes access to the guarded beaches and use of the public restrooms and changing rooms. Serious beachgoers arrive early to claim a spot and lay out their mini-village of beach blankets, beach chairs and tents. Parents read magazines and stroll on the beach while the kids dart in and out of the water on boogie boards. Surfers convene between First and Third avenues to catch some waves. Not beach crazy? There are lots of shops in town peddling souvenirs, books and snacks and plenty of places to rent bikes. The whole family can pile into a surrey and cruise around the quiet streets. Just a short drive away are Atlantic City and Cape May, for a day trip with a big change of scenery.
When the sun goes down and the lifeguards pack up and leave, the beach gets quiet but the town is just picking up with family fun. With strict liquor laws (meaning, there is none in town), the nightlife here revolves around strolls on the boardwalk. Ocean City, NJ
It's 132 miles from Washington, D.C. to Ocean City, NJ.
