Newbie to group and questions about Sugar Busters

  • Good morning everyone!
I just joined the group yesterday. I am a 35 married woman that just found out that she has type 2 dibites(sp). I have been overweight for all my life. I weigh right around 200 lbs now. I have been doing the Atkins diet and lost 8 lbs with it but the detox is making me so sick. I am very serious about switching over to sugarbusters. Can you all please tell me which diet is better? I am looking for some buddies to talk with about dieting. I have been a yo-yo dieter all my life. I would love some helpful hints and advice please.
    TY

  • Hi Christina, I've just made the switch from Atkins to SB. I was really scared that I would gain in the process but so far so good. I think it's a wise choice to switch with diabetes, but that's a decision you will have to make. Here are a couple of sites that are very informative, do some research and then make that commitiment to whatever plan that you choose.

  • Sugarbusters is definitely easier to "live" on than Atkins. Most of the people I know that did Atkins put their weight back on due to boredom with the plan. I have been on SB for over two years now and really see it as a lifestyle change. It is much more doable for me than Atkins because of the whole grain carbohydrates. I did decide to do South Beach for two weeks and then go back to SB. It is really very similar and kind of a combination Atkins and SugarBusters. You start with a two week induction phase in which you don't eat any carbs, and then gradually add back in whole grain carbs (Sugarbusters principles). I will be back full fledge Sugarbusters after two weeks though...I am hopelessly devoted to it, I just wanted something to nudge me off my plateau. Good luck-Ash
  • Hello Everyone!
My name is Gina and I am new to SB. I started on Sunday and have lost 2 lbs. already! YAY! I too am a diabetic and started SB on the advice from a friend at work. My sugars are a little better, but I am so Happy that I am really not craving junk and that I don't get hungry quite as often as I did.

I am finally in the right state of mind that this is not a diet, but that this is the way I should be eating. That helps me A LOT! My husband is so supportive and helps me whenever I need it.

I too was on Atkins and after I finally got over the horrible feeling of feeling sick, I lost 5 lbs, but gained it right back (after my neice's communion party) lost it again and gained it back. SB is DEFINATELY the better way of eating. You are cutting out what you don't need-SUGAR! Now I can see where my spikes were coming from.

So good health to everyone and I look forward to hearing from you!!!!!!!!!!

    Hope this helped ya!
  • Hello all... new to sugarbusters myself... Hope you guys don't mind if I join in this group.... I'm looking for some support along the way and would be happy to provide any information I know...

Mac I switched over from Atkins and do feel that it is easier because of the grains and fruits... I also agree with Jackie that every once and a while you have to shake things up so that your metabolism doesn't get accustomed to what your doing.... A friend of mine does a short 2 week diet and then a month of her regular plan...then another 2 week diet...etc... She's lost about 40 pounds in 4 months... She says it keeps her from getting bored...lol

I'm trying but keep stalling and getting frustrated so think I will too will try a 2 week South Beach Phase 1...then go back to sugar busters...

Well let's get moving all...we can do this (as she sighs)!!!
  • Hi Christina,

I just recently made the switch from Atkins to SB also. I would like to encourage you. My husband is a Type II Diabetic also and while we were on Atkins his blood sugar dropped to normal within one week and after a month his doctor took him off the Glucophage. We switched over about a week ago and so far he is still holding it down.

I think that either plan is good for blood sugar. From my limited knowledge, what seems apparent to me is that in both plans you are cutting out the sugar which is 100% carbohydrate. So, in Atkins because it's low carb you are cutting out those sugars and in SB you're also cutting out the sugars . I am finding I am having more enjoyment from SB just by being able to eat the grain products and fruit. I've alway liked whole grain breads and cereals so this is easy for me. SB just seems more balanced to me and therefore healthier.

Good luck and I will be happy to help you if I can. We can learn together!
