OMG..Sugar rush!

  • I was in a bad way yesterday. There are a few items I simply cannot keep at the house, because I have no self control on them. I can have chocolate, ice cream, and general snacks around for the kids, and totally avoid them, but I have not purchased any kind of nut product in well over 8 months. I cannot resist nuts. Peanuts, pecans, almonds, pistachios..all of these things are like crunchy crack to me. I'm in the kitchen every 20 minutes grabbing another handful. So..they have not existed for me for the last half year +. I decided to make a batch of my famous homemade cracker jacks for a Christmas package for some friends, so I purchased a can of peanuts. I found myself doing it yesterday..in and out of the kitchen. Just another few.. Finally after I had downed at least 2.5 oz, I decided that I needed to do something. I handed my son a 5 dollar bill and said "go to the store and get me a Real Dr. Pepper, and a single reeses peanut butter cup. Yes..it is too much, but It was something I could accurately count, and I knew it would take off the edge and allow me to ignore the nuts. Now, I have not had a real soda, nor a candy bar of any kind in over 9 months. I have heard of the term sugar rush, or course. But since for most of my life I have always had sugar going through my system, I have never really noticed the effects before. But introducing a sugar laden drink, and a sugar laden candy bar into a body that has had nothing even remotely like that for such a long time was something else. 5 minutes after this "treat" I felt my pulse increase, and was on my feet, practically bouncing around. An hour later I crashed, and went straight to bed. LOL It was quite the sensation. It did keep me away from the peanuts, and while it is probably not the recommended way of dealing with a bad habit, it did what I wanted it to do. I simply did not expect that intense sugar rush. Have any of you ever substituted something bad to avoid something much worse?
  • Well sometimes I replace good food, and a large amount of it, for the the bad food. This sort of makes me full, so I can say no to the bad food. It also keeps me satiated longer than the bad food would and has more fiber.

I think it is interesting how bodies detox from certain foods and then can't handle them later. I feel the same way about meat - it could be somewhat psychological - but I literally feel heavier and sort of constipated when I eat meat.
