  • I think there was a thread kind of like this a while back, but it is always interesting to hear... what are the wackiest dieting "tips" you've ever heard?
  • "Don't eat breakfast because it will only make you hungry for the rest of the day"

    Yeah, ok.
  • june- Eating breakfast does make me hungrier but I realize not how important it is!

Er, maybe not hungrier. Maybe just hungry? I never ate breakfast before and I wouldn't eat until noon or later and I wouldn't be hungry when I ate. Now that I eat breakfast, I am hungry by 11:30 and ready for dinner by 4:30.
  • Eating breakfast gets your metabolism working, so in a way it does induce hunger, but that's a not a reason to avoid it I just thought her whole reasoning was ridiculous.
  • "Drink ice cold water. Your body will burn calories just getting the water to a normal temperature to digest."

Sure, that MIGHT be true, but if you're looking to go that route, why not just eat ice? Maybe it does burn a few extra calories... but not nearly enough to matter! If you're too focused on these little 'tricks,' you end up missing the point.
  • Vegetables and fruits are negative calorie foods. It takes more calories to digest them than they cost you.

Not true! I can't eat 20 pounds of apples on top of a 1400 calorie diet and expect to lose easily.
  • Quote: Vegetables and fruits are negative calorie foods. It takes more calories to digest them than they cost you.
Oh I remember this one! Someone once told me that an orange was -60 calories because it was so acidic.

My contribution - bread makes you gain weight.

No, calories make you gain weight
  • Mine is: laxatives will make you lose weight. no, kidding. They will also dehydrate you but you won't lose fat. Also, I hear "don't lift weights, you'll gain 30 lbs of muscle weight!" Newsflash, it takes almost a year for a woman to put on 5 lbs of muscle and that's only if you absolutely bust it and are super clean with your diet.
  • here is one:

    don't eat after 7 pm.
  • Chewing on ice is a great way to burn calories.

    As opposed to..exercising? LOL
  • "Exercise will make you gain weight." Um, no. Maybe for a week, if you're retaining water. But I used to use that as an excuse not to work out, haha.
  • "Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat, it just takes up less room."

Ummmm, for the second part of this to be true, then muscle must be more dense than fat.

    Density = Mass/Volume

If we have an equal amount of volume then...

    D(muscle) = M(muscle)/V
    D(fat) = M(fat)/V

    If D(muscle) > D(fat) then
    M(muscle)/V > M(fat)/V
    which reduces to
    M(muscle) > M(fat)

SO YES. A given volume of muscle DOES weigh more than an equal volume of fat!
  • It takes a YEAR for women to put on 5 pounds of muscle? FML. What does a girl gotta do to do a pull-up? Will look into that later.

But yeah, I've heard the "don't lift weights, you'll gain!" thing and the "carbs are BAD, they make you fat." I hate that one.
  • Drink ice cold water. Your body will burn calories just getting the water to a normal temperature to digest."

haha did you hear this on an ana website? (i used to do that)

i've heard this.. i guess with celery and cucumber it is true, because it's like, 5 calories for like, a cup of either of those two.. give or take a few extra cals
