Default Just Diagnosed Today PCOS/IR

Hello Ladies,

I was just diagnosed with PCOS/IR today. My doctor prescribed metiform, aldactone, and ortho tri cyclin lo.

Any one have the same diagnosis or meds. . .how has it worked for you.

I have an endocrine disorder that resembles PCOS. I have elevated testosterone, elevated cortisol, high normal insulin, and digestive hormones that don't work. I was put on metaformin but it made me very sick. I'm also on Alesse, which is very similar to ortho tricyclin lo... it is a low dose estrogen pill. And, I take aldactone, which is also called spironolactone.
All of the medications can make you nauseated; especially the metaformin. Some of the birth control pills can cause gall bladder issues. Spironolactone can make you dizzy. I take all of my meds at night because that is easier for me to remember to take them with dinner, and because the spironolactone makes me dizzy.
I'm apparently very sensitive to most medications: if there is a side-effect listed, I'm probably going to have at least one.

Hi Virginia, I was prescribed Met and it made me sick. The Glucophage XR was much better, but I was still sick with it as well. I finally quit taking it when my IR got under control. Did an endo prescribe your bc pills? Last I heard tri-phasal pills were bad news for PCOS patients. They might have changed their minds since I last read about it, though.

Why are they bad news, Jennifer? I've been on the low-dose estrogen since I was diagnosed, and that is the one medication that hasn't caused me any problems!

I'm not completely sure of it, but from what I know/remember, triphasal was bad for pcos because of the different (three) levels of hormones. Monophasal was better at least as far as cysts are concerned. Mouse, you don't have cysts, do you?

I think it may have been concerned with symptoms also, but I do remember it being a concern with cysts.I'll look it up, (I think it is in PCOS: The Hidden Epidemic) and I'll be back.

Yea, no cysts. And as I've said, even when I was thinner... before this started, I was probably only 40 pounds overweight... I still didn't have a cycle. I think it is that, and the fact that even with spironolactone and everything they can't get the testosterone in a normal range. Along with all of the other whacko hormone levels.
