Default slow Metabolism

Hi all...

I have stopped writing for a few weeks, because I was depressed, I went for my weigh in on 24 April... for a period of 4weeks I lost 7lbs, ok not bad, at least i'm moving down... but it was when the doc. checked my Metobalism that she said it was so slow by nature, that it is very hard for me to loose and maintain my weight if i don't do excercise regularly.... ok most will say so... ?
no the thing is she was expecting more than 7lbs, as I take special med. for my metabolism to increase so burning would be high...
Another thing was Im almost dehydrated... 27% of water only, which should be at least 50%
My body fat was something of 64% and muscle was only 12%... so what should I do...
According to my doc. I just have to continue as my weight is too high that I might risk injuries if I choose something other than walking...

Can anyone tell me what can help?

How did your doctor measure your metabolism and what medicine are you on to make it run higher? And what did she suggest for you to do to address your dehydration?

Yeah, I think we need a bit more info in order to help you.

My metabolisim was tested waay back at the near beginning of my journey. With some breath thing, if I recall and it was found to be slow. But that does not mean one can't lose weight.

Exercise is without doubt the best bet at pumping up our metabolisim. Also eating small amounts, frequently through out the day.

Anyway, let us know what your current day looks like - food & exercise wise and we'll try and help you tweak it. Though of course we are not doctors or professionals of any kind.

Agreed. I was found to have a low metabolism until I started walking, doing strength training, and eating at least 4-5 small meals per day. And I can't speak enough about how much eating a good breakfast every morning has changed things. Right now the weight seems like it's flying off.

Is this a general physician...or a doctor that specializes in nutrition/diet or thyroid?

The reason that I am asking, is because 7 pounds in 4 weeks is right in the range of healthy weight loss: 1-2 pounds per week.

Your thyroid may very well be low, but you were actually losing weight at a very good pace.

I guess I don't understand why the doctor wanted more...

Hi Sharry! 7 pounds in 4 weeks is fantastic!

Is this the same doctor who recommended the lipo treatments and starvac you ask about in the Does it Work thread?

Does your doctor get money if you do those treatments? What is this special med you are on to increase your metabolism?

How did she measure your metabolism, body fat and water percentages?

I would encourage you to check out the 100 lb club and see what those ladies are doing for food and movement. You already have all the tools you need to suceed at weight loss. Congrats on your 7 lbs so far!

I only lose 4-5 pounds in four weeks, and that's if I'm having a great month. So 7 pounds sounds pretty awesome to me! Maybe you need a second opinion. Did your current doctor tell you not to do any strength training? Because that would help speed up your metabolism as well.

I definitely would consult another doctor. Something sounds off about this one.

I'm no doctor, but I have never heard of a medication to increase metabolism.

Also, 7 lbs. in 4 weeks is healthy. What does the doctor expect you to lose?

Your doc said, you can only walk at your weight or risk injury?!?!?!?! WHAT?

I weigh more than you and i do WAY more than walk. What does your weight have to do with saftey in weight training? I do pilates, weight training, walking, swimming, elliptical. I really cant see a real doctor saying "only walking is safe for your weight"...i see 300 pound 70 year olds in the pool exercising at the YMCA.

And like everyone else has said, 7 pounds in 4 works aint shabby.

Maybe i am missing something but a lot of the things you said dont sound right.

I just reread your post, and I have to echo what everyone else has said --7 pounds in a month is fantastic! I'm not a physician, but I'd say you're right on target. That's a good, healthy amount to lose.

I have no place judging your doctor, but it might be in your best interest to get a second opinion. It sounds like you're doing everything right... exercising, watching your diet (though if you're dehydrated --drink!), so your doctor's advice is a little surprising.

Don't get discouraged with your progress. It's actually very good by any definition.

Your doctor's expectations seem to be quite unreasonable, especially if you have thyroid issues or are diabetic or insulin resistance (sometimes called prediabetes, metabolic syndrome or syndrome x).

I would also suggest a second opinion.

Also, as for exercise, there's no reason to limit yourself to walking, you just have to pay close attention to your body's pain signals and use common sense. Even at my size, with arthritis and fibromyalgia, I bicycle, swim, use handweights and weight resistance bands. I also bought tai chi and yoga videos and I check out other exercise videos from the library (my next library video is a bellydancing video).

My doctor told me that I can do anything that isn't painful. That makes sense to me.
