Yesterday, I lifted the maximum possible weight on the glute machine! 210 lbs per leg! Go me!
Of course, I realize that this means now I really need to venture into the OTHER weight room. . .the one where the scary powerlifters go. . .and learn to use one of those Smith machine gizmos that has me so afraid of looking stupid. . .
The other weight room isn't as scary as it looks I say just go there and do it. You can also do lunges and squats with weights.
I've only topped out a machine once and it was a sitting leg press at 310 lbs but that was really using 2 legs at once so I just switched to using 1 leg at a time.
Yeah, to do lunges & squats with weights still requires me going into the other room & learning to use the Smith machine. I've been doing presses & such b/c I am WAY beyond being able to lift the weight I can squat/lunge to put it on my shoulders!
Do I just walk up to one of the big scary power guys and say, "Excuse me, but can you help me?" Those guys always seem so into their own workouts that I am terrified of interrupting! (I work out at the Y, so they don't have a ton of weight room staff or trainers wandering around to ask.)
The sitting leg press machine we have tops out at 400. . .but that is for sure a "someday" goal!
Don't be intimidated in going in the other room, once you're there, those big guys are just teddy bears and will be more than willing to help you out... OR hire a personal traininer for a couple of sessions and they will show you the ropes...
Like Ilene said, I am sure someone will be willing to help you. Most lifters enjoy talking about training and teaching people. Don't be shy about asking to work in.
