I'm still reading "Library: An Unquiet History," which I'm finding to be a bit drier than I expected. I finished "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime" and "The Wooden Sea." I recommend both. I have "The Amateur Marriage" on reserve at the library, but I have to finish this "Library" book since someone else has it on hold.

I'm getting fatter. Blah. I hate this. I have to diet. Oh, well, I have until next Tuesday.

I'm reading The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett. Isn't the Gardens of Kyoto by the same author who wrote Remains of the Day? That's one of my all time favorite books. How did you find a book club Bagzie? I want to join one, but I'm not real sure about organizing one. They have a couple at the library, but I want one where food and drink is involved in the meetings. My friend suggested we start a club by first reading Under the Tuscan Sky or is it Sun? and having italian food w/ lots of vino. So far it's only the 2 of us that we can get interested. Cherry, I'm putting your book titles on my list of future reads. Poor Lush. I'm in a slump too. Join the club. DH just got blood work back at his docs and it looks like he might be type 2 diabetic. He inherited all the ills from his Mother's side of the family and only his dark, handsome italian looks from his Dad's side. As we all know, Grandpa Jim is still humming along at 91. He's so thrilled because our new satelite dish tv has cinemax, which has lots of R+ rated movies. Naughty old geezer. Hang in there, Kiwi...menopause is just around the corner. Do you realize that we're the first generation...at least I am...who spent our teens and twenties on the pill???? You don't think that my post menopausal zest will be postponed due to the foolish wish not to have children while I was young and cute?????? I don't think I deserve that. I keep thinking my time has come, but no. I remain youthful and vibrant.

Kiwi, they have drivers ed in the schools. DS took it in the summer. I think it involves 4 hours of driving but he went to see his dad or something and I don't think he drove much. There are no businesses here that teach driving other than in a classroom. I want someone to get in the car with him.

He's been working on a merit badge (computers) for scouts and that involves going to someone's house. He knows all the stuff for the badge already and complains that he has other things to do than go to this house. I love going tothis house where there are adults and social stuff. I try to tell him that it should be fun but he prefers to act like a teenager

Someone who is starting another online magazine read a story I'm workshopping and asked me to submit it. This is nice. I like the story myself.

My dd had to have 6 hrs of driver ed in the car.

We had to PAY and take kids to private commercial driver's ed program... then they got school credit and an automatic pass on the in-car part of the DPS driver's test. I took both kids to the vacated mall parking lot for them to drive first. Once they could start, stop and steer, I drove them to a little used road and they practiced. It took DD 2 years to get the courage to drive on the highway! And DS's step brother kept running into things with the parents' car, so DS was appropriately cautious.

I'd like to have a book club CHAT once in a while... (Agree with others that mailing books/chain letters isn't my thing.) I've already mentioned Angry Housewives eating bon bons (Lorna Landvik)-- the story of about 5 women in a MN neighborhood who start a bookclub... Is there already a book club thread here at 3fc... or is it only diet/recipe books? Hmm... guess I COULD go check it out.

Baggz... hold out for food at the book club....! I agree that book-related food is the most fun... and decorations... Sure it's extra work, but it contributes to the irreverence and joie de vivre of the members. I wouldn't mind being "used" if it was to bring eyebrow lifts to the public. I DON"T want to be tapped for teaching leg lifts, though.

HRT is much better than PMS... The sudden hysterectomy a few years back was sort of a shock... but it DID make life easier.

I'm missing my kids this morning. they are annoyingly silent (but probably happy, because I haven't had any whiney e-mails or calls). Hope those of you whose kids are still home can find something to enjoy about 'em!

LoLo... go smash something that makes a bunch of noise.... Old jelly jars? with a hammer? Or throwing 'em against a wall? I think a good Kali/Shiva imitation is cathartic.
