  • Hi all. Well I'm working overtime today. Our refuel outage is getting very close and the work load is growing.
Yes Pat I have 2 grown cats, Tom & Baby. And Baby had a litter about 8 weeks ago and I still have 3 kittens from that. And DH & I do a fine job of spoiling them all rotten.
And 3 pounds I hope I can make the scale move this week.
Can't stay long this morning really busy. But I'll post over the weekend.
    Have a great day!

  • Hi everybody. Meadowlark- I found out I had diabetes 2 and was very upset about it. I also am trying to control it without drugs. I am watching what I eat and doing exercises. I also am in my 60's live alone and not exactly a slave to my stove. I was diagnosed with polycythemia(my body makes too much blood cells) This was very scary and upsetting to me, as I kept active, exercised and ate fairly well. That was in March, so in June, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, I like to hit the roof. So I had a lot of pitty parties and the why me, but then I thought just deal with it, but I have to admit, I get down some times. The polycythemia gets me fatigued alot, so I have to rest, I am used to going full steam. But diabetes and poly is treatable, so we might as well deal with it. Have a good day, and let us hope we can do this diabetes thing without drugs'. Hope to talk to everybody again. Have a great weekend!
  • Hi, all. I started out the day with a cold shower because the boiler was down in my apt. building. then I got to work and had to re-do a project done by someone who is off today. Grrr. 2round - I'm glad you're safe but I'm sorry Ivan has given you a lot of extra work. You're so lucky to have cats and kittens. It's been a long time since I've had any pets because my apt. is way to small. sigh. Hope you all have a good weekend. I'll check in next week.

  • Akrosey, I think you are very talented, and you are helping your diabetes, because I think with all your creative talents, you relieve a lot of stress, which is good for us. Try to keep positive with your curves. The more you do, the more it will be easier for you. Keep saying, it is only 30 minutes of my time, but it is doing me a world of good. Have a great weekend and happy crafting.(I hear they are looking for a new Martha Stewart-(Little humor) Hi everybody anybody have other activities they do?
  • Well today I treated myself to staying in bed late. Something I very rarely do. But it was nice since I've been working so hard lately.
Stepped on the scale yesterday, something I normally only do once a week. And I was down 2 pounds. Man was I glad to see that scale move in the right direction for a change. So I'm going to be extra good this weekend and watch those carbs.

Rosey you are a real inspiration. You've got me thinking about checking out curves. They just opened one in my area. And it's right on my way home from work. Is it very expensive?

Took a chicken out for dinner going to do the rotiserie thing. With a salad and nice veggie. And then I think I make a nice chicken salad with the left overs. Does anybody have any good meal ideas that are low carb that also appeal to the DH. I really need those ideas.

  • I know I shouldn't be posting today.
Hi, I'm Donna and I've been visiting 3fc since jan this yr. I am in a really down mood as far as this disease goes. That's why I shouldn't be posting. I'm am really sick of the disease and sick of trying. I was diagnosed about 8 or 9 yrs ago, but the last 4 yrs have been horrible. Lots of meds and no control. Last yr I followed sugar busters(SB) and my #'s came down. (I have a tendancy to have very high morning blood sugars that come down during the day 150 was the average low when I was doing well) I lost 30 doing SB and my morning #'s were about 140. Then I switched to a new doctor because my old doc seemed to be listening with a deaf ear. He felt I'd never lose(probably because he's been after me for yrs and I've only yo-yo'd) and he kept suggesting gastric bypass surgery (not for me) So the new doctor ( a woman this time) who works in a big practice discovers I'm very anemic(I was always anemic, but this was pretty bad according to her) So the tests began. Different docs, lots of tests, lots of stress(even bone marrow test which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy) Well the 30lbs I lost found their way back and right back to old habits. Well, my morning sugars as of last month were in the 250 range So I decided to cut the carbs once and for all and start Atkins. Well, I started by peaking with a 271 reading on tuesday and today down to 225(taking 1000 glucophage at nite, supposed to take 2500 total, but then I don't lose at all) Then I read a post about Atkins being dangerous for diabetics after first reading it's the best diet for diabetics. I have taken in so much information about diabeties treatment, diets etc...
So much conflicting info. Some say coffee is good, brings #'s down. Others say coffee is bad, causes spikes. Low carb, high protein, low protein, high fat, who knows what to do anymore. And there isn't a decent doctor to be found. All wrapped up in insurance and liabilities. I just am exhausted from trying and by my numbers, I'm killing myself trying.

Sorry to be such a downer, but I just don't know what to do anymore.
  • hi
donna have to jump in here. i know just what you are talking about. i had my numbers up in the 300s then i would get scared call the dr. and he would give me more meds. which in turn made me gain weight. i was mad at the dr. mad at myself. finaqlly i decided to try atkins. my numbers came down really fast and i lost 40 lbs. i now take metform 500 only when i need it. dr, is finally happy too.
yor glucopagh should not make you gain weight, keep trying it will work. good luck. you can do it
hi to everyone else. congrats on the 2 lbs. deb!!
    pat
  • Your post put me to tears
    Hi Pat,

You don't know how I needed to hear something positive from someone who knows what I'm talking about. How fast did they come down? What do you consider a drop. 271 to 225 in 5 days didn't seem significant to me but maybe it is. How long have you been doing Atkins? 40lbs! Congrats!
That's fantastic and also great news that you have the metformin down to almost non existant. You must be so proud of yourself.

Thank you so much for giving me some hope when I was feeling so hopeless.

And to Pat and everyone else here, I'm sorry for being so negative. It's been a really long haul. I'm usually much more supportive and upbeat, but today I was feeling really defeated.

So if you all don't mind, and I promise to be more optamistic, I'd like to stick around this thread.

I'm 44, married 27 yrs to my best friend. We have 3 sons, 26,22 & 21. (all still home and unmarried) I work in mortgage banking. Hobbies include movies, motorcycles( I rode my own until an accident, now just a happy passenger)
love to go for walks. Lately, not much else. Spend a lot of time trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong
We live just about 30 minutes or so outside New York City (NYC).
My goal is to get a hold of my health and turn it around as I lost my mom at the young age of 49. She died from a blod clot to the heart but all stemming from complications of out of control diabetes. You'd think that would have been a lesson to me. But for years I felt that was my fate and nothing would change it. But I'm here to change.
  • donna as to your questions. i have been doing atkins since last week of oct,[butnot very well this summer] my bs dropped down in about a month. they run in the 120s mostly now. hopefully they will go down if i can loose more.
lets all of us stick together in this fight.we can do it.
rosey i live in west central mn. battle lake. i have a question for you? have you ever done the writing for your cards on the computer? i have really bad handwriting.
it was hot here today. yuk!! pat
  • Hi everyone man I'm back to the 4am wake up call Boy could use another sleep in.

Donna I'm so glad you found us. And don't feel bad about be depressed, I'm sure we have all been there a couple of thousand times. The most important thing is that you don't just give up. And that's why we are all here, to give eachother the support that only we can understand. So just hang in here with us.

Rosey I can see lots of MOOSE for you guys this winter. And hope you have a great time with the grangkids.

Pat thanks for the great info on the Atkins. I really need to go get a book. Right now I'm just kind of winging it. I'm sure I could do alot better with the book. I really want to get my #'s down lower.

Hope everybody has a skinny week. Check you gals tomorrow!

  • Hi all. 2round - how do you get up at 4 a.m.!! I crawl out of bed just before 8 to get to work at 9 and I'm still dragging. Donna -- If you're depressed about being diabetic and having trouble losing weight, you've found the right place. We're all in the same boat and have bad days and better days. My sugar was high and I had to cut down Glucophage because it wasn't mixing well with the meds I take for gastroparesis. After much resistance on my part, I began taking Actos with Glucotrol. The sugars came down but the weight went up as well as my feet swelled up. I have high morning sugars (this morning it was 180) and the Actos didn't seem to affect that. I'm working with my doctor to find the right combo of drugs. I haven't been eating right, not exercising and am having trouble getting on a program I can stick with. My mother also had Type II diabetes, so I know the consequences. I wouldn't go on Atkins because it calls for too much protein which isn't good for the kidneys and besides, I'd just use it as an excuse to pig out on bacon. ummm. There is, however, a new book out on Atkins and diabetes which you might want to check out. You don't say if you exercise regularly. That should help with the numbers.
Rosey - Paperdoll is right -- just keep going to Curves and eventually it will get easier. Kudos to you for doing something so positive. Just think it only taking a small amount of time from doing what you enjoy. I need to pull myself away from computer games in the evening and start moving.
  • Hi everybody,
Well, I was running late today as I didn't sleep well with the back problem. Went to the chiropractor today and it really helped. I'm hoping I can get some very needed sleep today.

Rosetta, I was on medication for gastroparesis also, Reglin. But after going on line I realized it was something I didn't want to be on long term. So I weaned myself off it. It helped and the problem hasn't come back(knock on wood) I'm doing Atkins, but I am nervous about it. I'm actually been on the low carb friends board and there is much discussion regarding protein and diabetics. It seems research has shown(and Lord knows theres always more research) and also a book by Dr Bernstein, Diabetic Solution, which states fat consumption should be increased and protein decreased. Many diabetics have found significant improvement in their BS's by increasing the fat consumption. But it's such a high amount. Like 70-80% of your diet. I'm am going to buy the book. It's sounds scary and goes against everything we are taught, but then again, so does Atkins. See why I get so confused
I was exercising regularly for most of the summer. Then after vacation it fell off. So hard to make a good habit, so easy to break it. I am planning to get going again. But I'm still in induction and I don't quite know how I feel about exercising yet. Maybe at least start walking again.

Deb, Thanks for the support. This is a tough nut, this diabetes. But I think we can all help each other too. Everyone seems to bring something different.
Maybe together we can find the right formula. Even if the formula is different for each of us.

Hi Pat, Thanks again for getting me out of a rut. I'll try to stay out of it.

Well, I hope everyone has a good day tomorrow. I don't know about all of you, but I am all over these season premiers. Just what I need to be doing, sitting in front of the TV or the PC
