I started smoking when I was active duty in the Airforce, but the minute I found out I was pregnant, I threw them out, and didn't touch them for 4 years. Then, this summer, my husband went TDY (temporary duty assignment), and something major stressful happened, and I started again. I have now been smoking again for 3 months. But last night I had enough, and vowed to quit. Well, it has been 24 hours.... and not one single ciggarrette! This is crucial, since in the last month I have tried to quit a few times, but didn't make it past 12 hours. Now that my lungs feel clearer today, I really don't want to fail at quitting, but I admit the urges are coming on strong, and I am quite crabby today.
Pray for me, please.
Kirei
mum2five: Today is the first day of the rest of YOUR life. Don't beat yourself up so badly...just re-commit yourself to your program (You all will notice that I refuse to say D I E T...it's such a nasty word. This low carb eating is a way of life; therefore, I call it my life changing "program"). You too can do this! You don't have to prove anything to anyone but yourself. You aren't (or shouldn't be) doing this program for anyone but you. YOU are the one who is going to GAIN by LOSING. I'm praying for you!
nasus: Thanks for the warm welcome and the kudos. We all have problems, but we are all also survivors. Hubby's blood pressure and sugar levels are now normal. I'm so proud for him!!! As for him joining this group, he's trigger shy when it comes to the computer, and no, he doesn't look over my shoulder either. He's worried that I'll talk to some weirdo that will seek me out and kill me (or some such nonsense LOL), so I only get online when he isn't around.
25 (Surely you must have a name...or have I missed it???): I almost all my carbs from veggies too. I do (for the moment) have heavy cream in my one cup of coffee, but I am considering eliminating coffee from my program as well. Only recently, I have completely quit drinking diet soda, and find that I don't really miss it. Congratulations on your 26 # loss. Stay on program, and you too will find yourself under 200 #'s before you know it!!!
Kirei: Since being on this program, I have found that I am allergic to mushrooms and cheese. (We eat dinner out often and) I found that I gained 10 #'s OVERNIGHT after eating mushrooms. I ONLY gained 6 #'s from eating cheese!!! I really would do the induction again to help you get back into ketosis and back on track again.
As for quitting smoking, I will be joining you in the morning with being a QUITTER. I was going to use a patch last night and couldn't find where I put them (I have post traumatic stress disorder, and suffer from some short and long term memory loss). I will make sure that I find the patches today, put one on tonight and be on my way. (By the way, I have been smoking for 39 years...this is quite a big thing for me, but I thought that since I am getting my life on track, my way of eating in line, and losing the weight, what better time to quit smoking. At least I won't have to worry about gaining the weight!!!)
jd: Determination does go a long way. Nice to see you not give up...just get back on program. Today is the first day of the rest of YOUR life, too. Good job getting back on track!!!
Hensa: You too could be allergic to cheese and not know it. I'd leave it alone for a while and see what happens with the weight. Since you are doing the induction, you aren't eating more than 20 carbs a day are you? Have you bought the ketostix to see whether you are in ketosis? Hang in there...the weight will fall off!!!
Pat: I could never do the cereal and/or fruit. Either would trigger me into being more hungry and/or craving more carbs. My sugar levels would rise and crash like crazy. You're lucky that you can tolerate them. I had to let my strawberries go to weed and keep from visiting that side of the house. LOL
I bought and took the chromium just this morning. I also bought potassium for hubby...which he took last night and again this morning. His system responds fast to any medication, so I expect him to tell me that his legs feel better already when he comes home from work.
I had beef and some fried MUSHROOMS in butter on Sunday????? (But it is on the list of food that is allowed for the induction period) Does it mean that if your are allergic to a certain item it will make you pick up weight? I only eat veggies or salad with my main meal for the day (a very small portion)
I can not get hold of ketostix still searching….
Good luck to all you guys who would like to quit smoking I will be thinking of you …..
My husband just now received an invitation from some friends to come over for dinner tonight; it will be the first time that I am not going to be able to prepare the food myself since I started with my “life changing program”. My friend is not very fond of the Atkins diet she believes in WW because she had success with it and she believes it is more balance….
Please think of me ….. Will let you know how it went tomorrow morning.
Pat -- Sounds like you really want to take on a healthier lifestyle. Kudos to you for doing all that research before starting on your journey. Good luck!
Day 2 of my restart. So far, so good. Our new facility does not yet have a cafeteria (being installed in mid-September). So I'm using 13 grams of my daily carbs on 1 pc of wheat toast with 3 slices of American cheese for breakfast. It's quick and filling and the lowest carb item I could find (obviously muffins, donuts, pastries, Pop-Tarts, etc. can not be consumed).
I was rereading Dr. Atkins book this past weekend (sorta gearing up for the restart) when I came across several remarks about how people used to eat like this (his plan) before the introduction of refined sugars and flour and things like that (at least before they became the mass-marketed items that they are today). Anyway, these people had less instances of obesity and lower heart disease, cancer, and diabetes rates. It got me to thinking. I'm a bit of a history buff myself. Specifically, I like to read about how people lived in earlier times. They ate sugar, cookies, cake, bread, rice, pasta, candy, fudge, sugared drinks, etc. The difference between those times and today was the AMOUNT they consumed. Sweets were not a normal everyday item. They were reserved for special occasions (birthdays, holidays, housewarmings, etc.). Even fruit was only consumed during harvest time and then for a short time following from what was canned. Even the term "Fat Cats" used to refer to the well-off financially people was derived from the fact that these people could afford to eat sweets daily and pay for imported fruits year round -- resulting in a wider girth than those who had to be more frugal with their funds. Interesting. While I like Dr. Atkins plan well enough, I can't honestly see myself NEVER eating another cookie or having a glass of fresh-squeezed lemonade. I think the key is to strictly limit the amount of refined sugar to those very special occasions. I'm not talking about having to eat a slice of the store bought cake at your nephew's 5th birthday party. I'm talking about having a very slim slice of your mom's Kringler (Swedish coffee cake) which she only makes at Christmas time. Or maybe a single scoop of home-made ice cream at the annual family BBQ. If you know you can always have it another time, the craving gets less. I tried this philosophy last night. My hubby bought the kids some fudge at the corner store (they were blue because I had to go back to work so he wanted to give them a special treat for dessert). He save me a piece (forgetting, again, my new plan). I was able to say no thank you because I reminded myself that it will always be at the corner store if I absolutely HAVE to have it another time.
Wow! That's a bit long-winded. Sorry. I just get these thoughts in my head and can't seem to stop typing. What do you all think about what I wrote. Criticism accepted with grace.
Gotta go. Want to try to get in a quick walk before lunch time is over.
Ice cream man came and I ate one.
There, got that out...time to move on.
Nasus-You said to stay away from nuts and cheese. Really? While I'm not on Atkins, I thought those were ok. (Except I know for me, I get carried away with the nuts) Whats up with the cheese?
25- I LOVE broccoli salad! I'm making it for one of the parties I'm going to this weekend.
Thanks for the butt duck taping offer, but at this point I think screws will be most effective.
Paula- thanks for the kind words of support.
I have parties and weddings evry weekend for the entire MONTH of Sept. starting this weekend! One party person asked me to make my favorite Potato Casserole! (You know, with cheese, sourcream, hashbrowns...)
This is gonna be SO hard for me. You all sound so strong! I don't know if I can do it. I get this party mentality "It's a special day, I can start tomorrow again, One little peice wont kill me...) AAHH
I've gotta do this...I just feel like I'm depriving myself of something special. Man! It's so sick and twisted!
renee some have problems with the cheese. some do not but if you are having problems with the weight loss try to cut that out for a few weeks then jumb back and try it if you stall again then limit it in very small quanities. it is so easy to over do it. i think that one of the problems with cheese is the very high fat content, but i amy be wrong.
jdoneil1 I do PP but the way of thinking is the same, are you doing atkins LP? I think that that is a bit more liberal. in the maintanance plan when you get to goal or near, you increase your carbs, and fruits are allowed they are now but in smaller portions. and both programs do say that there will be times that you will eat Off plan but when you do just immediatly get back on the longer off plan the harder it is to get back on and the longer you have to do if you are off for any lenght of time to rid your body of the carbs. very interesting piece of info. thankyou. glad to see you back here. your dh sounds like a dream does he have a clone??
Paula and kieri way to go ont he quitting. good luck it is a hard toime to do it but as you are changing your life it should be a total change. let us know how we can help!!
hensa i just finished reading your post. what a wonderful thing to not have to eat as much. i found that protien is the best thing for me to eat and not feel hungry. where do you work?? keep up the exercise. there may be one other reason your scale is not moning. you are gaining muscle. if your clothes are getting looser then you are loosing fat, and that is good. this woe will have you gain lean body mass. that is muscle and that is needed to increase your metabolism which will speed up your fat loss. so if you are gatting thinner but not seeing the scale move do not worry if you take a pund of fat and one of muscle the fat is 5 times bigger than the muscle. so it is good . give it some more time then you will see the scale drop. but please drink more.
Pat sounds like you hanging in there,
25???

HELLO TO ALL THE NEWBIES...
and to everyone else...sorry I cant stay longer,, have to run to get ready for tomorrow but I will try to check in sometime Thurs...
Terri -- that's it let it all out! Then pack a cooler. Just *assume* you'll be out all day, and pack a cooler. Put lot of little low carb meals and snacks in. What's the worst that can happen? You don't use 'em and you unpack 'em when you get home and have a few pre-made snacks. When I'm at my best, I do this every day. My "lunch bag" is actually a small cooler with ice in it so I can eat at my desk -- so what if I look like a pig hauling that thing around? I'm eating healthy. The fact that I hate to wash out all those little plastic containers every night is what keeps me on the wagon. I don't want to have gone through that exercise for nothing!
Renee, if you cut out (or really diminish) sweets and carbs for 2 or 3 days before those parties, you'll find you want them less once you're there. Your cravings won't be as high, and neither will your tolerance for sweets. Set the weekend party as your goal when you choose not to eat high carb goodies -- You can do it! Then when you get to the party, you can eat a few guilt-free treats. I'm guessing you won't want them as much if you've cut way down beforehand. Listen to your body -- try to notice what sets off your cravings. Part of the problem is that we *remember* we love certain treats, but that doesn't mean we really want them every time they're set down in front of us. Hang in there!
I weighed myself last night on my friend electronic scale and I have lost 6.6lbs since the last time I weighed myself on her scale (1½ weeks ago) I started with Atkins last Thursday that means in a weeks time I have lost 6.6lb’s My weight now is 208lbs
I am so excited and motivated to go on. I have set a goal for myself to be 132lb’s next year on my birthday (12 May) do you think it’ possible? That means I must loose 84lbs in total.
My electronic scale is still not showing any lost, so I am going to put it aside and only use my old scale.
Last night was okay. I told her but she is not showing any emotions I think she doesn’t want to encourage met because she does not believe it is a healthy way of eating….
Well, I am going to continue and show them all that I can do it and I am going to do it.
With all the support I am getting on this thread I think the journey is going to be a breeze.
Sue – I am a buyer for a big company in South Africa, some days I enjoy my work and some days I don’t, but I guess that is life. If you say I must drink 5 to 6 litters water a day do you really mean it. Currently I am consuming about 3½ litter’s water a day and I don’t think I can drink any more. I guess I will try…….
Joanne – well done in resisting that fudge that’s the spirit! I agree with everything that you said we are living in a world full of CARBS (easy food – breads, pies, cookies ect.... Our ancestors did live a much healthier life without all the extra stuff… I am going to limit the carbs.. for REALLY special occasions and then have a limited amount.
All of you who are trying to quit smoking I am thinking of you. GOOD LUCK.
