Going along the lines of what Sue said, I guess it really depends on whether you love ice cream of you just eat too much of it. If you can have a single serving of the regular kind, then by all means, go for it! I, however, am quite cimpulsive, and if I know it's there, I will eat the whole half-gallon in 2 days or so. Instead, I eat sugar-free instant pudding made with skim milk with some ff Cool Whip. I also like making smoothies, so I'll but some low-fat or ff ice cream or frozen yogurt that I don't really like to eat plain and use it with frozen strawberries and bananas and skim milk for smoothies (sometimes with less milk so it's really thick, and I can eat it with a spoon).
I found a neat "ice cream" idea on a low carb recipe site I go too for ideas or recipes. It's creamy, tastes like ice cream and good for you.
1 1/2 cups Light Cool Whip (keep frozen) I use regular Cool Whip as it has less carbs than Light
1/2 small banana
2Tbsp chopped pecans or walnuts (both good for you and high in Omega 3)
2 Tbsp Sorbee (or similar brand) or No-Sugar chocolate syrup. It is available at Walmart's in the Pharmacy area-where they sell the diabetic things.
Put it all together like you would a sundae and enjoy!
I have also blended all together and then re-froze it. MMMMMM-GOOD!!!
Blue bunny white chocolate almond lite bars are quickly becoming a favorite in our house. They are 100 cals but they are so so good! I love to eat the shell first and then the ice cream. It makes it last a little longer and is so freaking good.
I am going to make some frozen yogurt with my yogurt cheese. I am fast becoming addicted to this and it is so easy to make. Just put a tub into a strainer lined with cheesecloth in a bowl and let sit overnight in the fridge, you get the most luscious cramy fat tasting yogurt, it is like devon cream and I eat it as it is with berries or add some flavorings like vanilla and a little ginger syrup to it and it is so good, I can't wait to see what it is like frozen.
I eat fudgcicles too. Had 2 tonight. My kids ate the icecream. Also, remember those lemon ices that they sell in amusement parks? They sell something like that in the grocery store too, but forgot what they are called.
Try Skinny Cow/Silhouette ice cream novelties. They make a wicked ice cream sandwich, fudgicle, and "bongo" pop, all for about 80-120 cal. each and they taste like real ice cream (no chemistry set aftertaste). Also No-Pudge novelties are good too.
The reason that the novelty items (as they're known in the business) are great when you're being careful is that the portion is already measured out. One fudgicle = one serving. That's it. Take one and the rest go back into the freezer.
another consideration is gelato -- it's made with milk but slow-churned to have ice cream like textures. And they have some flavors that I love that's hard to find in ice creams (my fave is hazelnut & tiramisu)
And if you buy it from a store it's usually smaller portions than an ice cream scoop. It is a bit pricier though
While shopping last night I found Breyer's No-Sugar Ice Cream. I read the ingredients and picked up the two flavours they had, Vanilla which has 3g carbs/serving and Chocolate which has 4g/serving. A serving is one cup. I had some as a treat and found it to be creamy...not strong in the flavour dept but not bad for a no-sugar, low carb ice cream!
Here is a really easy and great tasting way to make your own ice cream. Most of us have these ingredients at home. Take one LARGE ziploc and fill it about 1/3 of the way with ice dump about 1/4 c of salt over it in a smaller ziploc pour in 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 table spoon of vanilla, and 1 tablespoon of splenda, zip it up and mix it together in the bag. Place the smaller bag in the larger bag and toss around for about 5 minutes. IT IS SOOOOOO GOOD it tastes just like homemade and if you use fat free milk its even lower in calories and fat. Which is always a plus. You should really try it its yummy.

Dreyer's/Edy's Slow Churned. 100 cals for a serving. My favorite is the Pumpkin. Also Dreyer's Frozen Yogurt...the Caramel Praline is full of gooey stuff!

I have also recently discovered Cal-Smart by Breyers here in Canada. I LOVE the chocolate! It is not real rich in chocolate taste, but it's nice and creamy. Sometimes I add a bit of sugar-free chocolate syrup I get in the Diabetic area of Walmarts and some pecan or walnuts (both of which are VERY beneful to the heart)
Ooh that Dreyers pumpkin ice cream is delish! They don't have it in my area but when I was home over xmas break I indulged..(a bit TOO much perhaps) The girl scout thin mint one was pretty good too
