I will no longer do this because I bought two pairs of jeans and they look completely ridiculous on me now that they fit... and now I cant find a single pair of jeans that looks decent...FML

I do this, actually. I bought a range of sizes from 20 to 16, and now I fit into the 16 comfy and the 20s are huge!

So I ordered some of the same pants in 14s and one 12, it's a way for me to sort of check my progress, like will I get them to button today? And also a small reward ready and waiting for me when they do fit comfortably, and I can go to class that day feeling really confident and proud of myself.

This thread actually reminds me that I haven't tried on the smaller pants since last week, and I've lost another 6 lbs. I have to go try them on and see how they fit now! lol

Sorry to double post, but this thread and talking about pant sizes just makes me realize how much sizes have changed over the years. Talk about vanity sizing much?

I remember being a teenager and wearing a six, and I was taken in to the nurse's office and questioned about anorexia (I was very very thin as a teenager due to some medication) so I must have been tiny. I can't recall my weight exactly, but I was small.

And now I'm in a 16 at almost 230 lbs, I'll be a 14 soon, then it just goes down from there. I wonder what size I would be in if I was still in HS? 00? lol!

Just be realistic, clothing manufacturers... I won't feel better about myself cause of the number on my jeans, but because I managed to lose the weight to fit down a size, jeez.

This is exactly why I don't do it - just because its a smaller size doesn't mean its going to actually look good once it fits. I'd rather just wait to buy until I fit into something and can make sure that it looks decent.

Kellye: I'm with you on the vanity sizing. The last time I shopped for pants in a department store (like, a year+ ago), I fit into a size 6! But I knew I had some 8s from Goodwill at home that were still snug, so I was like, "No! This is wrong!" and refused to buy them.

It makes shopping such a pain. You can't just grab your size and be done with it; you have to try your size plus one on either end because there is no standard. Like, I'm a small at Target, but a large by Chadwick's standards, and anywhere from an extra-small to a medium at Walmart!

This is what I do as well. I have wider hips and kind of a long torso and I've had way too may things look absolutely ridiculous on me to do it again. My thought is that just because it's the right "size" doesn't mean it will look good. You should see some of the stuff I used to wear when I first got to goal, just because it was a size 6 or 8 and I could get it over my butt! I was a walking fashion no-no.

It is kind of silly, there should be at least some standardization among sizes. I can get over the fact that a 6 today was a 10 yesteryear, but at least make a 6 at Old Navy the same size 6 at Target! Seriously.

I'm going to go jeans shopping again today. I am determined to find at least ONE pair of jeans that fit me! I'm a 9 fairly consistently. I tried on a dozen pairs this weekend and no 9's were too small or tight, all the 10's were too big, and I even fit fairly comfortably in a 7/8.

I'm kind of thinking about buying, or at least trying on, a 7/8 pair to use it as a measure. I'm confident that I'll fit into that size soon, and I'm pretty sure that's about where I'll want to stay, so it wouldn't be a waste of money. If anything, I'll try a 7 or 8 or 7/8 on just to see where I'm at.

They don't fit... YET... But, they will. They're not FAR from fitting... But probably a good 10-15# more before I'm COMFORTABLE wearing them...

So, I had a thought... Does anyone else buy things KNOWING that they don't/wont fit yet?? As sort of a motivation to keep going??

I've done this for years... But, I've never really been serious about weight-loss until recently.

I have tons of new cute clothes in my closet still with tags hanging off of them... All different sizes...

My hope is that when I go in there and try them on, if something fits that didn't fit before, it's going to be a HUGE confidence boost.

Anyways! Thats all I have to say about that! =]

i TOTALLY do that when i have spare cash (which, being a single mommy isn't very often anymore lol)

however!!! i do have some of my old outfits that i worse before kids still in my closet...and every now and again i'll pull them out and try them on..just to see how far i can pull my skinny jeans up. each time i get a little closer than i was before and it really is a big confidence booster!
thanks for reminding me.. i need to do it again soon. it's been months.. however, i'll wait until my TOM is over with haha (darn those few extra pounds!)

Everytime i clean out my closet I look at them and almost put them in the goodwill pile and at the last min i stick them back in the closet. I can't help myself.

omg..i do the same thing with a pair of jeans i worse freshman year of HS. it's almost like i'm thinking if i throw them out, i'll never be that size again, but if i keep them then there's a chance i'll fit in them again one day lol

I actually just did it for the first time this weekend! I was at The Gap and I found a pair of jeans on clearance for $8!!! They are a size smaller than what I am wearing right now but I think in about a month, maybe less, I will feel comfortable wearing them.

Ahhhhhh!!! No need to buy size 8 for motivation, because I AM a size 8! I bought two pairs of size 8 jeans from American Eagle, and fit perfectly in them
