Grits, I tried to cut out the caffeine and sugar and dairy, but since that meant cutting out my cup of tea/yogurt/fruit/milk from my protein shake, I didn't stick to it long. I have been avoiding all breads/grains/dairy other than those, though. The major dietary change I've made is to add a good "fat" to every meal/snack, like a tbsp of olive oil for cooking meat/fish, or a tablespoon of peanut butter that I'll eat with my snacks. Oh, I also added one more 4 oz serving of chicken or fish to the day.
Not sure how that works, if it's the fats, or just raising the calories (because they were too low before), plus it's early to say if it's a trend that will keep going. My trainer claims it's the fats, and says she's seen it work consistently with her clients, but I can't vouch for that. I just thought it was a weird thing to happen when I was upping the cals SO much. I haven't even had a chance to count them up yet (or rather, the motivation to take the time), but it's got to be easily around 600+ more cals in a day.
I know it's not a low-carb ketosis thing, because I'm still having sugar in my tea, the fat-free yogurt, and in the 2 fruit servings I eat, oh, plus the fruit I put in my protein shake. So, it could be some kind of fluke water weight drop, or it could be mostly fat burn. I think the next few weeks will tell more, but for now my main concern is keeping my cals up so I have energy to workout and get stronger, and if the scale keeps going down, especially with burned fat, that's just an awesome bonus.
I think that the change in workouts has definitely helped, too. The workout portion of the crossfit class is not as much work as I was doing before, but counting my pre-class warm-up, the class warm-up, and the skills instruction, I'm working out longer than I was before and doing movements I avoided before, like push-ups, lol. I'm also just back to skating, after 6 weeks off, so that shakes things up, as well.
FB, congrats on losing the bet!
I'm gonna ask at the Y if they do the bodyfat testing or have an ohmron handheld tester, as I'm curious to see where I'm at. I can see that I have a ways to go, so it would be nice to have a number to compare to later on.

!!

Ya'll rock!
CONGRATS on losing the bet...that's awesome!
