Question serving sizes and just want to know

Hi all.

I have been on my weight loss journey for some time now. I was on WW and lost 15, only to gain it all back. I was looking over low carb diets and honestly I dont think that I can stick with one. However, in looking over the foods on the SBD I saw beans, I do like beans. I am a carb lover all the way, taters, bread, and I do like fruits as well. I havent read the book, so I plan on seeing if my library has it. I didnt see here on the phase 1 list portion sizes for the foods reccommended. Can you tell if there is? Or do you eat till you are full?

Also, my TOM is coming and was wondering if I shouldnt wait till that is over to start. Ideas? And in looking over all the neat recipes I think I CAN do this.

Anything you can tell me I truly appreciate and hope that I can post here and get to know you all. I have lost my way and want my figure back.

Thank you.

You should be eating until you are satisfied but not stuffed. There are very few things on South Beach where we do have to count. We count nuts and dairy. The vegetables/legumes are unlimited and you will need to eat a lot of these.

I would not worry about when your TOM is. This is something that will become a new way of eating/way of life so you will be on it for a long time. You should read the book and prepare by planning your snacks and meals and shopping and then start when you are ready.

Barb has pretty much summed it up! I am a former WW and as soon as I stopped counting points it all came back and then some! I love SBD because there is no counting and such. I love the freedom of it. I don't even mind phase 1. It keeps me in check. But like Barb said you really should read the book first and if you decide to try it I feel it is best to have it on hand as a refrence. Just know that the food list has been revised since the book first came out. We hope you join us in the other thread for our daily chick chat!

Hi Barb.

I did try fiinding the book at the library, but its not there. So, not sure what I'll do now. I really dont want to buy yet another weight loss book

You say the foods have been revised since the book was published. Why? I thought maybe I' d just copy the list from the board here and go that way until I do come across the book. Would that work, do you think?

Thanks so much.

Many people who do not read the book have a hard time figuring out what is on plan and what isn't. It really helps to understand why certain foods are allowed and others are not. At least try to find "The South Beach Diet Good Fats Good Carbs Guide". It is a very handy paperback reference of allowed food and does explain about the diet although not as much as the book. You can get it quite cheaply at Target. You also might check used book stores for the book.

As to why some foods become allowed when they weren't previously, it is because Dr. Agatston becomes aware of new research that changes is view of a certain food. It used to be that you weren't allowed milk or yogurt in phase 1 but several studies showed people tended to lose weight when they consumed milk products. So now it is allowed as long as we keep the fat low. Bananas and carrots are similar we are now allowed limited amounts of these in phase 2 because the glycemic load is low enough not to cause a problem.
