July 2011 PCOS Support Thread
Hello everyone! It's July 1st, which means that our old thread is found here: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/pcos...rt-thread.html
And it also means we can start over again this month to see how we're doing! :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: :carrot: Who's here this month? How are you? What are you working on? How was last month? How's your PCOS management going? |
Who's here this month?
I am! Hopefully for more time than last month. How are you? I'm good. Deeply exhausted, I think, but I'm doing good. I've been traveling so much recently (every two weeks) that I am feeling it in my bones. What are you working on? Well, the most obvious one is maintaining my weight while traveling. I still have the problem that I see "travel" as an excuse to get off plan, because uh-well-I'm-not-home-so-I-can't-possibly-follow-plan and it's an attitude that I REALLY have to change. It's except it's not in the forefront of my mind. I can sit here and blab on about planning and choosing wisely, but when I'm faced with a cookie or a piece of cake, all knowledge (and pain and suffering of losing weight) goes out the window and it's like I've never been on a diet. I don't know how to fix it. I need help! How was last month? Relatively good. In two weeks I took off the weight that I had gained, but never made it back under 165. Now, I only had three days to recuperate my weight again and I saw the scale go down but I left before it finished going down. I'm hoping that since I am now with my family (and they are all thin and eat healthy) that I'll be tempted less. As it stands, I already ate super healthy yesterday.........except for some chocolate that I had brought with me and some cookies my aunt offered me!!!! How's your PCOS management going? Good. I'm still exercising and taking my supplements and while I was traveling last week I got my period, which I thought I wasn't going to get because it was about 2 weeks late. So, YAY! I also got back the results from my endo appointment back at the end of May and my doc is just happy with my weight loss and my lab results are showing everything hormonal and thyroid related is NORMAL!!!!!! YAY. So, I just have to continue to stick to plan because once I hit 160, I will get one of my prizes (a trip!!!!) and this up and down from the travel thing is driving me nuts. Two more trips...... and then hopefully I'm done for the summer/year..... |
Thanks for getting us started, Rana! :)
Who's here this month? Me! How are you? Chugging along despite my allergies. They are terrible this week with all the pollen. What are you working on?
Better than May! How's your PCOS management going? I am feeling better, but labs will tell me at the end of the month how areas are. I'm thinking I'll be adding vitex to see how that helps on the period front. A. |
Who's here this month?
I'm around :) How are you? I'm ok. I've been dealing with some family issues, but I'm feeling better about all of it. I feel awful about just popping on and off here all of the time, but I'm hoping to stick around for a while this time. What are you working on? Eating. I'm doing okay with the exercise, but I have an addiction to food that's driving me crazy. I guess I'm also working on actually sticking to my plans this time. I need to stop giving up on myself. How was last month? It was great! It's the best month I've had in a while. =) I finally have myself back to trying to get healthy. I was doing well the end of last year, but it all went out the window for the most part once the holidays hit. I've been trying to get back on the wagon since, but never stuck to anything for long after that. Last month I got 400 minutes of exercise in and lost 4 pounds. :) Just two more pounds til I'm caught up with my ticker, lol. How's your PCOS management going? Not so great, but I'm finally back to taking my metformin. I was supposed to see my endo back in February, but I never made the appointment. I haven't wanted to go back because I have a feeling she won't be too happy with me. I haven't stuck to taking my metformin, I quit the Vitamin D she had me taking, and I haven't really lost much weight. I really need to make an appointment. |
Who's here this month?
Me :D How are you? I am good :d cannot wait until my birthday at the end of the month as i am having a party :D What are you working on? Trying to loose 5lbs before my birthday on the 29th july How was last month? same old same old i am off for the summe rnow so bored :( How's your PCOS management going? still the same i am on the pill 3 months straight so will not have a period until august now x |
Who's here this month?
I'm here, too. :) How are you? I'm doing alright. I'm still fatigued, but I guess I'm used to that. What are you working on? I'm trying to get exercise in daily, and I'm also trying to figure out what to eat. I've been feeling nauseous because of the metformin, so a lot of foods don't appeal to me. I need to balance low carb with inexpensive, and I haven't got the trick of it yet. How was last month? Last month was good. I didn't have as much weight loss as in May (because I was on P1 of SBD in May), but I didn't gain anything either. A month without weight gain is always a good month! A month without financial gain, however, not as fun. How's your PCOS management going? I'm getting my new bottle of metformin today. I think it really does help me with my weight loss. It doesn't make me lose crazy amounts of weight, but I tend to stall when I'm not taking it. I've been getting regular periods with the metformin. I'm not sure if it's because I've been taking a more absorbable form of calcium, but my cramps are not nearly as bad as they used to be! Just one day of mild cramping instead of three to four days of agony. I have some really good news! I have discolored skin from acanthosis nigricans and it's ON MY FACE. It's under my mouth just above my chin. It's like a very thick and upside down mustache. There's also a patch under my chin to the left. Well, I was washing up when I glanced into the mirror and I realized it was a lot lighter. It's still discernible, but you wouldn't be able to see it from far away. It was grayish-black before, now it's light brown. I thought I was seeing things or the lighting was somehow different, so I asked my mom if she could see a difference and she agreed that there was. I'm so glad to see a visible effect the weight loss has had on my PCOS! I hope my body knocks it off with the excess hair on my neck! Overall, I'm feeling really good about handling the PCOS. Go me! :cb: |
Who's here this month?
I am =D Hello again! How are you? I'm GREAT!!! How are YOU? =D What are you working on? TTC =) We are going to try again and also going to maybe look into fertility help just in case How was last month? It sucked. Especially with my surgery BUT before my surgery I did start walking more andtaking the dog out for runs. How's your PCOS management going? I don't have any management. But I hope I will soon. Going to look up recipes to help with it. Cut back on the carbs and all that good fun stuff. So glad to be back! I will need that extra push to keep me on track. Heap, I am that co-dependent. LOL So, what did I miss? What did I miss? =) |
For the minutes thread, is the goal to beat the previous month or the highest number? That would be fun =)
|
Who's here this month?
Hi, I am nothing2lose from Melbourne, Australia. I am a newbie. I was diagnosed with PCOS about 15-16 years ago. How are you? I am just finishing the first week of phase one of the South Beach Diet. I have lost 2 kilos so far (4.4 pounds). A recent insulin test was 15 (up from 9 a year ago). What are you working on? Losing weight, getting pregnant :) Exercise - I find it hard to do!!! How was last month? Good - I wasnt dieting! ;) How's your PCOS management going? I guess I don't really manage it as such. Which is why I am fat and infertile I guess  |
For the minutes -- it depends who is playing... but yah... there are months where we beat the "old pile" of minutes.
So I failed my sleep test. I couldn't sleep with all the wires attached to me! Felt like a robot woman -- wires coming from my head in my hair, my eye, my cheek, chin, nostrils, finger, chest, back, waist, legs. Oy. Then tossing and turning from 9 PM til 3 AM when the tech took pity and asked me if I wanted to keep trying til 5 AM to log a REM cycle or just go home. I went home. I'm not sure what to do next about all that so I'll have to check with my doc. Oy. DH is on vacation so we're having a lot of family time and outings... navigating the eating out is a bit tricky -- going to a party tomorrow. Mentally, emotionally, and spiritually all is good. Physically of course -- that's a work in progress. Bowling was awful this week -- I swear I get clumsy when I expect TOM. Hopefully I get it this time -- it's starting to feel like I will but it could be another fake out. We'll see. A. |
How are you?
Nervous, I have a doc appointment in a few hours to hopefully get someone who is more aware of PCOS and not a total jerk who just ignores all our questions. We'll see how it goes... What are you working on? Remembering to take birth control to hopefully decrease these cysts and increase my protein intake because it's been helping my cravings immensely! Also, just sticking to my exercise plan as usual. How was last month? It was really hard on me. After all my weight loss I really thought cysts were a thing of my past. I found out last month that my remaining ovary had cysts twice the volume of the "acceptable" range and since we're hoping to TTC soon I took that pretty hard. :( How's your PCOS management going? Ok, I guess? Just just started BCP and haven't really changed much else besides that... I haven't had as much pain in my side so I take that as a good thing... |
Who's here this month?
I'm here! Checking in a little late - haven't had much time to goof off on line this week because work has been crazy busy! How are you? I'm doing well! Feeling good about my progress and feel like I'm falling into tune with my body better. What are you working on? I'm stepping up my exercise regimen this month. I'd like to get myself to 45 minutes on the elliptical. I'm at 30 minutes right now, so I'm confident I can get there. My second goal was to achieve ONEderland and I hit it this morning, weighing in at 199.5. My weight fluctuates, so I'm not planning to count it as permanent just yet. Fingers crossed that I hang in there. It felt so good! How was last month? June was good. My first full month back on target with my weight loss and I feel really happy with my focus and commitment, and of course I have enjoyed the progress that has come from it. I was particularly tempted when I took my DDs to an amusement park. They wanted fried dough...my #1 carb temptation. I LOVE fried dough. I let them get some as their dessert, but it was too hot for them to hold and break pieces off of, so I had to hold it for them and tear pieces off...smelling it in all of it's deliciousness. BUT...drum roll...I didn't eat ANY OF IT. NONE! (I didn't even lick the powdered sugar off my fingers, I swear!!!) I was so proud of myself. It was so hard to not take a "harmless" itty bitty piece...:^: How's your PCOS management going? I've lost 17.5 pounds since starting in May and I've already noticed a big difference in my PCOS. Thanks to the metformin, my cycles have been pretty regular, but I feel like things are working more smoothly. My cycle was a bit lighter and shorter in June, my chin whiskers are growing slower and thinner, and I'm finding that I'm sleeping better at night now that I've dropped some weight. I will beat PCOS. I will. It will not dictate my life. I'm so determined to outsmart it and kick it to the curb. |
Hello everyone! I'm glad you're all here!!!!
I'm back from my traveling (again!!!!) and while I didn't again any additional weight, I'm still up 3-4 lbs from where I was back in May/April and I don't like it!!!!!!!!! Damn the traveling.... but at least this particular trip I was able to eat more healthy and I was watching what I was eating...... I just need to actually lose the weight.... I'm back on the wagon today and will be going to exercise class. Still taking all my supplements, even if I remember at 2 AM....... |
hey girls hope your all well i lost 2.5lbs yesterday only 2.5lbs to go for my birthday goal i hope i get it xxx
|
Congratulations, Ems, you're doing SO well!!!! I know you'll reach your birthday goal!!!!
I wish I had that kind of weight loss right now! |
Treatment of PCOs
:hug:Hello, All!
New here. I am wondering about a chicken / egg question here. I understand that insulin resistance can CAUSE PCOs, but I thought I have also heard that PCOs can cause insulin resistance to develop (or worsen?) ... does anyone know about this or have any experience? I ask because I was thinking of trying a natural, inexpensive treatment to get rid of PCOs, but did not know if that would help the insulin resistance. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Splash :) |
Who's here this month?
I'm new but i'm here! How are you? I'm tired today. I'm having a PCOS flare-up this week. What are you working on? I've been invited to participate in a special PCOS Treatment study. I'm leaving Florida to Chicago next week to see the specialist. I'm trying to blog each step for my friends (mypcostreatment.blogspot.com). How was last month? Better than this month. Bleed was lighter. How's your PCOS management going? It's not being managed at the moment. We're hoping this study will help. |
Hi! I have PCOS and was diagnosed after getting married and trying to get preggo. Gained a ton of weight on Clomid and TTC...then bedrest. Then just being in survival mode with kiddos.
My PCOS has always made it an obstacle to lose weight...I just could break more than 5-10 pounds. But I've finally decided that no matter what my weight, I can still be healthy with PCOS. I've stuck to diet and excercise and it's coming off. Maybe more slowly than others, but I broke that mental block that told me I wouldn't be able to lose weight b/c of PCOS. I believed that for a long time and totally used it as my personal excuse. I wish you ALL luck..whether TTC, maintaining hormone levels, etc. PCOS just downright sucks....bt we can do what we can!! |

Hello newbies!!! Good luck with the journey and the study!
|
Thanks Rana you can do it aswell :D
Does anyone on here have endimitriosis? Iv been having terrible problems with my bowel very sharpe pains like the pcos but it is in my bowel all the time have any of you experiences this? xxx |
ems81wales: Sounds uncomfortable! No, I do not have endo, so no experience with that. Could it be something else? Def get that looked at.
My Check In: So I'm back. We didn't really go anywhere, but DH took a week off and we had a very restful "staycation." But like the first day back Mom's calling me about Dad. Ugh. I really don't know why she's backtracking. I thought we'd agreed last month to get him evaluated! So frustrating. Anyway for myself... still no TOM. It's like CD79. I don't feel like waiting another 10 days to make it 90 days with no period so I already scheduled a doc visit to ask for Provera to "reboot" me. I'm still not sure if I want to go back on BCP though. A. |
Ems.... No, I don't have endometriosis, but I've had those sharp pains sometimes when I have gas (I know, TMI!!!!).
Checking in too, I've been practically perfect for the last week and I haven't lost any weight. I love PCOS..... not!!!! I'm hoping that it'll kick in, someday, again. Tomorrow is another day. Today I'm very low on my calories and I still have pilates to head off to. Maybe tonight is the night that the weight magically disappears.............. |
Who's here this month?
I am :) How are you? I am doing pretty good. I had a fitting for my bridesmaids dress for my brothers wedding, I wasn't so excited for that ... but, I have a goal!! :) What are you working on? Making them take in inches off that bridesmaids dress!! :) Started working on my low carb. I know I can do it, I just need to find more recipes that will keep my variety up!! How was last month? I was fighting the urge to go low carb. But, I know that I need to make this lifestyle change, it is just so hard ... BUT I KNOW I CAN DO IT!! :) How's your PCOS management going? Metformin, BCP, cinnamon ... apparently it is good, according to my last blood tests. Just need to get rid of the weight! :) |
So I am new. Hi! And I'm late considering this is a beginning of the month thread but I am happy to find a pcos/ir and weight loss group that is active so I wanna join in!
Who's here? Me! Courtney. I am 27, married and just adopted our two foster kids. I am a therapist. I live in the middle of nowhere. What else ya wanna know? How are you? Pretty good. Ticked that this weight came back. Ticked that my hormone levels were so jacked up but at least that explains why the weight went back up. Trying to refocus and get back on track. What are you working on? Getting back to low carbon, higher protein and honestly tracking my food intake. Dr upped my metformin this week so adjusting to that and hoping it helps. My initial weight loss goal is to hit 220. Then 199. Then...well, I'll worry about that when i get closer! How was last month? Felt like crap, gained weight, fatigued, blah, blah, blah. But that is over now! How is your pcos management going? It was non-existent for a while..each of my docs thought the other was doing something and I unknowingly got left out. Not anymore! Increased metformin. Still waiting on a period. Debating on birth contol as I don't want to prevent pregnancy but know it's super unlikely (hubby has fertity issues too...lucky us!) and I am not regular without it. Dr two weeks ago gave me a new script and told me to start it after my period...still waiting. Getting back on band wagon for low carb high protien. Thanks! |
Hey there Alliegirl and Courtney! I wish you well on your journeys. You sound like you're well on your way!
|
Posting a quick update.
I've been SOOO lazy about exercise this week. It's TOM for me and it wipes me out. (excuses, excuses!) But, on a good note, this is the first cycle in a LONG time that I haven't packed on water weight. Usually the scale jumps up about 5 pounds, but it's been steadily decreasing each day instead. Weird. I'm officially enjoying ONEderland for the first time in too long! I hit it last week but wasn't sure if it would hold. It has and I'm feeling so proud. Not proud enough to get off my lazy duff to exercise apparently, but still proud. :D |
TOM for me too. However, I am happy to report that my weight is slowly starting to come down finally after stopping the dexamethasone. I am consistently weighing under 160 now :carrot: It sucks that I can't lose weight as fast as I put in on while on steroids.
I have to go back for a blood test next week to see if my androgen levels are still suppressed. I have started back on high estrogen BCP (Zovia 1/50E) and it is making me break out on my face. It really sucks because I was never prone to acne on my face and always had great complexion.. Now I look like I am just hitting puberty :( |
Alliegirl17 -- you rock that dress! :)
nest -- welcome! It is an all month thread -- just that the first post it usually the recap/intro from last month. dogdaysofdiets -- onederland! Woot! :carrot: I haven't seen that in a long time myself. I hope I get back there! nina125 -- hang in there! MY CHECK IN Saw the doc, she's no longer suggesting provera but gave me a 'scrip for orthocyclen and that should kick it into gear. I had asked whether I should or shouldn't go back on and she said it is really up to me but she doesn't think a cycle is needed. I have to think on that. I do have the pills, but I see endoc soon. I wish it were more clear cut for me but it isn't. I don't want more children, so for now it is condoms. I do feel less pcos GRRRR! crazy on the pill but at the same time... I sleep better OFF the pill, and I think I feel better off it in other ways than just sleep. Did I mention I failed my sleep study? My sleep is still not woooonderful but it is better than before. I chalk it up to caregiver stress, and I'm not even the primary caregiver! Bright side -- my kid beat me bowling and got her first strike! :) A |
cheers girls i went to the gp and they have refered me to have a Laparoscopy to see what is going on xxx

Hi All,
I'm new to the PCOS forum, and happy to see that it seems pretty active. Hope I can lend some support and get some support to as we all deal with PCOS. Who's here? Me, 37 years old, and live in San Francisco. How are you? I'm doing okay, but looking for some much needed support. What are you working on? Working on losing 70lbs. I don't follow any specific diet. I try to eat clean whenever possible, and have a rough estimate of the calories I consume, about 1600. How was last month? Up and down. Slowed weight loss, and finding it hard to get my fat butt out the door to exercise. How is your pcos management going? I started the pill to regulate periods, and also help with PMS. My PMS was like a psycho PMS, major depression, migraines, and felt like I was losing my mind. The worst part was that I couldn't predict if it was PMS because having PCOS, I never had regular periods. I couldn't say "oh it's the 25th of the month, I must be PMSing". So Doc said pill would help ease PMS. Unfortunately, the weight loss had definitely stalled since I started the pill. This is a first step for me, and I really want to look into getting on this PCOS. |
Who's here this month?
I am! I'm Cassie aged 21! How are you? I'm doing ok, bit sleepy this AM I just wanted to stay in bed LOL but eh, I'm pretty ok Happy seeing the scale go down! What are you working on? Working on losing this weight and working on the mental aspect of losing weight! Read quite a few interesting books on PCOS and weight management (and just pcos in general) got a lot of information and tweaking my diet/exercise plan to suit! How was last month? It was...it could have been better, not that great on the weight loss front and was defo stressful How's your PCOS management going? A little better I *think* my acne is clearing a bit..skin is looking a bit better, not a ton but a bit. Can't wait to see if the hirsutism will lessen as I get closer to 200 lbs. |
I'm dreading the travel again!
I haven't lost all the weight I had gained in the last couple of trips... sheesh. And nooo, I'm not feeling positive I can maintain. I'm going to be eating out every meal, breakfast, lunch AND dinner. I'll be gone for a week. I'll do what's good for my IR, which is combine the protein with the carbs. But I am afraid I'll be back with more weight. I can't wait until I stop traveling so I can focus on eating healthy and exercising and getting all of this weight off. |
ems81wales: Did you have your Lap. already? Hope it goes/went ok!
redbutton: Welcome aboard! I always love visiting our relatives in SF -- wish I could live there! SMSDREAMER2007: Hang in there! MY CHECK IN: Bowling was fun, but I wish I could fit more exercise in. I have a hard time keeping the carbs down eating out on the weekend -- I know I have to get a grip on it but when the weekend rolls around I want a break too. All this eldercare stress and then dealing with my own fam... it's hard to keep it diet friendly over the weekend. But I have to, otherwise I undo what I've done during the week! Ugh. A. |
Tomorrow is my third WW weigh-in, last week I gained half a kilo, but I had just gotten my period the day before and I bloat like crazy so I'm fairly sure that was the reason for the gain. I will see tomorrow night I guess!
My boyfriend is away for two weeks, I'm having a hard time sleeping in the house alone. Every noise freaks me out, which is totally irrational because we live in an ok area and have locks and security screens but I'm just a wuss. Made a killer minestrone yesterday but was actually a little disappointed at the number of WW points per serving, I though it would be less. Damn beans creeping up my totals. I also made a huge batch of sugar cookies to decorate because I've been reading far too much Sweet Sugar Belle, but I ate two to see how they tasted and brought the rest into work today. I like icing them more than I like eating them :) |
astrope i haventhad the laparosopy yet it could take up to 8 months to haveit done :(
I also have problems with carbs on the weekend hehe |
Hi all!
Who's here this month? I'm here! How are you? I'm ok I guess. Feeling tired and lazy today. It's PMS I'm sure. What are you working on? I'm working on making healthy choices, portion control, and exercising more regularly. How was last month? Last month was good. I dropped a lot of weight, exercised a lot and things went really well for me. How's your PCOS management going? OK I guess. I'm taking Metformin and my periods are regular. |
LaurenBelle -- Hope it is easier to sleep til BF returns. I know what you mean about weird noises.
ems81wales -- Wow 8 mos! Well, at least you have the appt made. That's one step closer! 1049jess -- :welcome2: MY CHECK IN Well, there's some progress being made.
I'll come back later after workout... Hope everyone is having a good day! A |
So...I was doing great (as far as sticking to the food plan) until this weekend. Sorta got back on track today but only half-heartedly.
Tomorrow is going to be better, right? Also, Dr bumped up my metformin by another 500mg since my insulin was still too high. A lot of nausea and headaches over the past couple of days. Hoping that subsides soon. Also hoping it will help get my body back on track so that the work I do (diet and exercise) can get a little better results. |
Im still here just kinda meh. Sleepy, tired, annoyed, frustrated, hormonal..oh how I love you PCOS! LOL. Also love getting yelled at for losing weight (even though I need to for health reasons...jealous people). I've been on plan 9 days now WOOT! (actually more than that but that is when I started counting for my challenge) scale went down by a whopping 4.4 lbs last week WOW hoping to see something close this week (though I doubt I will see the same)
