Hi, I'm Jennifer. I've been on 3FC off and on for a few years, but I'd lose a little then gain a lot (my own fault, I know) and get so disgusted with myself that I'd just avoid all weight loss related sites. They say the third time's the charm, though, so here I am again.

I have most of the symptoms of PCOS and the test results too, but the *official* diagnosis given by my endo is IR only because I only started having symptoms in my early 30s after having 3 children with no problems conceiving them, and she said that *real* PCOS doesn't follow that pattern. I've always been the oddball, though, so go figure. She started me on Metformin (1000mg/day) in late Nov (bc pills aren't an option for me under any circumstances). So far it hasn't helped me lose any or control carb cravings, so it appears I'm going to have to reach waaaaay down into my almost non-existent well of will-power to try to lose the weight.

Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself before jumping into conversations here. Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Hi there and Welcome!

I, too, have been off and on for years. The good thing about the support here is that no matter where life takes you, its always so welcoming when you return.

Sorry to hear about the IR diagnosis. I hope that as you move along your journey, you will find the way to manage your IR in a way that works just great for you and your lifestyle.

Here's a hug to you ! It may not be easy, and it will probably require some trial-and-error, but you can do it! I don't think it's so much will-power as it is either trying it until you find what works best for you or just sheer determination. Remember, "as we know better we do better"... or at least thats what I'm trying to get myself to believe .

Keep in mind there's at least 5 types of PCOS people.
  • traditional PCOS -- anovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance
  • endocrine syndrome X -- anovulatory, increased androgens, insulin release
  • non-traditional PCOS --anovulatory, normal androgens, obese, insulin resistant or type 2 diabetes
  • non-traditional PCOS -- ovulatory, increased androgens, mild insulin resistance
  • idiopathic hirsutism -- ovulatory, increased androgens, no insulin resistance

Metformin never helped me to lose. It just helped me to stop gaining. I think that bit is different for everyone who takes is, which doesn't surprise since there's so many types. Also, over time you may see your dose change. I eventually was up at 2000 and then back off it totally as I worked the diet. I'm trying to get better at the exercise bit now.

You aren't alone though!

hugs
A.

Hi, all!

I'm new to this thread, and recently heard that there is a link between hypothyroidism and gluten sensitivity. Are there others here with gluten issues? Has this been discussed before? And if it has, can you point me in the right direction to find the thread/ or part of the thread?

Any help you can give me will be appreciated.
