Hey Buzz, the first couple of weeks are the crankiest for everyone I think.
Just to show you that it can be done... MY commute is 2 hours. That's right. 2 HOURS door to door. You are up at 6:30, I'm leaving the house then to catch my 7am train. The ONLY way I've survived the last couple of weeks is by planning.
Now, maybe you don't like to eat the same kind of stuff I do, but when I cook and/or prepare my food for the day, I always do extra so I can have it readily available the next day. For example, this week I:
1) Hard boiled 8 eggs - easy to peel and eat in the morning before I leave the house, then at least I have
something in my stomach. I also have breakfast later on, while I'm still on the train.
2) prepared about 3 days worth of carrots and celery, put them in a tupperware container in a bit of water to keep them fresh. In the morning I just grabbed a handful and put them in a baggie.
3) prepared 2 servings of couscous. One day I had this for dinner (along with some prechopped veggies and some chicken), the next day I had it for lunch. Just chopped up some veggies and was on my way.
4) prepared 2 servings of tuna pasta salad (from the pasta that was leftover Sunday evening) for two lunches.
I get up anywhere from 4:30 - 5 am. I also work until at least 5 pm (and remember, 2 HOURS door to door), then I get home and I either have to cook or recently my DF is cooking for us while I go and work out on my elliptical. In the evenings, if I can still muster the energy, I'll go ahead and plan what I'm going to take with me the next day (points and all) and I'll stick that on the fridge so I don't have to think in the morning.
I've also been going to the gym, which means bringing extra food with me to work, so I can eat dinner on the train. Sad, but it's what I have to do right now.
Buzz, you CAN do this, you just have to plan and be strict with yourself a bit until it becomes more of a habit to prepare yourself for each day. Planning your dinners ahead will also help - you know then what you are going to make and then when you get home you just make it and you don't have to think or go over recipes or be misled into temptation
