My dad was encouraging me NOT to do it since I have some knee pain and he had to have total knee replacement on both knees in September and December 2008. I walk 3 miles in an hour 3 times a week. I T-Tapp 3 days a week and do free weights 3 times a week. Is that enough for me or should I be running? Maybe I should wait until there isn't as much weight on my joints before I start? Any suggestions?

Michelle, I've never liked to run either, but like most of us here have always wanted to be "a runner" :D I was getting a little bored w/ my elliptical routine, felt walking was not enough and don't care for cycling. So C25K has been something new and a great challenge to break up the boredom. Really the challenge of it is what motivates me. I do think that running is a great total body workout, but it's certainly not the only way. You already have good variety in your exercise, so I don't think you NEED to be running. So take that pressure off of yourself and start up when or if you really want to. The best exercise is something you enjoy and that you'll continue doing...maybe that will be C25K for you, and maybe not!

Hey everyone. I totally suck this week. Have been OP until last night's dinner. We went somewhere that has no plan friendly food (serioulsy). I ate stead, yellow rice, plantains & chocolate cake. Nice, huh? The bad thing (other than that meal) is I haven't been to the gym since Monday. I need to get back there but life has gotten in the way this week. I'm gonna try to get back today. We have been shutting down @ noon on Friday but I think we're working all day (which is a GOOD thing), so that's out. Maybe this evening or after 3:30 when we close.

Michelle..What is T TAPP? I agree with the others that you might want to check with a doctor before you run. I've been having issues with my left me (injured it skiing about 10-12 years ago). I'm not sure if I should keep pushing it with the running, but it doesn't bother me WHILE I'm running, just afterwards! :)

Hi Rocki!

I think I will wait to lose a bit more, visit my doc and be sure it is ok for me to run. T Tapp is a company formed by Teresa Tapp. It is core strengthening and puts your spine into alignment. She has several workouts. I use the daily workout plus and have done it for so long that I don't have to watch the DVD - I just go from memory. I think she has been featured in several magazines over the years.

Rocki--you crack me up. I hope your meal was delicious last night and you enjoyed it--otherwise it probably wasn't worth it, right? Just move on...you're a pro at this program and you'll put that slip behind you and keep losing.

By the way, your post on the main thread about cheating w/ extra creamies and meal bars made me feel so much better. I thought I was the only person crazy enough to cheat by eating DIET food :D Who does that?!?!?! Last night was my low point--I totally binged on the chocolate mini crisps and had 3 packets. Seriously. That's nealry 400 calories!!! I don't eat that much in a MEAL. Yes, the insanity has to stop.

So I worked off most of those mini crisps at the gym today, and am proud to report that I completed Day 3 of Week 5--the 20 minute run!!! :carrot: It was tough, tough, tough, but I just hung in there, listened to good music and did my little visualization. I had one of those "aha" moments at the end...that if I could run 20 minutes, and lose 30+ lbs on this plan, I can do ANYTHING. I can even stick to just one creamy a day :p It was a very empowering moment

I finished week 1 day 3... struggled a little today, I am thinking of doing week one again next week. I am not really in a hurry to complete this training...I just want a good workout that will eventually get me to my goal.

This has happened to me on a couple of the weeks, where I felt like the 3rd day was harder than the first two. I think it may just be muscle fatigue? I'll bet you'll find the next round easier after a two day break.

Yep, I jumped ahead. I was doing a pretty good workout on the treadmill before I started so it just felt too easy to do weeks 1 & 2. I'm also really slowing down on my weight loss so I wanted to bump up the exercise quite a bit to try and speed things up. I'm not going to even get close to my goal by the end of my contract (Feb. 27) at this rate. Not sure if it has helped yet but I haven't even been sore at all so I don't think my muscles & bones weren't ready. I figured I could always repeat weeks 3 or 4 or both if I needed to and still be at about the same time schedule as everyone else. I'll do week 3 day 3 tomorrow.

Have a great run tomorrow!:)

I'm suprised at how sore I am. I think it's because I'm running at the 6mph instead of jogging at 4mph. When I attempted the running in the fall, I was running on a track so slow that I was barely passing the walkers! Now I feel like the runs are sprints. Yesterday morning was a great workout and still felt like a challenge to me. I wi today and dropped another 3lbs (11 total since Christmas). Just to be even with the weeks, I'm going to rest over the weekend and start week 2 on Monday (even though I only did 2 days this week). I figure if the 6mph run gets too hard, I can always drop it down. Who knows, maybe I'll be able to complete all 9 weeks and still keep up the 6mph. Regardless, this is the most fun I have had exercising in a long time!

Way to go, Gina :carrot: Congrats on your loss and for completing Week 1. That's great that you can run at 6 mph! I hope to eventually bump my speed up again but I get slower as the runs get longer. I try not to go below 5.0 but had to go down to 4.8 on my 20 minute run yesterday. Then I bumped it up to 5.5 for the last 30 seconds :D I've been running next to this little old lady, a bit shorter than me, who runs long stretches at 6.8. She's my inspiration!

Are you still liking the treadmill?

ShineOn 01-10-2009 04:08 PM

That's funny! I can just picture this old woman running like the wind! It's very manageable to run at 6mph when you're only doing it for 60 seconds, we'll see how long I can keep up that pace - but I'm sure going to give it my best try! And yes, I'm loving the treadmill. I can't believe I've avoided them for so long!

Gettin' Goin'

Bought our treadmill at Sam's on Thursday, hubby brought it into the house this morning but needs to get time to put it together. I'm really excited to start the program! I'm going to get him on it, too!:carrot:

I'm excited for you! Good luck getting it put together....sometimes it takes 2 or 3 people to accomplish it :)

Music List for Running

I've been listening to the Podcasts but really prefer to listen to my own music. Any suggestions for those long runs? I'm messing around with my Itunes Library right now and would like some advice in creating a good playlist for today (and going forward). I like the Podcasts b/c I don't find myself checking the clock all the time, but I like my music better, kwim?

Any info is greatly appreciated. I want to get back on track today (after work).

Completed day 1 of week 2 this morning. I was really suprised that the 90 seconds of running and 2 minutes of walking was pretty easy - a little easier than last week for some reason. Maybe my body is building already. It was a very pleasant and effective workout. My young accountability partner (23 yr old friend of my daughters) challenged me to do crunches and some upper body work too - so we were gym rats for about 1 1/2 today!!

That's great! I remember feeling the same way about week 2. I think after week 1 I found my groove :)

I went to the gym on Saturday--I really didn't want to after Friday's run but went to hang out with a friend. I did 30 minutes of elliptical, which hasn't really gotten easier even after 6 weeks or so of jogging :dizzy: I had time to do a full weights routine and I'm surprised by how sore I am, even today. I guess it's good to break out of the routine sometimes.

I'll be starting week 6 today and it is the last week of intervals. Weeks 7-9 are jogging only--yuck. I'm going to start incorporating classes and the elliptical into my weekly routine to keep it varied. I have GOT to get working on my midsection, and I'm hoping pilates will help!

Rocki, I created a big playlist of running songs and I have it set to random. What kind of music do you like? I chose songs from my library that always make me feel happy or energetic; you know the ones that you always turn up and dance to in the car :carrot: Thunderstruck by ACDC is at the top of my playlist, and I have lots of other 90's hair band rock. Also dancier stuff. Have you checked out any running playlists by other iTunes users?
