Default Atkins, are you doing it? Does it work?

My Aunt called me this weekend to let me know she lost 55 pounds on Atkins! In about 4 months! I am thrilled for her.
A long time ago I lost on atkins, it was hard to give up bread and taters though, and have heard how unhealthy it is in recent years so I have put it out of my head, but, I gotta say, Im thinking about it. SO any info you all have would be great.
Thanks

Peace,
Cathy

Cathy id does work and it works good. I have lost about 60 lbs and have droped from 22-24 to 16's i know many say that it is unsafe that is not true. i have better cholesterol now than ever. i have more energy and lower bp. I am a RN and knw many medical professionals including doctors that recomend the diet if followed. you can not eat your fat and your carbs too. after about a week of the diet all the cravings for the bread and sarches go. i am currently looking at the low glycmic index foods so see which carbs are the better carbs to be eating. there are good carbs and bad ones.

I have to run but will check back later to say more

Hi Cathy,

I have found that Atkins was very difficult for me (when I did it years ago). You might want to ask yourself this one question, will you and can you eat like that (atkins diet) the rest of your life? I think you will answer your own question.

Before I got pregnant last year I was following a low carb diet and did teriffic on it and could honestly say I could eat like that. I just re-started my low carb diet today and I'm so excited to be back on it. There are many low carb diets you can choose from one is from Weight Watchers, the other is a paper back book that is called the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet..

I suggest you read up on it, and find one thats right for you and give it a try (a good try at least 2 - 3 weeks). You'll see your able to eat fruits, veggies and yes some taters on it lololol. I could never give up carbs totally and on the low carb diet you don't have to.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.
Love, Leens

Atkins doesn't ask you to give up carbs totally. There is an Induction phase for 2 weeks that is very, very low in carbs(20grams perday), but then you add carbs back,

You can add back veggies, small portions of lower carb fruits(strawberries, blueberries) or other things like 1/2 potato.

What helps alot of us about Atkins is that it clears the cravings for food very quickly.

But Low Carb diets all work in your body the same way, for the same reason. Read any of the books, to understand how they work, and understand it better. CALP is very well loved here, you eat your daily carbs all at once in one balanced meal per day, and zero carbs the rest of the day.

Good luck!

I think I may try it, I was doing WW, I did it faithfully, the first week I lost .50 pound, the second week I lost .50 pound!! Now my butt is as big a Texas so a half a pound is a good crap, and thats about it. I was bummed about it, so I stoped going. I think WW lets you eat too much food or something, I wrote everything down, didnt cheat and my reward was .50 pound!! I told the leader I could eat and stay fat, I didnt need to be on a diet pay money and not lose. So I am ready for something different.
Do you know where the charts are for the carb. content?
And whats a day on Atkins like?

Peace

Personally, I think that the Atkins program is the greatest. My husband and I (together) have lost over 100 pounds. Unless you cheat, the carb cravings aren't too much to handle, but you must be commited to the program...I repeat...YOU MUST BE COMMITED TO THE PROGRAM and to losing your weight.

I've not shared this with anyone, but occasionally I get a sugar craving. To remedy this problem, I allow myself about a quarter cup of diet soda...it tricks me (my mind and body) into thinking that I (it) has sugar. I rarely have to do it, but it's nice to be able to quelch the craving.

I have stayed on the induction phase of the program, and lost weight quite quickly. I think it has also kept my cravings to a minimum. Sugar/sweets are my downfall...I am an addict, so I take the majority of carbs in green vegetables.

I thoroughly enjoy this way of eating. For the first time in my life, I am actually in control of what I eat, rather than the food controlling what I eat.

I wish you well with your program. You will find great support from these lovely people on this web.

I think that Atkins works well for some people but not for others. We are all different. some people find it hard to eat this way even if it does take away their cravings for carbs. You need to do the research and find out what kind of food plan you will be able to do for a life time since what you do to lose is what you'll have to do to keep it off. For me it is Atkins. It is a good food plan for me and I'll continue to use Atkins but I would be the last person in the world to promote it as a way of life for everyone.

Lee I just found our your secret!!!

It is all individual and you need to do what is best for you and what you can stick to. does it work Yes like lee said if you stick to it and follow it. as you can see there is a hard time for many of us to stay OP as we have had the occasional cheets, and that brings the cravings in. hard times are the TOM and emotional stressful times when your body not only craves the comfort of food but the hormones are acting up. those are the times that anybody has a hard time following any program, the one things is that most of us low carbers are carb addicts and when we have one we can not stop. like an alcoholic or drug addict, we need to stay away from it completely or mosly, the regaining of weight after people who do this diet is because when they stop the go back to the same eating pattern of before high carbs and they do it all at once.

the secret is to slowly reintroduce the carbs, and try to keep the carbs that you do eat to be good carbs (low glycemic index carbs)

So does this diet work yes if you follow it will you gainback No tif done properly (and any diet you gain back if you resttart eating the foods that you ate before)

well i have nothing to add from the others hope that the info helps and you ca be assured that we will be here to help ans support if this is the diet that you chose to fllow. good luck

I went and bought the book last night. I think Im gonna give it a go after I shop this weekend. I am wondering, how many veggies do you all get away with? I would love onion and G. pepper in my omelet, for instance. As well as tomatoes on a salad ect... So what can you eat, other than meat and how much? And do you do the ketone sticks? Everyday? Thanks.

Gods Peace,
Cathy

Cathy,

Congratulations on deciding to start on your weight loss program. The hardest part is getting started. Once you do, you've got to stay on the wagon and ride it to the end. Make sure you read/study the book. In the back of the book, you will find carbohydrate gram values.

All of us work this program differently and allow ourselves different amounts (grams) of carbohydrates. Now, I am going to cheat and copy what rules Atkins has for Induction (the first 2 weeks of the program):

THE RULES OF INDUCTION:

You may eat pure protein (meat, fish and shellfish, poultry, eggs) and pure fats (butter, olive oil, mayonnaise).

Eat no more than 20 grams of carbohydrates a day in the form of salad and other vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli and kale.

Eat absolutely no fruit, bread, grains, starchy vegetables or dairy products other than cheese, cream or butter.

Eat out as often as you wish. Just be alert to hidden carbs in gravies, sauces and dressings.

Eat no food not specifically allowed.

Aspartame may stimulate insulin production; avoid it and foods containing it.

Check the carb content of all foods you are unsure about with a carbohydrate gram counter.

Caffeine stimulates the production of insulin, so avoid regular coffee, tea and cola drinks.

Eat the amount of food that makes you feel satisfied, but not stuffed. If you’re not hungry, eat nothing or have a small protein snack to accompany your supplements.

I can't stress strongly enough how important it is that you read the book and understand the program and its benefits. I would like to share with you what I wrote about the program a while back. It can be found at: http://www.angelfire.com/al4/paula/journal.html

I wish you the best of luck on your journey. We are all rooting for you, Cathy!!!

If you decide to use the ketone strips....cut them in half lengthwise & you will have twice as many
