Default Lo carb

Hi and thank you all for your replies to my thread on "Atkins".

After giving this diet a go (or WOE) I would like to continue on it, BUT.

I would like to somehow produce a diet that is not so restrictive as Atkins, can anyone help.

I am quite happy to keep to all protein for B. fast although I can't think what else to have other than eggs at the moment.

I am happy to have a large amount of protein with a small salad at lunch time thus, hopefull being able to allow myself some carbs in the evening, not particulaly in the form of Pots, Rise or Pasta but to be able to fit some convenience foods in as I work all day and don't always want to start cooking heavily at night. I love fish in breadcumbs and would like to be able to have that instead of meat with my veggies or salad.

Can anyone help me with this. I have a book which recommends 65grms per day but I think that may be a little on the high side. If I do this can I still have all the fats as in cream and mayo?

How can I work out exactly what I am having. I know there are some real experts out there so I am sure someone can help. Please rememeber though, that I come from the UK and don't have the same fods as you do, or at least they aren't called the same.

What would be a sensible amount to start with??

Carbohydrate Addicts Lifespan Program

They are not so restrictive.

Jan,

I would recommend the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet books as well. Although I am on Atkins, I recently borrowed the Heller's cookbook from the library and it would appear they still allow a certain amount of fats along with what they call the reward meal. You eat protein for breakfast and lunch, then have a reward meal for dinner which includes a variety of protein, carbs and fats. I think they even let you have ice cream if you follow the plan as defined in the books. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Hi Jan,

One thing you need to change is your thinking on breakfast. Eggs and bacon need not be your only choice. Any protien can be considered a breakfast food. I have often eaten pork chops or chicken for breakfast. You can also get creative with your eggs. I usually make mine with a little spinach and moz cheese.

And regarding the use of breadcrumbs for fish, some use ground pork rinds as a "breading."

I posted to your Atkins thread but you may not have seen it yet. Atkins isn't as restrictive as you might think. You might not know how to do it correctly. It takes time to figure that out. I know from experience. Here is a link that might help you see what your menu can look like and how much variety you can have with the Atkins plan when done correctly. Give it a try first before you throw in the towel

Hi

Thanks fopr the reply.... I did read your other posting and I have replied to it.

I looked quickly at the site and there are some brilliant things to cook and all straightforward too. I have found the most help on this diet from this board BUT as most of the replies are American, it means that I don't understand some of the foodstuffs eaten or suggested and I can't get hold of them anyway.

I am bashing on regardless, you may or may not know that I wanted to lose a maximum amount of weight for my holiday which is 2 weeks away and I am doing that. That's not to say that I will return to the WOE afterwards as I need to lose about 2stone in all.

I have been on the scales this am, one week after starting and it looks like somewhere in the region of 5lb (the scales seem a long way away although I'm only 5' 2" LOL) which is great, so I will carry on.

Can I ask you about these protein shakes. There may be some on the site you suggested, I haven't got that far yet, but do you have them. How do you do it and how much carb do they give you. The girls I work with are all trying this diet and as they don't have access to the Inet they asked me to find out. They may be a nice change for Breakfas.

I use the Keto brand shakes when I do drink them. to be honest with you I don't use any processed foods often and that includes the Keto shakes. They are a very thick and yummy shake kind of like a milk shake and no after taste either. They are 2 carbs and very filling. You can buy them here........

Jano, if you look in your local nutrional store (I don't know what they are called in England!) they usually have a selection of protein shakes or diet shakes, either in powdered form or ready made in a can. You might want to ask around for where to buy them and also look at the back of the can for nutriional information--make sure you aren't ingesting anything with too many carbs or even better with no carbs at all! If you're not hot on the taste, you can always add yoghurt to it and mix it up with it--my new little trick!

Jano--just did a search on Yahoo for protein shakes in the UK and I found a link for one compnay--there are other listing so you may want to check it out!

here's a recipe for a home-made protein shake. i've never tried it, but i know some folks who really like this.

3 servings of egg beaters [those low fat frozen fake eggs that don't have much cholesterol in them. if you can't find them, i suppose you can use real eggs, but since this concoction isn't cooked and we're all afraid of bacterial contamination in this country, i wouldn't recommend using real eggs.

6 oz skim [fat free] milk

1 tsp vanilla

a couple of packets of artificial sweetener

a few ice cubes.

put it all in a blender and let it rip.

there's no reason you can't add other seasonings to this as well. cinnamon, nutmeg, whatever you feel like.
