I have lived with cystic 'guy-type' acne my entire life. I'm now an adult (25 years old) and here's how I've gotten it under control:
- Change your pillowcases 3 times per week. I'm not kidding!!! This has been the BIGGEST HELP in managing zits for me! Coming up on my TOM I change them NIGHTLY and whatever zits I get will fade away much quicker, otherwise they hang around and any sores I get from picking will NOT HEAL until I've changed the pillowcase! I always shower before bed and pull my hair back so that my hair and any residues from washing it don't touch my face (or touch it as little as possible).
- Splash water on your face frequently during exercise, if you can. Wash your face immediately AFTER exercise and then an hour later (you'll still sweat while your body is cooling down, if you're like me). Don't do this if you're using a heavy-duty facial cleanser with Salycilic Acid or Benzoyl Peroxide--I use Cetaphil. Make sure to wash your face before bed!
- Clean your makeup brushes once per week, especially around TOM!
- Moisturize with a non-SPF lotion after you shower. I use Oil of Olay 'beauty fluid,' it's very lightweight and not greasy. I find SPF lotions way too greasy. I won't always moisturize after my post-workout face-wash because I find that my skin oils come back up to the surface pretty quickly, so I leave it until my nighttime shower.
If I slack off around my TOM and get breakouts, I change my pillowcase and clean my makeup brushes and my zits are gone in a week.
