michele, I had an experience once with security tags. I bought a dress to wear to a wedding. I didn't realize until I got ready to get dressed for the wedding that the security tag was still on it (don't know how I got out of the store with it .)There is no way to get those tags off without the store tool. I had to scrounge through my closet and find something else to wear. I took the dress back and got my money back. Was I annoyed ? What do you think ?

Any time I wear a new pair of shoes, or a pair I don't often wear, I rub Body Glide on the potential spots that will rub or blister. Voila! No blisters (and much less new-shoe pain).

I had to take DS to buy new shoes yesterday. The pair I got him last fall took a dive--the soles cracked open at the ball of his foot. I've never seen shoes do that. Anyway, we tried the store we usually have luck at, but no luck there. We tried a newer store, that seems to have a lot more expensive types of shoes, and he found a really nice pair. He was concerned because they were $65. I think that's quite reasonable. Not like the $200 pair of Nikes that you always hear about!

I'm trying to figure out logistics now. Since DD will have to move, it probably means I'll need to go with her to help. She's acquired furniture since moving into an apartment. I imagine a small trailer would be sufficient, and I could drive DH's Expedition and pull the trailer and she can drive her car to wherever the destination may be. If it ends up being East Coast, I think I'll suggest a moving van instead--they can take the car as well, and we could fly as long as her cats can be in the cabin. I don't know if I could handle a cross-country trip in her Honda. And then there's the inevitable trip just to find an apartment for her. And to top it all off, we're going to Hawaii the first of July. It doesn't leave a whole lot of time to find her a place. (These are the things that are going to keep me up in the middle of the night now.)

Allison. don't cross that bridge until you get to it !!

Michelle,
My DD was in AP Physics her senior year. AP Physics = all the smartest kids in the school, the ones with straight As. Well, after the first test, they all had F's. There was also an open house around then and parents were screaming for blood, freaking out about their kids losing their perfect GPAs the Fall of senior year. Several parents yanked their kids from the class. I asked DD what she wanted to do. She said, "It's really hard, but I want to stay in." I think you hit the nail on the head. Most straight A students don't ever actually have to learn study skills. DD worked her rear end off and ended up with a C and then a B. But here' the thing. Then when she went to college (an insanely hard college), she's sits in a class full of kids who cruised through high school with straight As....and they all flunk the first exam. Most of her classmates were having a nervous breakdown about it. DD didn't---cause she had been in that situation her senior year of high school and figured out how to make it through with study skills, office hours, perseverance, etc. At this school a lot of freshmen leave after the first year cause they can't cope with not getting an A and struggling their butts off for a C. Nothing prepared DD for the realities of a rigorous college education than struggling through that AP Physics class.

And I second the Khan Academy!

I've been chatting with DD on FB. She's going to call CGU to see if just why they denied her. I'm thinking its because she's a music education major and the grad program she wanted was something in psychology. She's still got several other schools that she has not heard from. UTA probably chose her as the grad program is more for music education. Most of the others are positive psychology.

My DS is in a couple AP classes this year. Last year, just one. I think he's signed up for three next year (AP Calc is one). Although he didn't pass last year's AP exam, I'm glad he's pushing himself in these classes. I think it really stresses what is needed for good study habits. When the kids were little, I was always checking to make sure things were done and turned in. As they got to high school, I stopped doing this and made them be accountable. The only time that backfire was one year when DD had an assignment due and we got all the way to school and she realized she'd forgotten it. I couldn't go back because I had to go to work. I told her she needed to learn a lesson from it. I don't think she forgets things any more!

ALLISON my daughter was accepted at USC for her grad work but not into the program she really wanted...and one quite pricey. As she was considering what her move would be she was told by her employer, who she did her honors work with, that they would pay all expenses and give her paid time to study and allow her to work from home on days she had school, as long as she did it locally at SDSU, so she could continue her employment with them.

She did, things have a way of working out.

MICHELLE as your dd goes through this to the end she will be rewarded later in class! It isn't about the grade as much as it is about the effort.

Oh and am I so glad my days of dealing with these "college" issues are so over! :carrot: With 3 kids and 5 colleges, sports, in a short time it was a fast ride :)

bargoo 03-22-2012 11:54 AM

To those of you dealing with college issues I am reminded of an article that Jane Fonda wrote, a long time ago, in her article she is telling about taking her daughter to college and getting her situated, and after doing that she (Jane) couldn't bear to leave, she kept hanging around and stayed so long her daughter was afraid she was going to enroll.
Doen't matter how much money and fame you have, it is hard to see your kids grow up, and of course we do want them to grow up and be responsble, happy adults.

Apparently my "maintenance week" wasn't so maintenance. I stepped on the scale this AM and was not happy with the results. Up 2 lbs. It feels like I've gotten to the point where I take a step forward, step back, step forward... I would love to lock myself in the house but have social obligations this weekend that dictate meals out Friday & Saturday nights. I suppose I'm extra worried bc after this weekend, I've got 3 days of out of town meetings Mon-Wed where "lunch is provided" (:fr:) and I'll be staying with a friend, then the weekend-long bachelorette party is next weekend. It feels like in the face of all those events a gain is inevitable, let alone getting rid of these 2 lbs. So much for trying to show a loss in March.

I'm very frustrated but I'm going to try not to throw in the towel.

Allison, this will work itself out. Both are very good schools and I'm sure DD will end up enjoying whichever program she goes through, despite reservations she might have now.

paperclippy 03-23-2012 08:51 AM

Megan, give yourself a couple days before you count it as a gain. I find that when I'm not being POP I gain a couple pounds of water weight which disappears immediately.

Speaking of which I was down to 134 today, after only two weeks of being mostly OP. I have a feeling I just had like three pounds of water weight hanging around. I am betting when I get back from my weekend trip to NY I will be back at 137 though. :p

The problem with DD and the schools is that she's getting a degree in Music Education, but most of the grad school programs she wants to get into are some sort of positive psychology. I don't think she's taken enough psych classes for her to be considered. The UTA program is the only one in which she applied for music ed--and she's already decided she doesn't want to teach music. I'm wondering if it'd be better for her to stay where she is (if they'll let her now that she's graduated) and take a year or so of psych classes and then reapply. That is, if she doesn't get into any other schools. Indiana Univ and UPenn are still pending. In the mean time, she's going to contact CGU and see if they can give her more info as to why she was rejected.

Meanwhile, my weight is creeping up. I was down to 151.5 on the weekend and can't seem to get under 153 all week.

bargoo 03-23-2012 10:02 AM

I slept 6 and a half hours. That is amazing for me , I usually sleep about 4 or 5. Weight is still holding at just a tad above goal.

bargoo 03-23-2012 11:02 AM

Just got a call from my son from the hospital, new granddaughter is on her way, should be here soon.

ICUwishing 03-23-2012 11:04 AM

Just checking in! Life's on one of those upswing-busy kinda deals. I am still sleeping on the couch, which isn't ideal. Hopefully the repair part for the bed arrives today. I just realized this morning that I haven't run since last Thursday - uh oh. Exercise always gets the short end of the stick with me; I should write those bad cholesterol numbers on my hand somewhere. I have been eating 90% well (no time to sneak-snack) and am only at 2/4 drinks for the week. I remember seeing a 151 on the scale earlier in the week. Crazy, just crazy. TGIF.

bargoo - CONGRATS!!! Hope everything goes as planned!

iriswhispers 03-23-2012 01:03 PM

Yeah, I was one of those kids who school came easy to and I will definitely admit that my study skills entering college were pretty much non-existent. Calculus based physics was such a slap in the face - my freshman year in college, first time I failed a test.

Allison, body glide for new shoes is brilliant! I generally just suck it up and expect some pain, and make sure I'm not wearing them all day or when I have to do a lot of walking the first few times.

I'm not sure that my calorie-counting is helping me much, other than making me keenly aware of the contribution of my wine/beer to my daily totals. I don't know if I'll continue with it, since it kind of brings me down... I've always done better with loose "rules" but since they have been failing me recently I thought I'd try this again.

saef 03-23-2012 04:10 PM

I don't get it: I'm up five pounds from Monday.

If I get my period over the weekend (are we allowed to write that? I never called it Time of Month till I got on this forum), that will explain it.

Feeling rather low again, all due to a number. I hate when my mood gets dictated by a number.
