Wow this thread has been really interesting for me, thanks for everyone's input.
The comment about "is it worth it" is something that I try to keep in mind, but think I need to focus on more.
I have however started when I know I'm going to indulge, rather than going all out and having several things, I instead decide what I want "most" out of x, y and z, and have that, so more often than not I'm still eating far less than I would have before, which seems to be working. So I guess what I'm doing is considering each food and deciding which IS worth it.
