I am reminded why it's a good idea for me to only weigh once per week. Got on the scale this morning after 3 days of eating on plan - up half a pound. I need to banish the scale until Sunday!
I didn't know Trader Joe's had daily samples. I guess I don't pay close enough attention! BUT what really, really, really irks me are the samples at Costco. No--I never take one, but I swear, you get two sample givers at the end of the same aisle and about 20 people hovering to get a sample! You can't get around them. I usually get to Costco just as they open so I don't have to deal with the sample people!
I woke up with a sore throat this morning. I don't know if I'm catching something, if my sinuses are acting up due to the change in "seasons" here or what.
B~soup (sore throat, remember?)
S~2 clementines (hope the vitamin C will help the sore throat!)
L~Lean Cuisine
S~Activia yogurt
D~hmmm. I haven't thought out the day this far yet. Could be Cooking Light's version of a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich or grilled chicken with broccoli or Ravioli and salad.
Gym~45 minutes if I feel up to it. I actually skipped it yesterday due to being so tired from an extra busy day at work
LOL about the BLT's, I was thinking of the sandwich too and wondering why they were so bad! (My BLT sandwiches consist of wheat bread, two strips of turkey bacon, lettuce, and tomato, never mayo.)
The beet bread is pretty interesting. I found the recipe on this blog. She also has one for braided spinach bread and beet bread for xmas. They're slightly different recipes -- the xmas one uses whole wheat flour, the original just has regular flour. Here's the recipe for the bread with regular flour and a couple photos of my finished bread.
Beet Bread
* About 1 2/3 C beet puree
* About 1/3 C milk (I used skim) (the amount is enough to make the beet puree + milk = 2C total)
* 1/3 c. very warm water
* 1/4 c. melted butter
* 2 T. sugar
* 2 t. salt
* 1 egg
* 5-7 c. flour, divided
* 1 T. yeast
* 1 t. coarsely ground pepper (I didn't put this in)
Combine beet puree and milk, heat in microwave until it is warm. Pour it into the bowl of a stand mixer, and add the yeast, water, melted butter, sugar, salt, egg, pepper, and 1C flour. Let stand about 20 minutes (it should get bubbly).
Add the rest of the flour -- the amount depends on your humidity and amount of beet puree. Mix it with the dough hook on the stand mixer -- you have enough flour when the dough forms a pink ball on the dough hook.
Continue "kneading" with dough hook about 5 minutes on speed 2. Let the dough rise for an hour or until doubled (I covered it with a dish towl and put it in a warm oven that was turned off with a pan of water).
Punch down the dough, and form it into two round loaves. I put them in bowls sprayed with PAM to rise, the recipe author put them in thoroughly floured baskets. Let rise another hour or until doubled.
Preheat oven to 350. Turn out onto cookie sheet (she used pizza stones) and put in oven. Cook until internal temperature is 190, it took me about 25-30 minutes. You can't really tell when it's browned because it is too red! Let the loaves cool on a wire rack.
The bread (warm or room temperature) is super yummy with butter, but I'm sure you can put something healthier on it.
Thanks Glory, it did turn out pretty attractive! It tastes good -- not super-beety, more like regular bread, but there is a hint of beetness. If we get a huge number of beets again next year (or if I am not too lazy) I'll try the whole wheat version.
Oh, I should add that the beet puree has to come from cooked beets, not raw beets! I just boiled my beets for a long time until they were tender, then slipped off the skins and dumped them in the food processor.
Popping in before another CRAZY day of meetings starts...
B - Alternative bagel w/ pizza sauce, 2% cheese, canadian bacon
S - Cantaloupe
L - Leftovers - Chicken skewer, lemon spinach couscous, broccoli
S - Popcorn
S - Greek yogurt
D - Giant salad w/ marinated grilled flank steak, many veggies (some grilled, some raw), croutons, spray dressing

The first time I saw BLTs (the bite, lick, taste version) was in a barbara post (bluetoblue). It rang oh so true.
Did pretty very well yesterday. Today, however, I had dinner out with DH and friends and ate most of my very greasy french fries. But I was lookin' and feelin' mighty fine while eating them. (skinny jeans, mojito and wine too)
And the tricky part now.... back on the wagon.
That beet bread looks fab. I just happen to have some farm beets waiting to be roasted.......
B - English muffin w/ light cheese, canadian bacon, pizza sauce
S - Cantaloupe
L - Leftovers - Grilled flank steak and veggie salad
S - Popcorn
S - Greek Yogurt
D - Moroccan Braised Chicken Thighs w/ dried apricots and spices, served over Israeli couscous, with chard cooked with a bit of vinegar and garlic.
S - NSA Ice Cream Bar
Okay, can I just say that bread is QUITE impressive looking? What a great presentation it makes.
Kitty, you can do it - right back on plan for ya'.
Glory, okay so you KNOW you've been on plan, therefore you KNOW you didn't gain a half pound of fat. Don't let the scale get to you. You're smarter then it. Give it time. Give it time.
Yesterday was POP for me. Woohoo!!!
Nothing much planned this weekend. No excuses whatsoever to veer off plan. Not that I've ever needed much of an excuse, mind you.
Oh and today marks an anniversary of sorts for me, the start of when I really, really knew it was time to do something about my weight. I've mentioned this here at 3FC several times, gotta do it again though, as my children brought it up to me last night.
It was September 12, 2001. Yup the day after the horrific tragedy of 9/11. My kids were given the day off of school, we had a big party coming up and I took the opportunity to take them clothing shopping. We headed to the mall - and there was an bomb threat. We were told to evacuate. It was chaos. I couldn't get down the stairs fast enough due to my very large size and let me tell you, people were not kind and understanding. They were scared themselves and very, very pushy, mean and aggressive. I begged my children to go on ahead of me. Begged them. They were so scared those poor babies. I'll never forget the look on their faces and how terrified I felt. Well yesterday, my youngest daughter brought it up to me as we were talking about 9/11. She told me she was so frightened and do I remember how some woman kept on laughing.
Yes, I think I WILL remain on plan today. And for many more days/weeks/months/ years to come. Yes, I'm no dummy and know that I will have my share of off plan days and even some very off, OFF plan days, but for the most part - I'm gonna stick with the program. It's worth it. My children are worth it. They should never of had to experience that kind of fear. Totally avoidable fear, at that.

Thank you for sharing that story rockinrobin, it brought tears to my eyes. Last night a friend was recalling being on the 56th floor of the world trade center. He said there was one loss in his firm. The person who did not get out on time was obese and kept coming out of the stairwell on to the main floors to rest. Of course, nobody knew at that time how important it was to move quickly. More tears, lump in throat.
I will get right back on plan today. It's remarkable how good I feel when I am on plan. One of the most notable things about this go-around with weight loss is that instead of feeling high/low/cranky/tired I feel mostly just great in my body and spirit. Something to be said about doing things in a healthy way
No exercise planned today due to time constraints. Bu I got a nice run in yesterday. That should hold me until tomorrow.
Oh, Robin! Thanks for sharing that story......so moving for me as a mother. I can't even imagine how scary for you and your kids. Similar thoughts have crossed my mind---could I run for my life? Could I chase down an attacker if he has my kids or defend myself and my children physically?
That beet bread looks great. Could pureed canned beets work I wonder? We always wind up with a random can or two thanks to my 8 yo daughter who thinks they look pretty but then we don't ever actually eat them.
I'm still fighting my cold....hot tea would have been a better choice than candy corn last night. Today I'm just going to do my best.
Hi, I just pop on here from time to time to get menu ideas.
bbut i saw your posts Robin and Kitty, and just had to respond. thank you for posting them. We forget sometimes, how important it is to stay fit. Not just for ourselves, but for our families too. I know, after reading this, I will have a POP day!
midwife~we'll heal together. My sore throat is better, but I'm still achy/scratchy if that makes sense. I hate being sick as I have no desire to go to the gym (missed 2 days now and I'm thinking today will be a bust as well).
plan:
B~scrambled egg whites and Morning star farms "patties" of some sort
L~sandwich (DH and I are going out to lunch)
D~hmmm, depends on how I feel once I get home. I may cook or I may do take out.
Yesterday I had chicken, rice and beans for dinner. I didn't think I ate a lot. Perhaps it was salty? I'm up 2 pounds this morning and I woke up famished! It doesn't make sense.
