YOU on a Diet - Support Thread #1
Are you reading YOU on a Diet, following it, or just wanting to read about it? Here's the place for it!
|
i am reading this book!! i just picked it up yesterday. i also watched the Oprah episode about it, and the special on discovery health. it really has my interest peaked. could it really be this simple?? i'm hoping!! i started the plan today. anyone else out there??
|
I am following the 'diet'! I'm in the middle of day two and i'm not hungry at all :) I think once i last a full week or two i am going to buy the book!
Here is my question for you guys: are you eating the whole wheat products daily? Quote:
|
I might be totally wrong, but I was thinking that the book said something about going to the largest part of the midriff if you were smaller...shoot, I can't find that. It is in a shaded area, I believe, towards the beginning of the book if anybody knows what I'm talking about.
Ally, the book is only 9.99 if you buy it on Zooba. I would recommend buying it even if you don't follow the plan to the T because there is a lot of good info in it. |
Whoops, strike that. Zooba won't have it for another week. It is about $13 on Amazon though.
|
Ally, I would recommend the sucked in measurement. That's what they did for everyone on the tv show. I'm sure they have a reason for it, even if they didn't explain, lol. So suck it in :D
|
I watched the TV special on Discovery and it intrigued me. Actually, it scared the @#$! out of me! I am about 140 lbs. overweight and when I saw them holding the enlarged heart I cringed. I can't imagine what my insides look like. I decided it comes down to this - I probably won't make it to 50 (I am 40 right now) if I don't change my way of life. So I ordered the book on Amazon and it should be on my doorstep Wednesday.
Here's to success :cheer: Donna |
This has me intrigued as well.
I also couldn't believe how he told them to suck it in, suck it in! I wonder why? I thinkI'm going to look into this more too! goodluck all |
well yesterday was a big success for me, i felt great! not like i was dieting, and for me, that is really important. i logged all my food in and was around 1600 cals for the day. that is a little lower than the reccomended 1800 for me but i was truly full so i'm not giving it another thought.
off to a good start today, i did the 20 minute beginner workout, my pedometer is all ready (10000 steps today). off to pack my lunch for work. have a great day everyone!! |
I am going to buy the book today. I was also very impressed with the shows (on Oprah and Discovery). It makes sense and those people had good results - so I figure why not give it a try. My husband and I are going to do it together which will make things a little easier, I imagine.
Good luck everyone! |
Still waiting for the book and dvd. I keep reading his site and I Tivo'd Oprah and Discovery Health. Those 2 doctors are great teachers. Any suggestions on Omron HJ 112 pedometer? I looked all over yesterday so this will be ordered also.
I am going to continue with Fat Smash until I read the book. Kathy |
I have the book at home. I'm finishing up another book tonight (Fat Land -how Americans became the fattest people in the world) and plan to start You on a diet next. I read You the owner's manual last year and thought they made lots of sense. I'm not sure if I will change my eating plan or not. I'm pretty comfortable with what I'm doing and already consider it very healthy, but I'm always open to new ideas. :)
|
Tammi,
What diet are your currently following? You have done an amazing job. I am doing LA Wt. Loss. Thinking about buying the book, too, as I didn't catch the Oprah show. Good Luck Lolene |
Thanks Lolene, I started out doing Somersizing (based on the Suzanne Somers diet books). I moved over to calorie counting earlier this year. At that point, I had kind of decided that Somersizing was still based on low calorie, and there were some things on Somersizing that I didn't think I could do forever. I think somersizing is fantastic, and I'm certainly not knocking it because I don't think I could have gotten started without it. It's a great way to prevent cravings and to keep from feeling deprived (which has always been a diet buster for me). I still follow many of the Somersizing principles, which seem to agree with a lot of You on a diet principles - no high fructose corn syrup, no sugar, whole grains instead of processed grains, lots of vegetables and fruit.

I was confused about where to measure my waist as well, but when I saw the Discovery Channel show, he very clearly says "Measure your waist - that's right on your bellybutton". I think perhaps, this is a guess, that he tells people to suck it in so he can actually measure the omentum size. If your muscles are just relaxed and letting everything in your abdomen slouch forward, I would think that would throw off the measurement.
Plus, when I tried to measure my fiance's waist, I quickly found out that its pretty darn hard to "suck in" your bellybutton that much. |
So excited!
Hello Everyone:hug:
The very next day after the the episode aired on Oprah i went and bought the book! My husband and I are on it.. We went through the house and became "you" compliant. I am going to incooperate GI recipes and philosophy with this plan too. I really think that this is attainable.. I have been struggling as of late to maintain healthy eating habits. But i am again motivated to do this! I was amazed how full i feel after eating some nuts before a meal. I have been munching on almonds all night( i work nights)and i am not even hungry! I am really going to try hard to not eat when i get home at 1am. but i havent eaten since 2pm:dizzy: Here's to all of us:carrot: |
SPCD-I got my OMRON HJ 112 from drugstore.com last year. Just had to replace the battery last nite. Going to give this new way of "living" a try. I got tired of WW Core and the meetings did nothing for me after 9 months of it. I did lose 29 lbs, but have regained about 13!! In just 4 months-arggggghhhh!! I picked the book up in Walmart Sund. and started reading it. It did gross me out and scare me to watch Oprah and Discovery to see what I and my DH have been doing to our insides. He and I already have changed our habits-hopefully for good. Good luck everyone. Maybe this is the ticket?!!!
|
Thanks Honey. I checked out amazon and ebay. Am ordering it today. My old pedometer is a joke. I want to be sure to get these 10,000 steps in along with my regular exercise routine.

Hi all,
I bought "you, on a diet" and am continuing to work toward my goal. I think this lifestyle plan makes such good sense. It is similar to what I have been doing all this year - mainly eating whole foods and walking 10,000 steps a day. I now wear my pedometer every single day from the minute I get out of bed. The weight loss hasn't been fast but it has stayed off so far. ( i was at my lifetime high weight on january 1 of this year, slowly dropped 7 pounds between January and June, then got very serious about cutting out the junk food and have lost 23 pounds since then.) Exercise is my challenge. THe past month I have only made 2000-3000 steps a day and my weight loss has slowed dramatically. So I am getting back on track! Have a great day everyone! |
I found a really inexpensive but very accurate pedometer at the Dick's Sporting Goods chain. I think it is their store brand. It only measures miles and steps, but I decided that was all I needed for now and it has done the trick for only $14.99!
|
what is this diet basically about, can you tell me? Like what kind of diet is it and what kind of stuff do i have to eat.
|
Hi folks,
I did not get the book yet..I have an email pal that does have the book and she sent me links of what it is. To me, from looking at these sites, it is similar to the South Beach plan. I am still looking forward on reading and getting some helpful tips and ideas to get me started. Here is the links of the You diet.. http://www.realage.com/doctorCenter/...x?cbr=YDGGLE12 http://www.realage.com/doctorCenter/...pingList.aspx? Hope this helps..Good luck all. |

The Right Way to Measure Your Waist Measure the narrowest part of your middle—which isn’t necessarily around your belly button. Find the smallest area between the top of the hipbone and the bottommost rib. |
I don't really know much about this book, except some good review I have heard.
Is this book useful to those of us following a different diet plan such as calorie counting? Also, when I looked for it on Amazon I saw a couple different ones - witch is the good one? |
I know how dr oz stresses that walking 30 minutes a day is critical but.... i take a 60 hour high intensity class a couple days a week and then on the other days i do 35 minutes elliptical and 20 minutes stairmaster.... every day i walk atleast 15 minutes total carrying a back pack to and from a car. Should i be worried about the 30 minute walking?

ALLEY CAT... I HAVE THE SAME CONCERN. i DO TURBO JAM AND COUPLED WITH DAILY ACTIVITY I HAVE OVER 10,000 STEPS. IS THE 10,000 JUST FOR AEROBIC EXCERCISE? I AM SO CONFUSED:dizzy:
|
For those of you curious about the aerobic steps counting with your 10000 steps I will search my book.
I wish I had known the Omron is at the Walmart Pharmacy counter. I looked in sporting goods. SO I ordered it. I am sure I will not see it until Saturday. I was visiting the boards at real age and people are already fixating on what they can not have. I guess that is normal when you are changing your way of life but I am going to try to avoid that because I will fail. This is all about thinking about things until it is a natural habit. There is such great support here. I bet there are ideas on the whole foods board and ww core plan and even all the other diets with veggies, fruits, and whole grain recipes. DO you think if enough people want to follow this plan we will get our own section. I made some awesome whole grain low fat pumpkin muffins yesterday. For holiday baking my suggestion is get fat free buttermilk powder or buttermilk, whole wheat pastry flour, agave nectar or splenda. Kathy |
I looked through book. I do not see the mention of 10,000 steps I did see it on Oprah and the discovery Health show. I remember one of the ladies checking her steps and said so many were aerobic. They also used the Omron I believe. The discovery health show comes on the 17th again if anyone missed it and can get the channel. Maybe if you get the discovery channel you could all email them to run it on that channel also. Kathy

My thought is that the 10,000 steps is a minimum daily activity level - regardless of what your activity is - this is the minimum number of steps you should take a day. Couple that with the need to get your heart rate up into a target zone and breaking a sweat for about 30 minutes 3-5 times per week, doing stretching and some sort of weight training, and that is where your actvity levels should be. This is just my opinion, but from gathering from what Dr. Oz said on the discovery program and on oprah. I have the book but haven't read it yet.
I put my pedometer on first thing in the morning. I will say that the weeks that I hit 10,000 steps a day and ate whole, healthy foods, are the weeks that I consistantly lost 2-5 pounds - the lesser number on the weeks that I didn't "break a sweat" a the greater number on the weeks that I did. Again, just my opinion but this is how I interpreted his shows. |
oh... and I think he suggests walking because it is something everyone can do, is easy on the joints and costs you zero money -thus an exercise program that one can do for life.
|
In the book on page 147 - it mentions that hitting 10,000 steps per day is optimal.
|
THANKS EVERYONE FOR THE INFO!
I AM WITH YOU OLIVIA86. I KEEP IT ON ALL DAY. I WAS SO DETERMINED TO DO 10,000 I PARKED IN THE BACK OF THE SAMS CLUB PARKING LOT! THAT WAS A FIRST FOR ME :D I PUT MY PEDOMETER ON WHEN I DID TURBO JAM YESTERDAY FOR 45 MIN AND KEPT IT ON THE REST OF THE DAY. DAYS END I HAD 13592. I BOUGHT MY OMRON PEDOMETER FROM WALGREENS. IT WAS 17.99. IT IS NOT AS BIG AS THE ONE ON THE SHOW. IT KEEPS TRACK OF YOUR STATS FOR A WEEK, COUNTS AEROBIC STEPS, CALORIES BURNED AND MILES WALKED. I THINK IT IS COOL! I DONT KNOW HOW ACCURATE IT IS BUT IT SEEMS TO BE ON POINT. MY CURRENT STATS ARE AT 14721 TODAY WITH 3711 STEPS AEROBIC FOR 26 MIN. WHICH IS PRETTY DEAD ON BECAUSE MY TJ WORKOUT WAS 30 MIN. I AM TAKING A MULTIVITAMIN FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I CAN SURELY TELL A DIFFERENCE. WHICH IS SO WIERD FOR ME. TAKING ON DR. OZ'S PHILOSOPHY OF BELIEVING THAT EVERYTHING THAT YOU EAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED LIKE "MEDICATION", I REALLY HAVE PAID MUCH MORE ATTENTION TO HOW FOODS AFFECT ME. |
Since I have heard about this and gotten my book this week..am on chapter 4..am a slow reader Very interesting info. It keeps me going. I have been walking and happy to report a 7 Lbs loss!! :) My waist is still over 60..I guess it takes time...so I will rely on my daily weigh ins..
Just wanted to share.. Enjoy your day! :) |
I am reading this book too, and listening to the audio book. Dr. O & Dr. R. make some very good points, and have a lot of good advice.
I look forward to discussing the book with you ladies, and celebrating our achievments. |
i fell off the bandwagon... kind of depressing. I was doing so well and then i ate a bite of cookie dough and the rest is history. I gained back all the weight i lost but i'm back and ready to lose this freaking weight!
edit: i am really debating myself... part of me wants to do YOU but another part of me is afraid i wont lose as much as South Beach. In the past i lose over 30 pounds on south beach but due to 'falling off the bandwagon' i have slowly gained it all back. If SB worked for me in the past what do you guys think i should do? i am so confused.. |
Oh Ally, but I don't think SoBe worked for you at all. See, if you really can't stick with it and "fall" off then it's probably not really working for you. You need a plan that isn't hard to stick to, that is more easy for you to adopt for life. I think you should try the YOU. As you said, if you don't SoBe religiously, it comes right back on. I'm sorry you regained, but your comments were VERY meaningful to this thread & the reason we're all here. Hang in there & let us know what you decide.
Oh, and love your avatar. What a great example of someone who really toned up with a clean diet and tons of cardio and weight training! |
OK, I'm still confused by the waist. I know I saw with my own eyes on both O and the show that they measured around the belly button (me=40!) Heck, if I can go to the smallest part of my waist about 2" up from that AND suck it in, I'll probably get to 35". That would make a ton of difference. But why is the website saying something different from what we all saw them do. Were the people on tv straight as treetrunks with no visible indention and so they used the bellybutton measurement? Maybe cuz that I don't remember for sure. Does anyone else?
Altho, my omentum is definitely largest around the b-button. Hmmmm..... |
On Oprah, one of the doctors said that it was good to eat the same thing every day. Is this mentioned in the book? Do they say why?
