tara- they do say it is a god idea to eat the same b-fast and lunch everyday to cut down on choices we have to make, and make the eating process more automatic is the way i understood it. they suggest varying dinner everyday to keep from getting totally bored.

ally i totally agree with hrbabe- the best plan is whatever plan you can stick to. good luck with whatever plan you choose!!

I AM WITH YOU OLIVIA86. I KEEP IT ON ALL DAY. I WAS SO DETERMINED TO DO 10,000 I PARKED IN THE BACK OF THE SAMS CLUB PARKING LOT! THAT WAS A FIRST FOR ME :D

I PUT MY PEDOMETER ON WHEN I DID TURBO JAM YESTERDAY FOR 45 MIN AND KEPT IT ON THE REST OF THE DAY. DAYS END I HAD 13592. I BOUGHT MY OMRON PEDOMETER FROM WALGREENS. IT WAS 17.99. IT IS NOT AS BIG AS THE ONE ON THE SHOW. IT KEEPS TRACK OF YOUR STATS FOR A WEEK, COUNTS AEROBIC STEPS, CALORIES BURNED AND MILES WALKED. I THINK IT IS COOL! I DONT KNOW HOW ACCURATE IT IS BUT IT SEEMS TO BE ON POINT. MY CURRENT STATS ARE AT 14721 TODAY WITH 3711 STEPS AEROBIC FOR 26 MIN. WHICH IS PRETTY DEAD ON BECAUSE MY TJ WORKOUT WAS 30 MIN.

I AM TAKING A MULTIVITAMIN FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I CAN SURELY TELL A DIFFERENCE. WHICH IS SO WIERD FOR ME. TAKING ON DR. OZ'S PHILOSOPHY OF BELIEVING THAT EVERYTHING THAT YOU EAT SHOULD BE CONSIDERED LIKE "MEDICATION", I REALLY HAVE PAID MUCH MORE ATTENTION TO HOW FOODS AFFECT ME.

you are doing great!!!! I just really think leaving it on all day keeps me "honest" and I know that if I am dropping under 10,000 then I have to step things up - literally. And it also keeps me making better choices - like when you said that you parked far away from Sam's - - I am starting to do the same thing - especially on days that I know I haven't been as active, then suddenly I know I am making better, more proactive choices within each day when I know where I am step-wise.

justjodi 11-12-2006 08:26 AM

well i really did it yesterday, i went through all of my cupboards and threw out a lot of the stuff that is a no - no. i was sort of shocked at some of the things ie: my beloved tomato soup has high fructose corn syrup. so my cupboards are clean. i find myself reading every label now in the store, looking at the fiber, sugars, and ingredients. i was also sort of shocked at some of the seemingly ok to eat stuff.
of all things i had the hardest time finding a whole wheat bread with none of the bad stuff. i had to settle for a reduced cal ww that does have less than 2% high fruct corn syrup in it. i'll keep reading lables to see if a clean bread actually exists around here.

all in all the past week has not been bad, i followed the "diet" loosely some days and perfectly others. the one thing i did not eat any of was the corn syrup. i walked my 10,000 steps a day, i did the 20 minute exercise routine 3 times this week. for all of my efforts i am down 2.5 lbs and about 3/4 inch around my waist. that's the best result on any plan that i have had in a while. the best thing is i think i may be able to live like this.

how's everyone else doing??

sportmom 11-12-2006 12:20 PM

Great job Jodi! Sounds like the easier question might be to ask what's LEFT in your cupboards!! I've heard dieticians say before to make sugar is not one of the first 3 ingredients (try that with yogurt - hard to impossible!), and that seems slightly more do-able.

Has anyone read YOU-THE OWNERS MANUAL? I think it's the predecessor to this ON A DIET book. I picked it up while awaiting my on hold copy of YOU to come thru at the library.

vmc53 11-12-2006 12:39 PM

i would like to start the You on a Diet but I'm waiting for the book to come in the mail; I don't know what foods to start until I get my book. Any suggestions

jtammy 11-12-2006 12:46 PM

Hi guys,

Still reading the book.

Jodi, If you can't find fresh bread without HFCS, look in the freezer section for Ezekiel Bread for Life. It doesn't have any sugars and is whole grain. I can find it at any of the Krogers around here.

I'm going to try the whole wheat pizza crust recipe later today from the book. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

wip 11-12-2006 11:49 PM

Hey all. I got an email from RealAge today and checked out YOU on a diet. I had seen about 15 minutes of the Oprah show. I new it had to be discussed on 3FC. I think I'm going to try it. I'm off tomorrow and will have to go shopping. Do any of you have kids? I'm wondering about the shift in feeding my family this way too. I hate to have to cook different meals.

Jennifer 3FC 11-12-2006 11:59 PM

Vmc53 - I would wait to start the diet after you've actually read the book - but for now, it might not hurt to start cutting out any foods that have high fructose corn syrup, and incorporating whole grains, fruits and veggies. That will get you pointed in the right direction until you can get an official start.

justjodi 11-13-2006 05:59 AM

thank you ladies for the advice on bread, i'll have to look at a larger store for the Ezekiel sounds good though.

no hrbabe i didn't read YOU the owners manual, i did see the oprah episodes and the discovery health special on that book though. i really sort of trust these 2 doctors, alot of what they say seems to make sense to me. maybe i'll pick it up next time out at the book store.

wip- i have 3 kids i think it is doable most days. really we're just eating lean meats, veggies, whole grains etc. i did keep some of my kids favorites around the house no reason for them to diet all the time. we all eat the same thing for dinner everyday.

i just finished my 20 minute workout for today. i hope you are all doing well!

Tara D 11-13-2006 08:05 AM

The book is interesting and a fast read. Due to financial, constraints, I shamefully read it in the bookstore, and it only took an hour and a half.

tatt 11-13-2006 08:11 AM

well, I watched the show, got the book and hope this time I stick with it ! AFter a minor heart attack and blood clot issues, something's gotta give, and I dont want it to be the heart !!!

Hey Jude 11-13-2006 08:45 AM

For everybody waiting for their books to arrive, go to the You on a Diet website Here.

If you sign up (free) you can get meal plans, shopping lists, etc. It is a good introduction to their plan.

wip 11-13-2006 09:46 AM

Questions already. For all you canuks out there, Canada am is running segments all week with Dr. Roizen. Go to their website and there is eventually a link to the video that aired this am.

My question...What on earth has less than 4 gms of sugar per serving? Even my fibre one cereal (with no bad stuff in the first several ingredients) has 12 gms. I looked at our 1% milk this am and it was 12 gms. Help! Is this some weird us vs. canadian conversion??? :dizzy:

sarahyu 11-13-2006 10:57 AM

I bought the book yesterday. Sam's club had it for $14.00.

I never buy books! I either get the information from sites like this, read it from the library or sit at a book store and read it and take notes. But this time even though I had great resources available I actually bought the book!

I'm looking forward to applying the principles. I'm sort of doing fat smash right now, just day 2, it seems pretty similiar. I need to get away from eating so much meat and cheese-really cheese is my downfall.

Sarah

tatt 11-13-2006 11:24 AM

Believe it or not - Kelloggs Special K - protein plus, only 2 grams of sugar, 9 net carbs 10 g, protein and 5 fiber, and it tastes pretty good !!

justjodi 11-13-2006 06:49 PM

i've been eating bite size shredded wheat, the only ingredient is shredded wheat and it has less than 1 g of sugar per svng.

i didn't think the 4g of sugar per serving rule applied to natural sugars found in milk, fruits, etc. i could be wrong??

SmartButt 11-13-2006 10:03 PM

I just want to point out that Special K has high fructose corn syrup listed as the 6th ingredient, at least online (I don't have any in the house to check.)

Please double check your foods for HFCS just in case!

I'm enjoying my Cheerios, which have just 1 gram of sugar per serving and no HFCS.

However as someone mentioned earlier, even my 2% milk has 13 g of sugar per serving. I don't think one can ONLY eat things with less than 4g of sugar each or you'd be left with a bowl of cheerios soaked in water. Bleh!

woobie101 11-14-2006 12:14 PM

I'm on day two of the Fat Smash Detox Phase 1 diet, but also in the middle of reading the "You On a Diet: The Owner's Manual for Waist Management" book and also got the free exercise CD from Amazon.com. I also caught Dr.'s Roizen and Dr. Oz on Oprah. After completing Phase 1, I will follow the "You On A Diet" program. Love the book. Their approach is that, through knowledge, we can understand how our body's store fat and burn fat, and how to "crack the code" on lifelong waist management. They do this through humor, and diagrams of our digestive systems. They also enlighten us by busting myths or explaining something to us about diets that may seem 180 degrees from what we believed was true. This book is like an adult comic book. It's worth every penny and is motivating me on ..............

Hey Jude 11-14-2006 12:39 PM

The sugar in milk is lactose, a naturally occurring sugar. Fiber One is sweetened with Splenda. I think the 4 gram rule is for HFCS, and other added sugar. I will have to read that part of the book again.

Dr. Roizen was on CTV this morning, and about the waist measurement he definitely said to measure around the belly button while sucking it in. I am guessing this is to measure the omentum fat.

justjodi 11-14-2006 07:20 PM

hello everyone!
i just got back from my 30 minute walk.

so how is everyone doing???

Liliann 11-14-2006 08:20 PM

Justjodi.. Way to go on your walk.. Keep up the good work!!

I am re-reading the book again to build my motivtion up..I caught a nasty cold and it is putting a toll on me.

Does anyone know if Grapenuts is okay? It does not have corn syrup ingredients, but does have 5 grams of sugar. Have been eating it and wonder if anyone else does?

wip 11-14-2006 11:12 PM

Hey all, I have been watching the Canada AM segments. If you're interested just google Canada AM and follow the links. You can watch the video. It is very motivating. Today he said to throw out anything with the following in the first 4-5 ingredients: simple carbs, trans fats, saturated fat, enriched flour as well as anything with more that 4 gms sugar. The sugar thing is certainly the confusing bit. As for my progress...I started yesterday and was eating ok until tonight. Certainly better at least. Is cheese ok? I had a little on a salad. I have been to the gym today and yesterday. Walked for 30 min and did weights yesterday. A lifestyle improvement for sure.

justjodi 11-15-2006 06:30 AM

good morning!
i just finished my 20 minute YOU workout. feeling good ready for the day.

thanks lilian hope your cold gets better quick!

i've been watching the canada am segments also, they are very good.

well i hope you all have a wonderful day!

wip 11-16-2006 12:15 AM

I had a splitting headache after work today and really struggled to decide about the gym. In the end I went and walked for 20 and pushed 10 on the eliptical. It was a weight day but I was afraid to strain my neck any more. I felt a little better physically, but a lot better mentally for going. No excuses... Have a great tomorrow. :D

justjodi 11-16-2006 06:05 AM

great job wip! i know how tough it is to get the exercise in after a long day of work. i always feel better after exercising also. hope today is better.

my eating was off yesterday, i had a picky not sure what i wanted day so i had lots of bites of everything. making a YOU-turn and getting back at it today.

have a good one everyone!!

wip 11-16-2006 06:57 PM

You turn...I like that one. I have been so so on the food. It's kind of hard to find the right stuff to make quickly. Doesthe book have recipies?

justjodi 11-16-2006 07:27 PM

yes there are recipes in the book, i haven't tried any of them yet but most of them look simple enough. several soups and salads as i remember.

i just got back from my 30 minute walk, i almost skipped it but i feel better now that i went.

wip 11-18-2006 10:09 PM

Hey - how are you both doing? I fell off hard yesterday (pizza) and didn't get to the gym today. I have been paying a lot more attention to labels though.:yikes: :yikes:

justjodi 11-18-2006 11:55 PM

i've been off the past 2 days, not sure why just blah feeling. going to give it a better effort tomorrow. still walking and reading labels though.

RocknRoll 11-19-2006 12:17 PM

hey guys! I'm back on YOU! Its just the best plan overall for me! So how is everyone doing?

She-Mullett 11-19-2006 02:04 PM

I just started this, I'm actually still reading. It is hard to read more than a page at a time with a crazy toddler running around.

It is nice to see other people doing well with the plan. We started an exercise routine a couple weeks ago (Bowflex and treadmill) and that alone has made a huge difference. Hubby and I went through our cupboards and tried to figure out what we shouldn't eat. I have a lot more to read, but so far, so good. Hope to finish a few more parts on the treadmill tonight.

justjodi 11-20-2006 06:10 PM

hello rock and meredith- welcome! after all the buzz died down it got pretty quiet in here. i am still plugging away. back on track today after a not so great weekend. i did my 20 min workout this am and will be going for my 1/2 hr walk in a few minutes. hope you are all doing very well

tatt 11-21-2006 01:21 PM

Just got back from the store - read a ton of cereal boxes. I stuck with my Special K-Protein Plus. under nutrution facts it says 2 grams of sugar and in the ingredients HFCS is listed as the 10th ingred. Any thoughts ? I really like this one as it has 10 g protein, 5 fiber and only 9 net carbs, but am thinking of trying something else if you all think that hfcs is too high ? ? ? ? :dizzy:

FaeReverie 11-21-2006 06:51 PM

Hi everyone *waves* I'm Fae, and I was bouncing around for a week trying to decide if I wanted to buy the book.. after seeing the show on Discovery Health I went out and got it! And while Im not following it exactly, I am adding what they say about eating with my calorie-counting and exercise plan (the walking is easy for me, because I dont have a drivers licence or a car, so Im always walking everywhere!) I want to be more aware of what goes in, so I am reading labels and working on eating less HFCS, etc.

The combination of this book with my existing plan seems to be working well for me so far. After two days of eating homemade frozen meals (cooking things, then portioning them out into plastic bags and freezing them), I was able to break my mini-plateau and hit my thanksgiving goal! Yay!

Have a nice holiday week, all!

wip 11-22-2006 12:08 AM

Iwent shopping this eve after work - reading labels. Crazy how much is off limits. I certainly made better choices, but not perfect. I did lose 4 lbs last week but no inches unless I measured wrong. Was probably on program about half the time. Better than nothing!

justjodi 11-22-2006 06:07 AM

great job sherry!! 4lbs is great!

tatt- welcome! the cereal sounds like it fits in the guidelines 4g or less of sugars? if it is one you like then i would stick with it.

faye welcome and congrats on making your goal!!

wip 11-23-2006 11:35 PM

If all goes well I'm going to buy the book this weekend. As long as there's no blizzard I'm off to the big city to visit my mom with my munchkins. Jodi - how have you been doing? Have you been sticking with it? Any inches gone or more energy?? Welcome Tatt. How's it been going for you?

LADY WINDSONG 11-24-2006 03:02 PM

Hopeful

Hello all,

Here I am embarking on YOU!

I go to the store in the morning and am looking forward to taking my list with me and reading labels.

Hope to chat with you soon.

Health and Happiness,
Windsong

FaeReverie 11-24-2006 11:14 PM

Ok ladies, a real question, because I am confused as all heck...

I measured my waist on Monday, sucked-in variety, and it measured 41 inches. (to make sure I was accurate, I had my boyfriend come over and check that yes, I was using the right end, that the tape was straight, and that that is what it really read.) I figured it would be a month before I lost a total of a few inches, since I've been counting calories and exercising for about three months.

Well on Thanksgiving, for some reason I decided to measure myself again. Sucked in, same place (right at my belly button), same way. I measured 38 inches. I checked it, remeasured... said the same. I called my boyfriend (who is out of town visiting family) to make sure that I had remembered my original number correctly. I did. I waited until the end of the day, when I had eaten, etc, and measured myself again. 38. This morning I measured again, just to be safe. 38.

I posted this on another forum, but no one seemed to be able to explain it, so I'm hoping you guys can. It I was just starting out then maybe, maybe I could understand it. Maybe if I had lost significant pounds, I would understand it, but my weight has gone between 190 and 192. I know the book says that weight doesnt matter as much, but I was looking for an explaination. I have none, and I really didn't think that, except for when you first starting losing weight, it was possible to lose that many inches in what, three days?

Please. Help me! Im confused!

She-Mullett 11-25-2006 06:41 PM

Fae, good question. I'm down 2" and only 1 pound. I'm blown away that I can lose that amount around my waist in a week. My hubby lost 2 as well. I went overboard at Thanksgiving and I still lost it. I guess I don't have an answer, only the fact that it happened to me too. I'll take it! Keep on truckin!
