This is from the Kathy Smith website.

Be Consistent
What's the secret to health and fitness success? That's the question I'm asked far more than any other.

The answer: Be consistent. Be consistent. Be consistent.

For more than twenty years, I've exercised every day. Now, does that mean a full, hour-long workout? No. Some days, in fact, I only have time for ten minutes; other days, only thirty; still others, a strenuous, two-hour hike. There are periods when I'm traveling for a week or so and only able to get in a few minutes of exercise between meetings. But whether it's ten minutes, thirty, or a long sixty, I make sure I work up as much of a sweat as possible. Not only because I'm trying to burn off last night's dinner or because I think it'll improve my cardiovascular capacity, but because I don't want to fall out of practice. That's what I mean by consistency - if you fall out of the habit, get right back on track.

Often when I talk to people who aren't exercising on a consistent basis, I get the feeling that they have the best intentions, but allow one excuse after the next to interfere with their workouts. Then, they lose momentum. "I was exercising and then all of a sudden I just stopped," is a common lament. "I don't know what happened; I just sort of quit. I haven't really done it for six months, but I plan on starting again right after my birthday."

But exercise and self-care is not an on-and-off proposition. It's a daily one. If you don't have time to do your regular workout in its entirety you don't abandon the whole thing. That's not the way to approach exercise.

Try thinking of it this way. You have a goal - an ideal, if you will. The ideal is to work out five times a week for at least thirty minutes. But if you can't get in all thirty, then you take what you can. That's the way life works. Just because you fall short of an ideal doesn't mean that you abandon its pursuit. Telling a single lie wouldn't compel you to give up honesty as an ideal any more than accidentally running a red light causes you to break every other rule of the road.

The hardest aspect of exercise is starting again after not doing it for a while. That's why I try not to lose my momentum - so I don't have to start all over again.

Just accept that you'll devote at least ten minutes a day to exercising, the same as you accept that you're going to have to eat, bathe, and dress. Now, those ten minutes may not necessarily be at the gym or on the track. They may be that walk you take by parking a little father away from the office. Or those stairs you climb instead of pushing the elevator buttons.

Once you choose to make exercise a daily part of your life, you start to see opportunities for it where before you saw only barriers. That viewpoint begins to create lifestyle changes, and produces a healthier attitude toward life in general.

Consistency also applies to eating - which is another question I'm often asked: How do you have the willpower to be good all the time?

Answer: I don't think in terms of "good" or "bad." Rather, I focus on eating in a way that serves me, my health, and my body. And that includes eating all kinds of foods, some of which many people may consider "bad."

If I had to explain it in terms of "good" and "bad," I'd say that you only have to be "good" 80 percent of the time. That allows you, pretty much, to do whatever you want with the other twenty and still not upset the equation. You can splurge on a Nestle's Crunch bar. Indulge your craving for Ben & Jerry's. Give in to the tempting smell of apple pie. Just be consistently on track the other 80 percent of the time.

By the same token, the 80-20 rule frees you from the trap of thinking that just because you ate four potato chips, you might as well eat the whole bag.

For instance, when I was pregnant with my first daughter, Katie, I developed the strongest craving for bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches. While this might not seem strange to you, I'd not eaten a piece of bacon for fifteen years. And yet, I could sit down and eat not one but two BLTs at a single meal. Concerned, I checked with my doctor, who assured me that the craving was normal, and perhaps I needed a little more salt in my diet.

After Katie was born, I fortunately lost my craving for bacon. Unfortunately, I've never lost my craving for chocolate. This is an ongoing issue for me. In fact, I'm learning to control my relationship with chocolate. I allow myself to eat it once a week - no guilt, no shame, no worry. The other days, I nibble on fresh fruit, or homemade rice pudding, or suck on a piece of hard candy to satisfy my sweet tooth. I've also learned not to keep large quantities of chocolate around the house. If there were, I'd be tempted to nibble on it every day. I know myself. Giving myself permission to indulge has taken chocolate out of the "bad" food category - and it's no longer an obsession.

I feel a sense of calm about my eating habits. I never feel deprived, and I don't like to listen to someone talk about calories or carbohydrates when I'm eating. My attitude is, when you're eating, enjoy. And when you're satisfied, stop.

That's what I tell people when they ask for my health and fitness secrets. I tell them, the secret is consistency. The three-month, give-it-all mentality is only good for players in the Super Bowl. But when it comes to developing a healthy lifestyle, it's a day in, day out, week in, week out, year in, year out game plan that leads to success.

I've always been impressed with her workout videos and her WOE wounds like IE.

Hello,
We're moving this week-end. I've been having major blood sugar fluctuations. We went out for a steak dinner last night, and I ate my fill. Woke up this morning and felt okay (no morning sickness), and ate 2 bowls of cereal.
Then in the middle of church, I got STARVING all of a sudden, and hardly made it to lunch. When I get this way, I have to stop myself and make myself eat slower because my metabolism is so out of whack right now!
Then I have to stop because if I eat even ONE bite too much I get nauseated again. SIGH!

Haven't gained any weight though. :) Just listening to my body.

carolr3639 01-21-2008 08:47 AM

I'm always starving after church. Why is that? Maybe it's because you really can't get to food and you just think you're starving. ha! Lately I've found that more fiber helps with the hungries.

carolr3639 01-24-2008 06:57 PM

Bob Greene gives an interesting thought on appetite.

One of the toughest obstacles people face when trying to lose weight is learning how to control their appetite. The great thing about the Best Life Diet is that many of the healthy habits you'll adopt on the plan offer the extra benefit of helping to keep a lid on hunger. Check out the appetite-quelling effects of these moves:

Getting moving. Activity, like eating, helps produce pleasure-inducing brain chemicals called endorphins. So, you can get the same mood-lifting effect from exercise as you would from eating.

Avoiding junk food. Some experts suspect that foods packed with sugar or fat can disrupt the signals that help regulate your appetite. Loading up on fruit, veggies, whole grains and lean protein sources instead will help balance your body's hunger-satiety network.

Filling up on fiber. Fiber can't be digested by the body, so it stays with you longer, helping you feel full. Research also shows that fiber helps slow digestion so your blood sugar level stays elevated. This may help delay the release of some of the hormones that tell your body to eat again. Women should be aiming for 25 grams of fiber per day; men should consume 38 grams.

Getting enough water. Eating water-rich foods, such as veggies and broth-based soups, can help you feel fuller on fewer calories, according to research from Pennsylvania State University in University Park. In fact, studies suggest that water drinkers consume 200 fewer calories per day than those who skip sipping.

Eating regularly. Having three meals and a snack or two each day prevents drops in blood sugar, which can lead to you feeling overly hungry and making poor food decisions. Skimping on meals--or skipping them altogether--does nothing to help your appetite.

Dealing with emotional issues. If you address the emotional issues that can trigger eating (like stress or loneliness), you'll find that you just don't have the need to turn to food anymore.

Logging enough shut-eye. Several studies have revealed a link between sleep and obesity. Experts say getting enough sleep can help prevent any disruption...

carolr3639 01-28-2008 10:26 AM

Hi LaDean. Ten inches of snow!!!!!! Don't you live near Portland? That's pretty unusual. We've got lots of snow this year but that's normal for WI. Supposed to rain today and then change to snow and drastically falling temps tomorrow. I'm not supposed to be in the sun so we have an eliptical that is really great. Guess I"m getting used to indoor exercise. I do garden in the summer but try to go out just before sunset.

LaDean 01-29-2008 02:56 AM

Hi, yes its unusual for us. yes they never got any up there till last n ite. so guess there getting it now. not as much as we did tho. its melting today and suppose to warm up and rain. so i can hardly wait. I been exercising in side alot to. just do not want to get sick. i read today dancing is good. so got to get with my dancing more. it works all parts of body. eating is going ok. been eating my 3 meals and feel better when i do. suppose to with diabetic. i try to eat small portions and what i want. have a good week. LaDean

carolr3639 01-30-2008 08:59 AM

I got a new DVD by Kathy Smith for $5. It's really old but never used. It looks kind of hard, though. Eating has been so, so. I'm not as hungry any more since increasing my fiber and that's a good thing. I still snack too much and have to watch that. For some reason this morning I'm not hungry and that is very unusual. I'm usually starving in the morning. It has been a few weeks since the increase in prednisone so maybe I'm getting used to the new level.

carolr3639 01-31-2008 05:50 PM

Maggie Miller has an IE website and here is one of her recent bolgs.

Kugel, Latkes, Brisket and Pie -- Oh My!
If you read my book you know that my mother-in-law knows how to cook. Her meals are truly exquisite down to the china they're served on. And last night was no exception. We had an early Hannukah dinner which meant we had a feast of delicious food spread before us on beautiful platters and serving pieces that my mother-in-law has collected from around the world. On the menu last night was brisket stewed in an apple cider, wild mushroom kugel, potato latkes, spinach and pomegranate salad, asparagus, challah and an English apple-blackberry pie. Everything of course, was handmade. And everything of course (since it was cooked my my mother-in-law), was delicious.

When it came time to fill our plates with food and dig in, I knew to take a smaller than usual portion of everything because there were so many different foods to taste. There was also a hot apple-blackberry pie and freshly whipped cream waiting for us after dinner, and I wasn't about to miss out on that due to getting full too quickly.

When I took only one potatoe latke, my mother-in-law said, "Oh, come on, you can have more than that -- we have so much food!" I cringed at the thought of appearing ungrateful for such a beautiful meal by only taking one latke, but the truth was that EVERYTHING looked so magnificent that I wanted to have all of it.....which meant one latke would be enough if I was also going to have a piece of challah, some of the kugel, brisket, salad, asparagus and .... the apple-blackberry pie with whipped cream. "I need to save room for everything," I said. "I can only eat so much."

After lighting the Hannukah candles and saying a prayer (we did it early this year because some of the family would be out of town on Hannukah), we lifted our forks and knives to begin experiencing the wonderful journey of flavors set before us. Needless to say, absolutely everything was, as my grandmother would say, "Divine!" "Maaaarvelous!" I told my mother-in-law that of all the delicious meals she's made this one ranked as one of my favorites. My husband's cousin agreed.

When we got in the car, Jeremy said to me, "I don't feel stuffed at all." "Neither do I," I said, "Tell me more." So he continued, "Normally I would go back for seconds and I almost went back for another few latkes because they were so good, but I decided to wait and save room for dessert. And by the time we were done with dinner and dessert I realized that my fullness caught up with me, so now I'm full but not stuffed. I'm so glad I didn't go back for seconds because I am completely satisfied right now. That really was a good meal!"

Today as I was walking from the kitchen to my office with leftovers from last night's dinner, two colleagues stopped and stared in awe at my food. "This is one of the many gifts my mother-in-law has," I said proudly. "She is an amazing cook."

And the best part about eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full is.....you get to have the meal all over again the next day when you're hungry at lunch time -- and you don't even have to cook!

I think I am home...

Hello everyone,

A little bit about myself. I live in Va. I work for County government managing and/or implementing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. Taking my 2nd grad school class through distance education towards a Master's degree. I'm 35 years old. Me and my BF have been together about 2 years this time around. We were together about 8 years the first time.

I have been dieting for about 20 years. I always lose weight. I've lost 40 here, 60 there, 130 lbs...but it always comes back. I've done Susanne Somers, calorie counting, Atkins, fat grams, WW at least a million times. Well they don't work for me or last because I am a binge eater/compulsive eater. So I decided this year I needed to do something different. First admit that I am a binge eater. Second work on those issues and third work on building a healthier realtionship with food. I watched by BF drop 50 lbs in a short time just by being conscious of what he puts in his mouth. He does watch sodium because of his BP and he prefers clean non processed foods. He didn't measure anything and did not eat at prescribed times of the day. I'm using him as a role model.

I started the year with what I call the "Shay Plan"-- 3 meals, 3 snacks a day, still planning and measuring but not counting fat grams, calories, points or anything. After researching I realized it was a form of Intuitive Eating. I do want to eventually get away from measuring and eating every 2 hours but I have been dieting for 20 years so I am a work in progress.

I am working on a binge free challenge. I have made it through 5 days. I am really happy about that. I plan to purchase Geneen Roth's learning packages to assist with IE and working on my binge eating. If I think about it too hard it sounds like it doesn't make sense that these two things would go hand in hand but if I delve below the surface I know they do.

I am still working on feeling the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger but I know this is the key for building a healthy relationship with food and myself.

Hi CherryAutumn!

Carol--Thank you so much for all of the articles and websites. I find them extremely helpful. I really liked the Healthy Eating vs Restrictive Eating List. I've written it down because I want to keep it as a reminder. I've glanced through all the posts in this thread but now plan to post often and read the posts and provide support as needed.

carolr3639 02-02-2008 04:38 PM

Welcome likenoother. I see you are a member of the blue team. Does that mean you have a certain eating plan and exercise schedule? Just wondering. Always good to have more imput here.

Shay 02-02-2008 08:06 PM

Carol--Everyone does their own thing. Its more about supporting and challenging each other to do different than we have always done. I'm trying to incorporate more fruits and veggies, drink 72 oz of water a day, and make more of my meals rather than relying on frozen diet meals. When making these meals I'm trying to use healthy products. For example tonight I made pizza with whole wheat crust, light tomato sauce, mushrooms, spinach, 2% mozzarella, and turkey pepperoni.

I already have identified something I need to work on...I have identified several times today where I have been satisfied to stop eating. But what I did was stop, let me stomach settle, then finished the rest of the food. What I should have done was just stopped. I did talk myself out of a 3rd piece of pizza because I was satisfied. A work in progress...

Shay 02-03-2008 08:19 AM

Well...I messed up after being beinge free for 5 days I didn't make it through day 6. I will not beat myself up but will continue with the intuitive eating plan. I have quit TBL challenge. I felt it was too much pressure. They weren't putting any pressure on me but I was doing it to myself. I'm trying not to be as tied to the scale as I've always been and needing to post my weight every week wasn't feeling good right about now. While I am learning about myself in relation to intuitive eating I think there will be some ups and downs on the scale and I only want to be accountable to me.

carolr3639 02-03-2008 02:04 PM

Hi Shay. I know what you mean about being accountable. I'm in a weight loss challenge on another site and I would really like to bow out because I know the pressure can be really demeaning. But I really like the editor of the site so I'll stay with it for her.

carolr3639 02-03-2008 02:07 PM

Should have mentioned that I agree there are lots of ups and downs. In 2 yr. I've lost about 20lb and I know that is so little compared to most here. I get really discourage at times but I know I've been on many diets and couldn't stick with it. Awhile back I posted that to really lose weight and keep it off your meal plan has to be similar to how you normally eat but with smaller portions.

Shay 02-03-2008 04:03 PM

Carol--That's why I like intuitive eating. Nothing is off limits. You can't live the rest of your life cutting out entire food groups and having off limit foods. It makes it so constricting when out socializing, at a party, etc. So I buy the stuff I like and eat it. Granted I'm not comfortable including foods that I know I will binge on in my fridge and in my cupboards just yet but it will come in time.

carolr3639 02-04-2008 10:23 AM

Off and on this thread has been busy but now it has slowed. I keep coming back because I know I can't live with anything else. There is a lot of different sites on the web concerning IE. Some of them, however, are almost like dieting. My first introduction to IE came from Jean Antonello's book, Naturally Thin by Eating More. She advocated eating when hungry but severly limited what she called pleasure foods. The I read Gwen's Shamblin's book The Weight Down Diet and Rob Steven's The Overfed Head. I would really like to read a couple of ebooks offered but I like regular books over ebooks as I don't like to sit at the computer too long. Most of these people have websites. So there is a lot to read about. The last site I posted about here I haven't looked into much but it looks like it will be interesting.

CherryAutumn 02-04-2008 11:00 AM

Sorry things have slowed down so much here. I have a hard time posting when i am struggling cause i had to pull down others with me and i feel like such a hipocrite giving advice or acting like i am doing well.

likenoother - Welcome

Carolr3639- I am glad yo keep coming back

Shay 02-04-2008 12:39 PM

Carol--I unlike most people like to pick 1-2 sources and stick with it. My plan is to stick with Geneen Roth and mainly because I know she addresses binge eating and that is an issue for me.

CherryAutumn--The whole point of this entire website is support. You are supposed to come when you are doing well and when you are struggling. That's what we are here for.

Okay so I didn't do so well last night. Of course I know this binge eating will not be conquered overnight. I am doing well so far today. I ate breakfast around 8:30am. I ate strawberries and vanilla yogurt. I also had coffee with creamer. I ate 100 calorie chocolate bar for a snack. I just finished lunch which was a salad. I feel full so I should have stopped about 3/4 through. I am saving my grapes for later. So I will get there with intuitive eating. I've decided to not weigh myself again until March. I hope I can make it that long. I am so used to weighing everyday.

Shay 02-06-2008 07:10 PM

Hi everyone,
I was trying to wait for others to post again but I'm back. Still trying to get a handle on intuitive eating. Some days better than others but I am determined to get it down.

carolr3639 02-07-2008 10:08 AM

After 2 yr. of this you'd think I'd know better than to NOT check what page we're on!! I put a shortcut to the page and then when it gets to the next page I sometimes don't notice and think no one is posting! Ugh! So I've been here but not posting because I thought no one else was. Hope I can learn from this. I had a good day yesterday but a bad one the day before. On the bad day I ate a strawberry shortcake from Culvers for my lunch. Not that I consider any food good or bad but for some reason I didn't feel good the rest of the day. It might not have been the food but I associated it with the food. It did taste REALLY good but I couldn't finish it even though it was all I had for lunch. I usually try to get someone to share with me but sometimes they won't. Have a great day!!

pattygirl63 02-08-2008 12:42 AM

Hi Everybody,

Sorry that I haven't been around either because I am having real problems with the "diet" thinking. The Food Police is always on my case and I'm having difficulty getting him out of my head. How in the world do you stop thinking "diet" when you have thought this way for soooooooooooo long. I am reading my IE book again. Never finished it because I fell back into dieting routine and bombed out. I've got to change my thinking and I think one place I have to start with the scale. That is going to be really hard. I do exactly what I read today in IE book. If I drop a lb, I think I've been a "good" girl and I gain a lb, I think I've been "bad". I think this is going to be more of a process than I thought. When I eat some thing I can't have on a diet, I think I've been really bad. I am going to start over tomorrow with the IE. I intend to eat only if and when I'm hungry and try to learn when I am satisfied, but NOT stuffed. I've got to get a handle on this. I am going to try not to weigh for at least week. That will be amazing if I can do that.

LaDean 02-08-2008 01:26 AM

Hi, I finally decided to have my carbs, protein and fats daily. fruit is considered a carb for me. so for b.fast i have 3 carbs, 1 oz of protein, 1 fat ,Lunch i have 3 carbs, vegie, 2-3 oz protein, 1 fat, dinner same as lunch. and i have 2 snacks of carbs. so total of 11 carbs a day, 3 fats and 7 oz of protein. so been doing this for 4 days and down 2 lbs. so i am a diabetic and this is how i am to eat. but hey follow the food groups. alot of info out there and its not like a diet its a life of eating. just an idea from me. good luck to all. LaDean

carolr3639 02-08-2008 10:34 AM

Hi LaDean and Patty. I read Jean Antonello's book Naturally Thin by Eating More amost 20 yr. ago and was really impressed. The only bad thing was she really wanted you to limit what she called pleasure foods (sweets) and borderline foods (fried foods, dense calorie foods, etc) and I think that's what kinds of threw me. Anyway, at that time, I talked to either Jean or a coworker and she said if you ate that way it might take 5 yr. to lose 50lb. Now I could kick myself that I didn't stick with it because it was as close to IE as I had come then. But 5 yr. seemed forever......it's really not. Gradually losing is sure a lot better than gaining.

pattygirl63 02-08-2008 02:18 PM

I just read last night in IE book I have that chronic dieters have a tendency to stay away from the very foods that will keep them satieted such as a little fiber, complex carbs, some protein and a little bit of fat. I know I don't seem to be able to eat a lot of carbs either LaDean, but I thought about eating fruit myself. I think I like the idea of eating 6 mini meals rather than big meals. I don't cook a lot any more and it think when I get the hang of IE that I can do this with a little bit of cooking. Example, fruit with a little bit of cheese once a day. A piece of chicken with stif-fry doesn't take a lot of cooking especially with a microwave. A little bit of salad out of the pre-washed ready bags add some tuna or canned salmon and a little bit of mayo. Carol, I remember you have some neat quick salads, etc that I got from you. I really do think it will be easy once I get my thinking straightened out about it all.

Hope we all have a great day.

Shay 02-08-2008 05:04 PM

Hi everyone,
I am so happy to see people posting :carrot:! I'm a newbie. I need ya'll :D!
Well I am planning to buy Geneen Roth's first learning package today. I am struggling right now so I think it would be helpful.

Pattygirl--LOL at the food police being on your case. I haven't weighed since Feb 1st and I won't until March 1st. I'm doing okay because normally I am an everyday weigher.

carolr3639 02-08-2008 05:33 PM

Likenoother, we'll be interested in what Geneen has to say so keep us posted. Thanks.

pattygirl63 02-08-2008 09:31 PM

Hi Carol and Likenooher,

I'm glad to see us posting here too. We all need each other. Especially since there are not many people who live this way of eating. We can help and learn from each other.

I think I did really well today. I didn't eat today until afternoon and then I ate only because I didn't want to get too hungry. I really was not all that hungry. The IE book I'm reading says they learned in their work with their patients that the hungrier you are when you eat the more you are likely to over eat. This is why they say smaller meals and snacks the better. I found that when I did eat that I didn't eat more than I needed. Later, I was not home when I got hungry and should have eaten again. When I finally I did get home and eat, I didn't really eat much and ate light and thought I only ate what satisfied me. However, it wasn't long after I finished that I realized that I had eaten too much because I felt full when the food settled. So it was a productive day of learning for me.

fiddler 02-08-2008 10:16 PM

Hi everyone!

Welcome to all the new posters and thank you to the older ones (especially Carol) for sticking around and always being a source of inspiration for the rest of us. :)

My life is just as busy as always. I've been trying to fit in more "me" time though. I'm working on a sewing project and a knitting project. It has been a long time since I have sewed any clothes for myself, and I'm really enjoying getting back into it.

I started going to a different Curves today. I was becoming more and more dissatisfied with the one I started at for several reasons. When I started, they mostly had the same lady working there every time I came. She was very motivating and also it helped to have the same person taking my measurements all the time because it was consistent. Now they have a whole bunch of part time workers that they just cycle through, and all of them take the measurements differently, which makes them more or less useless for determining progress. Also, the machines needed adjustment and I was beginning to feel like I wasn't getting an adequate workout. The Curves I went to today had much more resistence on their machines and the lady working there was nice, so I plan to go a few more times and then maybe transfer my membership.

I don't usually watch "Oprah," but I made it a point to record yesterday's episode. The show was about how clutter in your house can make you fat. That sure happened to me! When my ex-boyfriend moved in my whole house filled up with useless clutter and I blew up like a balloon. It was such a relief after he was gone to not have all that junk lying around (especially in the kitchen where it deterred me from cooking real food). Hopefully he is now doing the same thing to his new wife ;)

I want you guys to know that even though I don't get the chance to post here very often any more, you are always an inspiration to me. All of you. Even when you think you have nothing positive to say. So thanks for letting me drop in now and then! :)

Thanks, Obi for the kind words. I've been eating pretty well at least I'm not overeating and the weight recently lost is staying off. Hope it continues when we're gone.(We'll be in Portland with DD next week, Lord willing) Just wondering, does any one eat quite a small amount each day? I'm wondering if cutting way back on amounts helps or do you finally even out and not lose? Quite a learning process. Sometimes I'm surprised at the things I don't want. Last night we went out to eat with our son and DIL and my DH whose really been doing good lately ordred the 4 piece broasted chicken and an appetizer of onion rings. They were so big I could only eat one and my DH and son had to finish them. My son and DIL have been going to WW and my DIL has lost 32 lb.....son has lost 15. They are normally big eaters as they are both 6 ft tall. Then a loaf of bread came but it was dry an unappealing so I didn't eat that. I had a half a cup of soup and small salad, 3 shrimp and baked potato. It was very good. Guess I'm getting picky. I hope so!!!

Another Newbie to the group

Not so new to IE. but like most things, it's more fun together :)

I'm going to go back and read the whoooole thread - but is there a shortcut I can bookmark that will just take me back to the end of the thread?

Looking forward to getting to know you all.

llavender--There are 3 dots next to the title of the thread. Click that and it should take you to the last page of the thread since the last time you posted. Now if you came to 3FC and didn't post to this thread it may not be the last page but really close to it.

I ordered the Geneen Roth package but it said 4-6 weeks. If I knew it was going to take that long I would have ordered it earlier. I think I may get the main IE book. I just don't want to get confused because I know Geneen talks about binge eating, which is an issue for me, and intuitive eating. But I guess to get the main idea from the IE and then read Geneen may help me. I will look on Amazon today.

I did pretty good yesterday. I grazed through out the day so I wasn't hungry until about 9pm and then I ate a turkey sausage.

Likenoother, The Overfed Head by Rob Stevens is a short and to the point IE book that you might like.

Thanks Carol, I forgot about that option. I will look that up too on Amazon. I went back and read the Intuitive Eating threads. I think I made it all the way through #3.

:welcome3: llavander. There are 4 other threads of IE under General Diet Plans but you can probably find them by typing intuitive eating into the search engine.

Shay 02-09-2008 03:25 PM

That's how I found the threads Carol. I just ordered Intuitive Eating by Tribole and whatever that other ladies name is...I was planning to order the Overfed Head too but I thought one book at a time. Amazon is always fast so I'm thinking it will be here next week. I'm excited. Doing pretty good so far today.

:hug:Hello Carol, likenoothe and :welcome:llavander:

The Intuitive Eater by Tribole and Resch is the book I have and reading right now. It is good and I agree that Amazon is good at getting things to us faster. I think I ordered mine on a Friday and got it the following Monday or Tuesday. I have learned a lot from this book. Still reading it. You mentioned something about grazing in an earlier post. I have been thinking lately that I am a grazer and that I just might be able to make IE grazing work for me. You know I remember DH Mother telling me on time before she died that she heard Dolly Parton say she never lost weight until she went to 6 small meals a day. In the book I reading they mentioned two groups they tested. Both groups ate 1200 calories a day but one group ate 3 meals and the other one ate 6. The one who ate 6 lost more weight better than the ones who ate 3. I think it is worth the try.

Carol, I haven't been at this very long, but I think you had a good experience with the bread. We went out to Olive Garden with some friends a few weeks ago and DH and I shared a breadstick. There was a time I would have eaten 2 of them at least by myself. I wasn't even tempted. One other thing I learned about myself was this. I was dieting not doing IE. Normally (when not dieting) I would have brought half of my meal home and not eaten all of it. But since I was dieting (Low carb), I knew I wouldn't be eating noodles normally so I ate the whole thing. Over did it bcause I was "diet thinking" instead of "IE thinking". So I think IE was working for you.

Y'all have a good evening and weekend.:carrot:
