  • Hey new mom! I'm a newish mom too (well, mine are 2 and 3...twiblings!). Welcome to 3FC. Firstly, you can do this! I've counting calories either on My Fitness Pal, a site where you can log food/work outs, or in a little journal I bought. I take Saturdays "off" and have an indulgence type food, it works alright for me to stave off cravings during the week. BUT, Whatever works for YOU is what you do. Sometimes it takes some figuring out. it has for me anyway! For some it's tracking at about 1500 calories, for others eating intermittently (skipping some meals) is the way to go, still others are using plans like weight watchers or simply focusing on eating whole foods and lots of veggies. Stick around and share your victories and questions at 3FC, it's very helpful. The ladies (and gents!) here know what you are going through and are never too bashful to offer a word of encouragement.
  • Hi Lucky! You've cone to the right place for motivation and support! Counting calories works very well for many people. I am carb sensitive so I have gone on a low-carb diet instead of counting calories. Like Lecomtes, I take Saturdays off. A cheat day is built into my plan. It serves two purposes: 1) It keeps my metabolism from mistaking my diet for starvation conditions and slowing down on me in an effort to try to conserve calories, and 2) it makes dieting bearable. I know I can diet without a problem for 6 days if on the 7th day, I get to eat whatever I want. And it's worked for me so far! I've lost 14 lbs in a month. For me, that is a good, easy diet, because it's sustainable, it's guilt-free, and it works! Whatever diet plan and/or exercise regimen you choose (and you don't have to do both to start out. Just ease into what works for you), you're going to be fine! You can do this! So browse around here and jump right in! The more involved you get, the more resolve you'll feel. Good luck!
  • Hi Lucky24! Welcome!!! Congrats on your bundle!
For me the counting calories didn't work well. It was a temporary fix that kind of took the enjoyment out of eating for me. I focused on eating whole foods (nothing processed, fresh fruits and veggies, lean meats, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats). So most of my meals had this in common:
    1. Lots of green, mostly leafy. This was my staple. I experimented with different types of dark leafy greens and finding recipes to try (there are a TON out there!). Low cal, HIGH nutrition. Great if you're breast feeding.
    2. Add more color. After green, I made sure to have other colors in my diet with every meal. Sweet potato, carrots, squash, tomatoes. etc.
    3. Eat more often.
Its not just about the calories you put in, its about the amount of nutrients you put in as well. After a baby, you need more nutrients, but it doesn't mean more calories. Actually, the more nutritious and whole foods you eat, the less you eat because your body is getting the nutrients it needs...it doesn't crave more food. I would have to say this was an important thing I learned. I've lost weight eating in this way without feeling hungry, calorie counting, or feeling like I need a cheat day. But trust your body, eat tons of really fresh foods if you can and enjoy your new little one!
