I'm 59 years old. I NEVER thought I'd still be big at this age. I always thought of my excess weight as just a temporary thing and now I've let time slip by. Is it too late to lose????
I know my skin will not bounce back when I lose weight so I won't be able to lose as much as I could have at 30 or 40. I guess saggy skin is better than such as big booty & rubbing thighs! Certainly more healthy!
I just sort of stumbled across this website and was SO excited to find it. I've lost weight before with organized support groups but as soon as I stopped going to the meetings, I would gain my weight back. With 3FC, I can have support 24/7!!! Some of those weight loss stories are so inspirational. I'm going to continue to read and learn from all of you.
I'm eager to get started! Yikes! What do I do?? I think counting calories may be the best for me. I love healthy food...no problem there. I love all foods. My problem is portion control.
Ditto. I am 53 and have gained and lost weight for years. This time, I am finally doing it the right way. Cut out junk food, watch portion size, and EXERCISE. Yep, it works. I am not losing as fast as the younger girls, but I'm losing just the same. Another plus, I feel so much better. Explore this site. There is a lot of good information and the support is the best! Welcome!
We need a "50 and Hot & Determined" group! lol I know there's a 50s thread but, the last time I looked, it felt like it was more silver surfer orientated than I feel. (Disclaimers follow: that was the last time I looked; nothing wrong with being silver, it's just not where I am)
PrincessGrandma (great name): one of the best ways to start is to have a week of writing down everything you eat, without necessarily making big, DIET-type choices, a) it'll give you real insight into where you need to make changes; b) you may find as the week goes on that you begin to make choices based on 'do I really want to have to write down that I ate THIS?'
It's never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle and enhance your appearance too.
I'm nearing 50 and I know that losing weight has helped me. Being lighter is much kinder on my joints and I look younger too!
I'm a pack rat and I have clothes from when I was thin decades ago. It's been fun finding clothes that I can now fit in again, and many of those retro styles are back in fashion!
Counting calories works well for me and many others on this site. Join in and good luck on your journey!
Love the encouragement & advice. I will write down everything I eat this week. Love the "50's & HOT & Determined"...especially the HOT part. One of the problems about gaining all this weight is that I don't feel "sexy". Clothes don't fit right or look good. Right now, I have my goal set at 190. Losing 50 lbs seems overwhelming so I don't want to make it any lower at this time. Right now, I will be totally THRILLED when I get below 200!
There are a LOT of successful 50+ folk around here. You definitely CAN do this!
I am a calorie counter and think it is a GREAT plan. While I do have some saggy-baggy going on, I'm really surprised by how much my skin has shrunk (and is continuing to shrink - even 15 months after reaching my goal). Maybe my expectations were low, but I am genuinely surprised by how my shape has changed during this journey.
In addition to the "Golden Girls" thread - there is a "non-silver" group already established.
The Active Folks Over 50 thread could definitely use some new posters. Not many of us posting these days. C'mon over and join us. We would absolutely LOVE to breathe some new life into the place.
It was established for the purpose of bringing together those of us that definitely DON'T feel "silver".
JayEll is our moderator - and she ROCKS!

I am not over 50 but approaching it fast nonetheless! I will be 45 in a month and am at my lightest weight ever (unless you count those tender years in grade school, LOL). It is never too late to feel better! I did not find age being a major factor in weight loss. The biggest factor for me was making getting my brain into gear and just committing to eating better. You can do this and you will find so much support here at 3FC!
I am another 50+ (58) who is relatively new to the forums and have never found a more supportive group than this one.
I agree it's never too late; over the years I've battled the extra baggage - gained and lost, you know the drill - but this is the heaviest I've been and it began to have some health implications. And I think for us over 50 that is a much more important consideration than just the way we look, although that's important as well.
Calorie counting should work really well for you, especially since you indicated you like healthy foods. Get the portions under control, and exercise, exercise, exercise! I think moving our 50+ bodies is the key to successful weight loss. Of course, make sure you check with your doctor before starting any rigorous exercise program, but you can certainly start out by walking, even if it's just 15-20 minutes a day.
