Ugh, misery loves company.

People are threatened by those who are successful and have some other intoxicating characteristic like a great personality, intelligence, power, etc.

And they may inadvertently try to sabotage this person with backhanded compliments because they are not comfortable with themselves or their place in life, therefore they will try to downplay or take away from the efforts or accomplishments of those who are successful.

As I mentioned in another thread, weight/diet is as sensitive and controversial as discussing politics or religion. It's best to just tell people that he's uncomfortable discussing it and/or it's not up for discussion. But graciously thank them for their acknowledgment and walk away from the conversation.

Congrats to him for the accomplishment!

It is likely they are not used to seeing him at this size and are chatterboxes.

There is a man I see several times a month at work. He very quickly lost a significant amount of weight last year. I am dying to ask if he was on IP because he lost so quickly but looks so healthy. It would not be appropriate for me to ask such a personal qustion so I don't mention it.

But the thing is each time I see him I am shocked again. I just am not used to him at this size. But as someone had said if I had met him at this size I would not even notice what size he is.

They are likely still trying to process the change in him but unfortunately don't but their brains in gear before they engage their mouths.

I think he needs to say firmly that he is at a healthy weight, his doctor approves (true or not) and he doesn't want to discuss it any futher.

My coworkers comment regularly on my weight loss but most are very supportive about it and their comments actually give me a boost each day. My boss (who is like a dad to me) is the only one who was concerned and didn't feel I needed to lose much.
