Question Question re 3 packets vs 4 packets

First of all, Happy Victoria Day to all the Canadians! Hope you're having a great day off.

To everyone else - hope you're having a great Monday!

Ok - this is really just venting and may actually be a question of the internet giving too much (aka incorrect) information.

I was reading a copy of the medical protocol on one of the Ideal Protein clinic websites and it stated that for every 20 pounds over 200, the client should have an extra packet. This makes sense to me as if you are 250 lbs you may need more calories to keep going day to day than someone who weighs 180 pounds.

I started at around 230 pounds and starved for 5 weeks and during that time lost little and sporadically. When I asked my coach about this, all I was told was "if you really need it, you can have an extra egg". I tried that and was left with the same hunger the next day. Finally I decided to just eat the extra packet every day and be done with the hunger. It worked. I am losing more now than I was before and I'm not saddled with hunger all the time.

My question is, has anyone else run into this? I really like my coach, but there have been a couple times when I feel like I've been lead down the garden path (i.e. "sure you can have agave" or "just add an ounce or two of white cheese to your salad, it won't hurt you"). I sometimes feel like my coach isn't really interested so much in me the client as the money I spend every month on packets and vitamins.

As I said.. really just venting, but had to get this off my chest.

I had to add an extra packet to my days because I hike 1.5 hours several times a week and was loosing muscle. My coach suggested it and it worked. I only do them on the days that I hike and it really seems to help.

Wow that is interesting. The coaches really seem to vary. My friend has a coach that is less restrictive than mine but not as liberal as yours seems. I don't have access to any of the restricted foods, which is sort of a bummer. I think the coaching aspect has been okay but not my favorite part of the process.

YES! When I started I was over the 200 pound mark and I was told I HAD to have an extra IP packet a day. There were days that I wasn't hungry enough to eat it or I found it 'inconvenient' at times. But the weeks that I didn't eat an extra IP protein, I didn't loss as well. So I learned to make sure I got that extra protein in. It really does help with the weight loss. All coaches should be telling you this!

Im wondering about this now! LOL I noticed when I started adding in the 3 egg whites in the late morning ontop of my 3 packets I lost more weight that week. I too started at 235. I am now 216...only having 3 packets. I sometimes can't get that 3rd one in! Should I continue to do 4 packets until Im under 200? or should I stick with 3??? So confusing! I think the coaches should be trained better. I get the same feeling from my coach sometimes..

Interesting. I am hovering the 230 mark, and I never thought to add an extra packet. Maybe I should try that this week and see what happens.

My coach never really gave me much info either. I had read in these forums about adding eggs or an extra packet so I decided to give it whirl and sure enough, I lose more weight with the add ons. It seems coaches vary so much, I learn so much more on this website from this wonderful group than anywhere!

Just wanted to say that I have been doing 4 packets of strict IP protein per day since day 1. On days when I do extra walking, yard work, or other "exercise" type activities I will have a 5th packet. Occasionally I will experiment with only have 3 packets and my weight loss is as great.

Thanks everyone.

I was really starting to think I was off in wah-hoo land for just going ahead with the extra packet without really having the coach's ok. I recall reading a post somewhere that someone's coach had stated this isn't a "calorie driven" program, but a carb/fat counter. I don't plan on chowing down an extra 4 course meal, but I will no longer feel guilt for having one extra packet. It's working and I feel better.

I agree with mamabearone- I seem to learn more reading this forum than I have from my coach (who really is a lovely person, but is perhaps a little remiss in coaching info sometimes). How fortunate to have such a wealth of experience and information available in one place.

Thanks everyone. I was having a hungry day yesterday and so I made some pudding for the evening. It hit the spot and I was pleasantly surprised to see the scale went down another 3 pounds this morning.
I love the support that this forum provides. Have a wonderful evening!

I had my 1st weigh in yesterday (down 6lbs) and this was exactly the topic my doctor brought up and yes, it is correct that the heavier u r the more packets u shud have, as u drop weigh, u drop packets.
This is what my doc told me that if u weigh up to 230lbs u consume 3IP packs PLUS a restricted food. Once you reach closer to 200lbs then I can drop a pack. I have been eating 1 restricted food per day since day one, where on some posts I have seen people saying they are restricted. My doc said u need to consume enough for your body and size, as u lose u gradually deduct and that makes sense.

I agree with you all about our coaches. I've asked my coach a couple of times if I was allowed certain things like if I can have gum or coffee mate in my coffee and she said yes to both. But then the following week I found out through these forums that I'm not suppose to have any. I told her that and she was like oh I thought you were allowed. I even noticed last night at my WI that she didn't seem to know how to answer my questions and she was rushing my apt. I don't know if something personal was going on but I just didn't feel the support I was looking for. But that's ok, my DH is a great support and this forum is been great for me.

I'm thinking of adding the 4th pack a day but not sure what you mean by the restricted foods. If it's restricted why would I have them?? Can someone answer that? Is it just better to add a packet or have 2 egg whites?

I think the term 'restricted' is misleading. You do want them. Not having them isn't going to make your loss better. The 'restricted' foods - granola type bars, ridges, soy puffs, etc. have a higher carb count and therefore you should only be eating one a day. The point is they don't want you having 3 a day otherwise you are going over that magical 'carb' number but your body still needs what that 'restricted' item has in it. By substituting a regular packet or 2 egg whites you are denying yourself those needed carbs. After all, this is a low carb diet, not a no carb diet.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you well. So should I have 3 packets a day plus 1 restricted packet?
