TN - a one pound gain is nothing. Stick with your program, and you'll be fine. Remember that the process is the most important part. If you continue on and perhaps tweak it a little, you'll find success. As others have said could be water or whatever. Keep going.

I noticed that some of you are dealing with a lot of hunger. There have been a few days (just 3 in 3 months) since I started IF that I was actually very hungry - real hunger. How did I know it was real hunger? I waited a half hour or so and I was still so hungry it was distracting. If that happens to you, my suggestion is to eat a small amount of protein and drink some water. Do not go forward in your day if you're starving. It will defeat you.

I did notice that on days where I didn't eat very much protein, the next day I was hungry and craving things. So.... while IF doesn't mandate what you eat, good eating habits are still very important.

The goal is to make IF a way of life and we need to navigate the rare days that our bodies are telling us to eat. You will find that with IF, once you have eaten something healthy and lean on those hungry days, that you will be in much better condition to control your eating until your eating window really opens. IF does teach us to differentiate between real hunger and temporary tummy rumblings. It is a learning process.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Have a great IF day, everyone!

Thanks Italiannie. I've had days when I feel hungry, but am busy and forgot about it and later realized that I never ate and wasn't hungry when I finally remembered. I assumed that I wasn't really hungry. However, I have had times when I felt I was starving and it just wouldn't go away, but I have to say that sometimes I force myself to wait until my eating window and then there have been a few tmes that I just gave in and ate anyway. I wasn't sure about whether I should eat or not even when I gave in and ate. So I appreciate your input.

pattygirl63 04-01-2012 04:17 PM

Thanks Thistoo and Ennay for your input about the soda drinks and how they affect you. I think I may be hungrier when I drink them too.

Thisto - I'm so happy for you 1.2 loss. That is great.
I used to would go in a cook a stirfy in the evening, but with DH's DD and her family living here that is about the time they are in the kitchen cooking for their meal so I end up grabbing something quick. However, I have been trying to remember to get in there and prepare something before they start cooking when I can. It definitely would be better to be prepared ahead of time.

Ennay - You sharing about the nibbling experiences are something I need to think about. If I'm not careful I can become a grazer so maybe I need to rethink how I'm doing IF and then tweak. Maybe I need to go to leangains site and read it. I had tried to go to the website once before and it never came up, but maybe I need to do it again.

I did not jump ship  I just had the WORST PMS EVER  -- I found myself really short and grumpy, sometimes it is best to know when to stay away :D Now life is back to :sunny: self.

I did quite well with IF. My plan was to control my PMS eating binges with more controlled IF and I actually succeeded quite well. :woohoo:

I did add a spike day to my routine.
~ Mondays; 24 fast
~ Tuesdays; 19/5
~ Wednesdays; 19/5
~ Thursdays; 24 fast
~ Fridays; 19/5
~ Saturdays; 19/5
~ Sundays; Free to eat 3000-3500 calories during waking hours (I usually end by 5 pm, because I don't want to fast too late on Monday's)

I will catch up with personals, you were quite chatty. :grouphug:

Hello everyone! I hope you can shed some light for me....am I doing IF? I stop eating around 8pm and I usually eat my first meal around 12 noon the next day. However, sometimes if I can't wait, I'll have something at 11:30 and there are even days when I just have to eat something tiny around 10 or so. I do have coffee but I use a splash of nonfat milk and Splenda. I love eating this way because it totally works for me. I also count calories. So what do you think? Does this count as IF? :^:

I think the key is finding what works best and making it a habit. Once you get in the habit of preparing for meals ahead of time, it will get easier for you. Though plenty of people lose with prepackaged meals, so it's not like convenience foods are going to hurt your weight loss in the long run.

Glad you're feeling better, Sum! Great job on sticking with your plan even during PMS. I have a terrible time with it as well, so I can relate. Sometimes it's best just to stay far, far away from people.

I'm no expert, but I believe what you're doing is referred to as an 'eating window'. Some people fast by restricting their calorie intake to certain hours of the day, usually a five hour window, but some people do longer. The key is that if it's working for you, by all means, do it! There's no 'right' or 'wrong', as long as you're not starving yourself, of course.

Welcome to the group! I do 24 hour fasts, but the people who do eating windows will be better able to answer your question.

I'm down to 196.2 this morning, which is super exciting. I'm not expecting to lose a pound a day, of course, but it's nice that I'm catching up from the past three weeks of practically no loss. If I can get to 195.something by my 'official' weigh-in on Wednesday, I'll be thrilled.

Have a great Monday, everyone! I'm fasting on Wednesday and Saturday this week, as usual.

Sounds to me like leangains. A few people here do that. It is where you have an eating window of 8 hours a day.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I shopped all day on Saturday and worked at home ALL DAY yesterday. I am very tired today!

I read everyones post from over the weekend. Congrats to everyone who had successful fasts and/or lost weight so far this week.

On the diet soda thing, I've cut myself down to 1 a day. I try to make it my only non-water drink a day. I know I should give it up but it is my only vice, and I really like it. :(

Have a great Monday everyone (let's pretend its Friday ;))!

I'm so annoyed with myself. I did great on Sat, my 'indulgence' day -- I only ate at about maintenance or below -- no big deal because I plan for it. Then yesterday, I had a 19 hour fast then BINGED. I didn't go *too* crazy but I know I definitely ate more than maintenance....ugh. It's the first time I really felt a bit out of control since starting this journey. I was just SO hungry yesterday for some reason.

I have 6 days until next weigh-in so I pray I can offset the damage. I tend to have an all/nothing mentality at times so I get into this mindset where I feel like I've blown it forever and one day of unhealthy eating will undo EVERYTHING so why bother?? I am acutely aware of it though (thank God) so I was able to catch myself.

I'm on hour 13 and am planning to go to 20 today with a 4 hour window. Ugh, onward and upward.

Hope everyone else is well :)

ennay 04-02-2012 10:11 AM

morning!

Got my workout in this morning and might try for an easy run later before breaking fast, but I have to take the kids to their dr's appts which might push the run too late. I have a hard time running after I break fast. Hoping to push it back an hour today from yesterday. I was on a serious blood sugar rollercoaster trying to detox from spring break and too much crap.

banananutmuffin 04-02-2012 10:22 AM

Ok, so here's a question: Does anyone eat during their window even if you're not hungry?

Yesterday was going to be a refeed day for me. I came off a 24-hr fast about 1:00pm and went to brunch. Had a veg omelette, some bacon, some roast beef. Standard meal for me, and should've been hungry again within a few hours. But 8 hours later I still wasn't hungry! Was hoping for another fast today, so I forced myself to eat a sandwich around 10pm. But I didn't want it... was just trying to make sure I didn't wake up famished today.

So... does anyone else eat when they're not hungry because it's your window or because you're planning a fast soon?

I'm not sure if eating was the best strategy, but on the other hand, if I hadn't, I never would be able to make it through my fast today.

ennay 04-02-2012 10:46 AM

banana - I've done both. In general no, I dont unless my calories are REALLY low. Then maybe I'll toss in a protein shake to make sure I at least get my protein. But not often.

But I dont do fasts as long as you do and I am willing to be flexible with my window the next day. i.e. if I am doing a fast 5 (5 hr. window) day on Monday and I am not hungry for a second meal, I am totally ok with having a 3 hr window that day and then breaking fast 2-3 hours earlier.

Also, when you say 24 hrs....well doesnt that start from the time you stop eating? so wouldnt say 2pm to 2pm worked as well as eating again and then waiting until 10 pm tonight?

Yeah, I could've done that. My problem was that I was already coming off a 24 hour fast and then only ate that one brunch. I was worried that a back-to-back 24 hour fast with only one meal in between might not be the healthiest way to go about it.

My plan was a 24 hr fast, a 12 hr refeed, and then another 18 hr fast.

I'm so haphazard about it all, though, I really need a better schedule.

Good Morning everybody! I hope your weekend was great.

I weighed this morning and lost another 2 pounds since last week..I am so excited to almost be under the 140s yay..Today I am shooting for a 24hr fast.
Good luck to everyone :carrot:

esmi134 04-02-2012 01:00 PM

Thank you Pattygirl63, the surgery went well :)

Sum38 04-02-2012 01:28 PM

I am doing my 24h fast. Surprisingly I am doing well and going strong; I only had about 1100 calories yesterday. I was supposed to have a spike day, but I was just not that hungry. This morning I woke up at 3:30; UGH!! So my day has been super long. -- It is nearly 1:30 in the afternoon and I have some errands to run.... I think I will make it till 5:30 pm :carrot::carrot:

esmi134 :woohoo: Congrats on your loss!

banananutmuffin I only eat when I am hungry. Yesterday I only got in 1100 calories. -- I seem to be starving around ovulation and PMS, and right now, right after TOM my appetite is small...so I am kinda listening to my body.

ennay I hope you got your run in!

35X35 Isn't is just frustrating what one little off day can do to us what comes to waterweight and sodium  Luckily you have some days here to flush that yuck out!

wvuchick Lucky for me; diet soda gives me a huge tummy ache. :) So I am now drinking mostly iced green tea and sometimes I drink Izzy; I "stretch" it by mixing it with sparkling water. Yum!

thistoo Yay! That is fantastic! Nice to see that scale heading south :D

luckymommy
your plan sounds almost like mine, but I usually eat during 5 or 6h window.

Everyone else

KTucke7 04-02-2012 01:57 PM

I drink way too much diet soda. I can't say that it affects my appetite one way or the other though. To those who are concerned about sodium, there are a few diet sodas without any. Dietrite comes to mind but I think there are others. Not that I'm encouraging bad habits... ;)

banananutmuffin As others said, I drink a protein shake if my calories are under 1000 for the day or if my protein is too low. Otherwise, if I'm not hungry I don't eat and it doesn't seem to change anything for me the next day.

One of the things I love about IF is learning the difference between real hunger and cravings/habit. I've found out that I have probably never been truly "hungry." I don't think many have in our society.
