Rockstar SuperNova? Warning - possible spoilers!

Did anyone watch this last night? I LOVED Rockstar INXS last year, but part of the enthusiasm came from the unique concept behind the show. When I heard they were going to do it again this year, I was leary. However, it seemed to turn out ok and I plan to watch the next one.

What did everyone think? Any early predictions?

MTHead 07-06-2006 10:39 AM

I watched! I was really impressed by the first girl, Storm, and by the girl who did Jeferson Airplane, and the Australian guy. I think the girl who did Nirvana might be a good match for this band IF they are not straying too far from their metal roots. I didn't like that guy who did Black Crows (Josh?) - just not a fan of his style at all. And the girl who did Nickelback (Jenny?) was weak, I though. The girl who did Evansence was theatrical, but not too great. I think either "Roxanne" or "Cult of Personality" is a goner tonight.

squeaker 07-06-2006 10:55 AM

See, now I LOVED Josh. Yes, he did the Black Crowes. I thought he was just increadible. But She Talks To Angels is one of my favorite songs. I did like the girl who sang Janis. She was cool! I also liked Toby(?) - who sang Knockin' on Heavens Door. I didn't love the guy who sang Roxanne. I didn't care for the girl who sang Nirvana either. I also didn't care for the guy who sang the Goo Goo Dolls.

I am excited. I think this could turn out to be an interesting show.

Ninacali 07-06-2006 11:20 AM

The girls seem to be stronger this year....unexpected company came by so the Nirvana chick was the last that I got to see but dh watched the rest of it and agrees that the aussie guy was great. The Goo Goo guy good voice but boring performance. I'm enjoying this season.

jules1216 07-06-2006 11:47 AM

My bottom four would have to be the singers of the following songs;
the guy from New Zealand singing Satisfaction or the guy butchering Roxanne (if you are going to change a classic arrangement you better kick butt with it like the guy who sang the awesome version of Knocking on Heavens Door)

I liked all the girls except the one who sang Evanesence (sp?) and I didn't care for the girl that sang Janis--it might be I love Janis--when Joss Stone and Melissa Ethridge did it on one of the awards shows it rocked!!

jules1216 07-06-2006 11:48 AM

Does anyone think Chris from American Idol would have better doing this show???

Suzanne 3FC 07-06-2006 12:20 PM

Chris would have been great for this show! I also secretly hoped to see Marty Casey sitting up there with the others. I just miss him, lol.

jules1216 07-06-2006 12:47 PM

I actually like Marty's personality better and wanted him to win, but after seeing JD with INXS I think they picked the right guy.

Familyof5 07-06-2006 06:16 PM

Liked It

Yep, watched and liked it!! I agree that the girls seem to be pretty strong this year and they have a good chance of having one of them make it all the way. There were a couple of singers that I am interested in hearing them sing something different because it was hard to really get a grasp of how well they sing.

squeaker 07-07-2006 09:50 AM

OK, what was up with last nights vote???? I think Matt was the only one that did really well last night. GRRRRR.

I miss Marty too. He was just so cool.

MTHead 07-07-2006 01:32 PM

I didn't watch (I am catching up on "The Office"), but I heard Matt's downfall was picking a Duran Duran song as an audition for a hard rockin' band. I am more surprised Mangy didn't end up in the bottom three. And I hope Lukas's plan of being this year's JD (Canadian, homeless, bad-boy) backfires in his squishy little receding-hairlined face.

I loved Marty! His Trees song is the first in my ipod at the gym when I hit the cardio.

Telly 07-09-2006 09:28 PM

I thought the girls were really stronger this season too! I heard that Chris tried out for RockStar last season and didn't get past the top 50 but I think he would have done awesome this season - I loved him on American Idol!

I really liked Toby this week but its still early so we'll have to see!! But I LOVE this show!

mauvaisroux 07-10-2006 10:22 AM

Funny how we all like different styles and singers. I didn't mind Marty but hated that Trees song :p I didn't care for JD's personality but rooted for him because I thought he was a better singer.

Lukas has a powerful rock voice but he seems to be a bit of a jerk. I really don't care for the guy that sang Roxanne. But both of them may grow on me as the show wears on.

I didn't think Matt would be in the bottom three. I thought it was going to be Mangi (hated his performance) the guy who sang Roxanne (horrible!) and Josh ( I thought his performance was weak).

Though out of the three who were in the bottom Matt's performance was weakest and his song choice was poor. I was sad to see him go. :( He seems more suited to Britpop.

The girls all seem pretty strong and I did like Azara's performance of the Evanessance song - it was different. Dilana was kind of scary but good (Nirvana song). Jenny ( Nickleback song) was good but not as strong a singer for that type of song. Storm has a very powerful voice and that young girl from Georgia was good but not really a rocker (yet). The girl that did the Janis Joplin song was a little firecracker - she can really belt it out! :)

Not to be negative but I don't really picture a woman singer for this band, but you never know. :dunno:

MTHead 07-11-2006 04:03 PM

Song selection for tonight (I found it on another web site):

Magni – My Generation (The Who)
Jenny Galt – Tainted Love (Soft Cell)
Jill Giola – Violet (Hole)
Zayra Alvarez – You Really Got Me (The Kinks)
Chris Pierson – Take Me Out (Franz Ferdinand)
Dilana – Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash)
Josh Logan – With Arms Wide Open (Creed)
Phil Ritchie – If You Could Only See (Tonic)
Storm Large – Surrender (Cheap Trick)
Patrice Pike – Heart-Shaped Box (Nirvana)
Lukas Rossi – Don’t Panic (Coldplay)
Ryan Star – Jumpin’ Jack Flash (The Rolling Stones)
Dana Andrews – Born to Be Wild (Steppenwolf)
Toby Rand – Somebody Told Me (The Killers)

Given that they are looking for some hard rock singers, someone tell me why the Creed song, Tainted Love, and ANOTHER Coldplay?

mauvaisroux 07-11-2006 11:14 PM

Interesting show tonight! :D I think the non "rock" songs are to see what the contestants vocal abilities and ranges are and also to test their creativity.

My humble opinions . . . ;)

The 3 strongest performances:
Dilana (Ring of Fire), Lukas (Don't Panic) and Toby (Somebody Told Me). They all have had two great performances in a row. Dilana blew everyone out of the water with her performance! Lukas was a bit annoying last week but he does have the pipes and the stage presence. Toby has a great voice and a lot of charisma.

The 3 weakest performances:

Zayra (You Really Got Me), Chris (Take Me Out) and Jill (Violet). I think that Zayra is being tripped up by her accent and her lack of knowledge about the songs. I think she would be a better singer if she sang material that she was more familiar with or possibly a different type of music.

I find Chris lacks stage presence and his voice is the same all the time, he has no vocal range and personally I find his performances boring. Jill just killed that song this week and her Courtney Love impersonation was sad - Dave's comments were right on the money.

Not right for this venue:

Dana (Born to Be Wild), Jenny (Tainted Love), Josh (Arms Wide Open). Dana is just too sweet and although she has a nice voice it is not a rock voice. I felt like I was watching a country pop singer covering a rock tune. Jenny is also too sweet looking and sounding. She has a great voice but I felt like she should be singing Jewel cover tunes. I think that her version of Tainted Love was one of the worst I've heard outside of that rap song that uses it. Josh has a great voice but I don't think suits hard rock music. Maybe if they all step it up a notch next week they will stick around longer.

Showing improvement:
Phil, Magni, Ryan and Patrice all had better performances than last week.

What the heck happened?:
Storm (Surrender) I thought she came out of the gate as a strong contender last week but this song was so-so. Also her hair and makeup made me think of the Spice Girls for some reason.

Suzanne 3FC 07-11-2006 11:34 PM

I totally agree! Well, almost

I loved Lukas last week, but he wasn't as exciting tonight. Still love Dilana.

I think they were too hard in Jill. Sure, the copycat outfit didn't do anything for me, but I thought she sang it very well. Still, it lacked the power that she had last week when she covered Janis Joplin.

Storm was annoying. I can't stand the whole "wide eyed" face-making that is supposed to be what... wild? extreme? scary? shocking? It's just annoying. Fake and annoying.

My prediction right now-- Dilana, with Lukas coming in close. Anyone want to bet a twinkie?

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 12:04 AM

I think the problem was that Jill didn't take that song and make it her own. She tried to copy Courtney Love's vocals and personal style and only Courtney can get away with screaming out that song. Jill lacked originality this time and might end up paying the price for it.

It is too bad cause she rocked the place last week. :(

Guess we'll find out tomorrow! :D

squeaker 07-12-2006 07:29 AM

I was just amazed (and not in the good way) by last night's show. I am not sure I understand the band very well. They don't seem to vocalize what they want well. They said in the very beginning that this wouldn't be like any other project the band worked on, but kept asking people to sound just like what they used to sound like. I wonder *which* sound they are looking for. It isn't like anyone would ever confuse Master of Puppets with Girls Girls Girls.

I still love Josh, but can't see him winning. He really is an amazing singer.

I think the only 3 that have a real shot of winning may be Toby, Magni, and Dilana. I will admit I missed Lukas' song.

And I would put Phil in the bottom 3 again. I thought his cover of Tonic was awful!

jules1216 07-12-2006 08:04 AM

IMHO.....

I still don't like Magni or Jill or Zayra or Chris (and I love that song!!) There are a few others that I can see improving but these four didn't do it for me this week again and with such strong personalities I don't see them "thinking" they need to really change anything.

I really liked Jenny's Tainted love version--loved how it started slow and then went hard--loved the contrast. Dilana is the most mesmerizing performer there--loved the Johnny Cash song. She is definietly talented. Hubby came in and doesn't like this kind of show so I didn't see even all of Lukas.

I think the women are definitely stronger--but will the group pick a woman for the lead singer of their group?

MTHead 07-12-2006 08:15 AM

Here are my impressions:

Mangy - much improved from last week; far better stage presence. *Could* become a dark horse contender.

Jenny - I thought she would do better singing Natalie Merchant covers (rather than Jewel). I don't think she rocked it enough.

Jill - BAD courtney impersonation!

Zayra - another black unitard (or is it the same one?). She sings alright, but not for this band. I kind of liked her interpretation of the song - she cracked me up with her exchange with the judges, too. She is not long for the competition.

Chris - much better than "Roxanne"; not bad, not outstanding

Dilana - Mezmerizing! And the house band sounded so awesome!

Josh - I just don't like his style/voice and I hate the song. I find the head rosking thing really annoying.

Phil - another one with the twitching/swaying! I just don't think his voice is strong enough.

Storm - Great voice. I'd like to see her do something more current (Pinball Wizard and Surrender are both 70's - can we get with the new millenium?)

Patrice - she reminds me of Cheryl Crow and I didn't think she rocked Nirvana.

Lukas - I had a hard time hearing him sing at times, he seemed drown out by the music. He's not as great as he thinks he is.

Ryan - Not bad, but he seemed to be straining when he was "yelling" lyrics.

Dana - "Born to be Mild" summed it up nicely. I see her as the next Nashville Rocker, but not the frontman for Supernova.

Toby - hottie! A good, solid performance.

I am glad the judges were more critical last night, but I think some of their comments were weak and not especially helpful from a technical standpoint. What happened to the producer guy? He made the best comments/criticisms last week, I think.

My top three were Dilana, Toby and Storm;
My bottom three were Jill, Zayra and Josh.

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 06:58 PM

I agree, the comments weren't very constructive.

Any thoughts on who is going home tonight? I'm thinking it may be Zayra or Chris if they are in the bottom 3.

I hope Dilana gets the encore tonight - I would love to hear her version of Ring of Fire again. :)

Notice MTHead and I used the same exact word for Dilana while posting at almost the same exact moment--she almost pulls you into the TV and the crowd there is wild for her....

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 09:07 PM

I agree, Dilana is mesmerizing! :)

Ha! I knew Chris was going to get the boot tonight! I'm glad too! No harm to the guy and I hope he is successful in the future but I don't think I could have sat through another performance of his. There was just something about his voice I did not like.

I'm surprised that Zayra did the same song again but it was an improvement over last night's performance. Did you see her face when Jill was singing Bring Me to Life? She looked half jealous and half worried. Jill's version was way better than Zayra's version of that song last week.

I'm so glad that Jill redeemed herself after the "Violet" fiasco. I knew she could sing better than that!

On a fashion note - I loved the top that Brooke was wearing!

jules1216 07-12-2006 09:20 PM

Even Dave loved Brooke's top....

I agree that Jill did do the song better than Zayra, and Z did look worried--makes you wonder if Jill picked it so there would be the comparison???

I felt sorry for Chris but I have to agree with Mauvaisroux, I wish him no harm, but he just didn't do it for me. Actually all three are three of my bottom four.

We will have to see if Jill and Z redeem themselves next week.

mauvaisroux 07-12-2006 09:42 PM

ech! I hate Dave's cheesy comments about Brooke's outfits - it bugged me last season too. :p

jules1216 07-12-2006 09:50 PM

Makes you wonder what Carmen thinks.....

MTHead 07-13-2006 08:57 AM

I saw Zayra's face, too, during Jill's performance - it was priceless. I think the guys know they are not going to pick Z, but decided to keep her around b/c (1) she did a better job with the song the second time around, and (2) she is hot. Does she, or Jenny for that matter, really have a shot at this? Probably not, but Z is more entertaining than Chris. I missed Chris' performance last night, though, so I can't say he was the worst of the bunch.

jules1216 07-13-2006 11:17 AM

I don't think stage presence is something that can be learned--it can be improved but you have to have it in the first place-as much as I don't care for Z and Jill--they are more entertaining.

IMHO
my two top picks are Toby & Dilana
my bottom four were/are Jill, Z,Chris & Magni

I also like Jenny so far and am undecided on some of the others

mauvaisroux 07-13-2006 03:03 PM

I think that Zayra should go next if she doesn't get her act together.

I think the 2 biggest threats in this competition so far are Dilana and Toby. But that could change over the course of the next few weeks. ;)

Telly 07-13-2006 05:49 PM

I missed the elimination show - who got the encore?

I thought this weeks show wasn't as good as the first week. I soooooo wish Zayra would go - I can't even stand to watch her sing - UGH!

mom2cole 07-13-2006 10:55 PM

Toby got the encore and I to think Zayra should go she is NOT a rocker. Not sure what she is but she shouldn't be insulting the band members that are looking for a lead singer. Has anybody checked out www.rockstar.msn.com you can watch the reality episode that they don't air on tv online. Pretty cool.

mauvaisroux 07-17-2006 09:34 AM

I agree, Zayra is not a rock chick at all. I think if she sung in her own language she would have a beautiful voice. :)

Well tonight is mansion night so we will see what the fallout was from last week's booting of Chris.

Can't wait for tomorrow's episode! :cb:

mauvaisroux 07-18-2006 09:14 AM

Okay after watching last night's episode I can't stand Jill anymore. What a hissy fit she threw at Patrice during the song selections  and she just wouldn't let it go. And then it seemed that she was trying to get Zayra and Storm on her side and turn them against Patrice. :p

Sorry, but she was deliberating for so long over 4 songs that she wanted that I would have got fed up and taken the one I wanted even if she wanted it. Like people have all day to wait around to make up her mind, and it is not like it was her favorite or the only one she wanted. And her biting words to Patrice of "Maybe you're so passionate about that song because you NEED it!" Oh grow up!

I hope Patrice kicks butt with her song tonight!

Jill is now one of my least favorites. She comes across as bubbly and sweet but now we know what a nasty person she can be. Not only that but I didn't like her performance with the vocal coach. She has a tendency to try to stretch her voice but it just comes out as forced and kind of like screaming. That is why I disliked her performance of Violet (that and her copycat of Courtney Love).

Personally I can see Zayra going home this week if she hasn't improved from last week or possibly Lukas if he can't pull of his song arrangement this week. Though I would hate to see Lukas go so soon. I think he has some potential is he works on his attitude and uses the advice the vocal coach gave him.

Josh still does nothing for me though I don't dislike his signing - he just seems middle of the road and not a rocker.

My favorites are still Dilana and Toby- though I think Toby needs to get some better stage clothes since he looks the same all the time.

Why am I not surprised?

This is what happens when you play celebrity couple and flog yourself as a Hollywood it couple and then make a tv show out of your marriage. Just ask Nick and Jessica about it. Well, Dave did say he was checking out Brooke's website over the summer.

Still, it is sad to see someone's marriage breakup. :(

squeaker 07-18-2006 10:00 PM

I am still going with it is going to be either Toby, Magni, or Dilana to win.

Phil needs to go. now. well more like 2 weeks ago, but now will do.

mauvaisroux 07-18-2006 10:25 PM

My 2 cents :soap:

My two favorite performances on tonight's show were Dilana and Lukas. For me they are still the two who have a good mix of talent and stage presence. Dilana just seem to kick it every week so far. :cp:

Though I think Toby is good he was so-so this evening. He needs to bring more energy and some flash to his stage persona.

Magni is getting better and I enjoyed his performance this evening. He needs to vary his stage look too.

Ryan looks uncomfortable onstage and he seemed to not be able to sing the song -it was more like he was shouting the words. :p

Patrice, Jill and Storm did okay but just don't seem to be strong enough singers for rock music. I can't stand Storm's wide-eyed expressions anymore  She made me think of a singer in one of those dinner theatre shows you see at a casino.

Phil's stage presentation was better this week but he still isn't that strong a singer.

Zayra . . . my, my, my . . . Her vocals were better this week but I thought she was channelling Celine Dion. :cheese: and that dress :barf: Bring back the unitard!!!!!!

Josh is just boring , has limited vocal ability and he looks smug all the time which is starting to wear on my nerves.

Dana and Jenny can go home anytime now - they are both good singers but just don't suit rock music. For some reason Dana makes me think of a really young Wynona Judd or Shania Twain covering rock songs. Jenny should be singing in a folk festival or a coffee house somewhere.

This week's top 3 for me:
Dilana
Lukas
Magni

This week's bottom 3 for me:
Ryan - doesn't have "it"
Josh - vanilla
Jenny - not rock enough

MTHead 07-19-2006 08:25 AM

Here's what I thought:

Patrice - OK. DH and I thought something sounded off, maybe the arrangement? Not really sure, but I didn't think she sounded "rock" enough.

Josh - OK, I do not like his voice, and DH said last night, "he sounds like Kermit, or Pee Wee Herman," and I had to laugh. He sounds the same no matter what he sings. And I agree with Mauva, he does look smug all of the time.

Storm - I thought she sounded pretty good, but her facial expressions are kind of campy, maybe, almost like she is mocking the songs at times. She is in no danger of leaving soon, but I am starting to think she will be cut from the short list.

Lukas - this is the first time I liked his performance. I still think he is a d--k, but he sounded better than the last two weeks. And the eyeshadow was blue instead of pink, which looked much better.

Jill - better than last week's Courtney debacle. I thought it was a solid performance.

Ryan - his singing is just OK, but he lookes uber-uncomfortable up on the stage. Loosen up, or get snarly or something.

Phil & Dana - missed their performances. But I am assuming Dana was still better suited for Nashville Rock Star and not Supernova. She is a good singer, but she won't make it.

Toby - He sounded off last night. He's still hot and not going to be sent packing, but I was unimpressed.

Magny - Just keeps getting better and better. Reminds me of how I hated Suzy McNeil last time, but by the end I thought she was really pretty darm good. I think Mangy just established himself as the dark horse.

Zayra - Good voice, but she didn't look tortured or conflicted until the very end. Was she too old for AI? She really is a pop singer and sounded very Bjork-like on the song tonight. She hasn't a snowballs' chance in Florida of winning, and she might be sent packing tonight if she is in the bottom three again.

Jenny - I finally figured out who she reminds me of - the blond waitress Jolene from the last few years of "Alice". She was the worst and she really should go home tonight.

Dilana - Great job once again. DH said Zayra sounded like the Cranberries, and when I heard them introduce Dilana singing Zombie, I was kind of dreading 2 Cranberries in one night, but she did a faboo job as usual. She is great now, and I am hoping she doesn't become this season's Jordice, although there is no evidence of that happening thus far.

I think Jenny, Dana and possibly Josh will be bettom three, maybe Ryan instead of Josh. I think Jenny should be shown the door.

mauvaisroux 07-19-2006 01:02 PM

MTHead - your husband's comments are funny!

Josh seems to sing out of one side of his mouth.

Ryan looks terrified to be onstage.

Phil doesn't open his mouth enough when he sings.
