50 Shades of Grey...

Just finishing the 1st book. Have you read it? What did you think? A little dirty? Not that dirty? Too dirty?

I can't be the only woman that wants to talk about this book!!!!

ALG918 07-08-2012 01:47 AM

They were wonderful books, but honestly by the second book i wanted more of the story then the sex part, or i just didnt want it every other scene! i cant wait for the movies!!!

queenie91 07-08-2012 03:20 AM

My friend just bought me this book! I'm excited to start, she told me it was amazing.

CanadianCutie 07-08-2012 08:17 AM

I'm halfway through the third book. I've read dirtier/sexier, but it's a fun read.

EZMONEY 07-08-2012 08:28 AM

My wife loved the book...called it "mommy porn"

stillmeadow 07-08-2012 10:03 AM

I've read excerpts on the 'net, and wouldn't spend a dime on it.

It's not the subject matter that bothers me, it's the fact that it's so poorly written. The premise is ok, the plot could be better, but the diaglogue is indescribably terrible, abominable...

"My inner goddess is beside herself, hopping from foot to foot."

Oh brother! Doesn't that sound like an 8th grader wrote it?

There are a lot of good erotic novels out there, much better than this one.

I agree 100% "The apex of my thighs..." lol

I agree 1000%. They were TERRIBLE! So repetitive and poorly written. I had to stop after the 2nd book because I couldn't handle it any more. The sex scenes were actually boring after a while.

She really needed a better editor/publishing team.

Yeah, it's pretty bad when she can make a sex scene boring!!

I think the ed/pub needed a better writer - but since it's making so much money, I guess they're both happy....it's us readers who lost out.

oksoitsjen 07-08-2012 11:31 AM

I totally agree ladies. I am just now finishing the first book. For starters, it really isn't that dirty. I mean, he spanks her. Wooohoooo :-/ Her writing is a bit annoying at times. But, I don't despise it yet. My friends keep telling me that the 2nd book is better, and the 3rd is better than that...

Can you name a few? I'd be interested in reading them...

She was never an author, she started out writing fan fiction for Twilight (hence the week women and strong man that's untouchable) and based in Seattle. People liked her fan fiction so much she took it off the web and sold it.

au·thor/ˈôTHər/
Noun:
A writer of a book, article, or report.

I think that makes her an author. ;)

Just not a very good one. :D

ghost 07-08-2012 04:11 PM

Alright, dirty little secret. I was dating a pretty meh guy earlier this year. A friend suggested I read the books to help "put me in the mood." because I was not really all that aroused by the guy towards the end of the relationship. We ended up reading it out loud to each other and laughing hysterically. Did nothing for our sex life or relationship but gave us some seriously funny inside jokes that continue to this day even though we've moved on from our romantic relationship and are just friends now.

Titles? Authors? We need this info STAT! Lol!

d0lcevita 07-08-2012 06:08 PM

I'm reading the second one now, I'm more into learning about the story and the characters rather than the sex parts.

friaya 07-08-2012 06:24 PM

Hi, I've know 50 shades of Gray since it started as a fanfiction, Master of my Universe, to be honest I really love it as a fanfic but as a book...well, let's say the are better ones.
My favorite are the Dark Hunters series by Sherrelyn Kenyon, Lords of the Underground by Gena Showalter, The Brotherhood by J.R.Ward those are paranormal romance novels.

ChickieChicks 07-08-2012 06:27 PM

Lol it was so poorly written that I was barely able to finish the series...

It was novel at first, but when the author used the same one hundred words over and over, same adjectives, everything...it became painful, and not in a kinky way...ha ha!

LockItUp 07-08-2012 06:58 PM

I was so excited to read this. . .then I found an article on it and read some excerpts and there is no way now! The "inner goddess" and "laters baby" was enough for me to decide it's a NO!

oksoitsjen 07-08-2012 08:35 PM

I'll be honest, I like it so far. But I heard everyone talk about how it was "SOO DIRTY"...and it's just not. I'm not sure what I was expecting but that wasn't it. Idk, maybe the 2nd and 3rd books are "dirty"?

cherrypie 07-08-2012 09:08 PM

maybe some people's definition of dirty is different than yours

Agreed! Not dirty at all!

CanadianCutie 07-09-2012 08:20 AM

"Dirty" is subjective. I've read The Story of O, and 9 & 1/2 Weeks too (many years ago), and they weren't as dirty as everyone made them out to be either. Give me The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon any day. Sexy, naughty, funny, adventurous.

Apparently so. And I'm ok with that, I just wanted it to be really dirty. lol.

What is the Outlander series?? Should I be reading this??

Yes you should read them. SO much better than 50 shades of boring.

Laneyy 07-09-2012 10:38 AM

The question is, I've avoided reading them up until now. My mom has the ebooks on her iPad, so it's not like I have to pay for them.... but do I want to subject myself to this horribly written nonsense? I feel like I'm obligated, that I just HAVE TO KNOW.

Ugh. Decisions.

Do it. I mean, I don't think it is THATTTTT bad. and if you don't, you will always wonder =)

djs06 07-09-2012 11:11 AM

I haven't read it, I'm not really interested in paying for it... lol. I did, as a joke, ask for my mom to buy it for my (28th) birthday and she told me I wasn't allowed to read it.

ValRock 07-09-2012 11:44 AM

All I know is... I'm not eating pancakes at her house!!!

Too badly written to read seriously. Fun to glean for quotes so nasty they become hilarious!

YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH! Most poorly written book I've read in YEARS.

Was hoping to enjoy the spicy subject matter but could not get beyond the insipid dialogue.

EZMONEY 07-09-2012 12:39 PM

All these thoughts reinforce why I always use proper grammar when having sex ;)

Delta of Venus by Anais Nin is one of my favorites.

Poorly written books are distressing to read. They're like nails on a chalkboard; my red pen screams to bleed all over them. I peeked at some of the pages and couldn't abide 50 Shades of Grey.

Ravengirl 07-09-2012 02:13 PM

I agree with some of the views here and disagree quite a bit with some of the others... I was disappointed with the direction the books took after the initial basis which I found hot...Christian was smokin' hot initially and then was sort of tamed down to lukewarm in my opinion...(just for my own personal taste in fantasy...)

Now, that being said...I loved the play of dialogue between them very much, especially when they were playing with email...I thought it was lively, fun, and some of the best witty banter that I have read in awhile. I thought the use of her inner goddess was endearing.. It was a satisfying read as a romance novel...it just got my interest peaked that it was something else and then it changed the rules on me once it got me hooked. I like Masters to stay Masters and the author took a lovely Master and turned him into a Husband with no recognizable Master in him left.

You were asking for titles and authors! :-) Kitty Thomas blew my mind with Comfort Food, Tender Mercies, and my latest favorite The Last Girl...I would suggest you give them a look!!!

http://kittythomas.com/ You can download her books off Amazon as well..

I read all 3 books and I have to say, I didn't think anyone could top the horrible writings of John Norman's "Gor" series (which is over 26 books long now) and only do it in THREE books, but there it is - selling like hot cakes.

I did think the inner goddess thing was kind of cute, for the first 5 times it was mentioned and then after that I was rolling my eyes.

I hated the geographical impossibilities that seemed rampant.

I especially hated the portrayal of a mouse of a girl with very little actually interesting about her, being found attractive and sought after by one of the hottest billionaire bachelors around who definitely seems like he has some interesting sides to him. I don't mind unrealism, but this was too Ugly Duckling for me. Almost as bad as "Bared to you" by Sylvia Day with all the beautiful, perfect, modelesque people walking around all over the place.

As far as I was concerned, the books were not about D/s at all and more about Christian's mommy issues and the evolution of him from that to doting husband. I didn't find him to represent, to me, a Dominant but more of a spoiled rotten child with a very fragile ego and when I meet men like that, I certainly don't tear my hair out wondering if I should stay with them, or moping and crying about it when we break up, I usually run very fast in the other direction, as far from them as I can.

Oh - and there's never any reason to be so excited about frozen peas that you need to put an exclamation mark beside it when the character has found them in the freezer. They're just peas.

I've heard this before, which is strange to me. I"ve heard that there isn't even a mommy in it the books till the very end?? So, why mommy porn? Just seemed odd when I heard people calling it that.

I think it's because of the demographic that reads it. Apparently it's HUGE with middle age women who are usually moms. So it's porn for mothers.

Nearly all my female friends are going nutso over it and they are all mothers.

SoCalCowgirl 07-10-2012 11:09 AM

i'm reading the first book now, I don't want to read the comments for any spoilers but I'm currently 80 pages into the book. And as of right now my opinion is that it's just an Ok read. I'm kind of annoyed how Grey seems to treat Ana as if she were a child. I haven't gotten to any of the sex scenes, so I'll be interested to see how the writer playes them out, I read a lot of romance novels so I've read quite a lot of them :) I hope the book gets better, I'm determined to get at least half way through the book, i'm not sure if I'll remain interested in it though because it's I normally don't read these types of main characters. I also hope that we get into Grey's mind at some point in the book and not just Ana's.

oksoitsjen 07-10-2012 12:22 PM

Wasn't Anais Nin outlawed in some countries? They have one of her books in a glass case at my used bookstore for $150.00! I think I will look into those. I have never heard of Kitty Thomas but I will be looking into her as well!

And I don't get the whole "mommy porn" thing. It makes me think that there are a whole bunch of mommies not getting what they need! I could be wrong, but why else would they be sooooo crazy about it??

fatbookworm 07-10-2012 12:34 PM

Put me in the "think it's badly written" camp. Plus, well...how do I say this nicely: I don't think the BDSM is very realistically portrayed. I won't say how I know (:o) but I just don't think that the book is the best introduction the wider world could have to how things are done in this subculture. It's a bit of fluff, sure, but couldn't a girl wish for something less silly and more realistic? *shrugs* But as long as women are enjoying their sexuality, and maybe even trying new things, the effect of 50 shades isn't that bad!

I agree, I don't want to boast but I am pretty darn satisfied in that department so I don't need a book to help me!
