I'm still laughing about it-----

I was having dinner at Mom's once and her last husband had made mashed potatoes with rutabagas in them. He didn't share this tidbit with anyone before we ate it. I put in a mouthful of mashies and could feel these hard slimy chunks in it. Couldn't just spit it out right there, so I actually had to swallow it.:barf: I about died.
On a visit about 6 months later, he made us grilled chicken. Ever eat chicken that has been cooked with high heat and short time? It was burnt skin on raw meat. My X can eat shoe leather if it comes off a grill and is free, but, even he swore to never eat anything served to him by that man again. I'm not real sure what Mom saw in this guy, but it sho' weren't his cooking. |
.... can eat shoe leather if it comes off a grill and is free .... LOL!
Somehow this reminds me of the cafeteria at work ... but it's not free. Morning everyone! |
Susan! You leave tomorrow. We need to get it in gear to hit 500 for you.
|
Good Mornin' All!!
Yes we need to speed post, get as many posts done today... We Can Do It!!!! |
Sorry... I got nothin!
I have a meeting today regarding the restructuring at work. No fear of losing my job, but a little tense on what this means.... |
Ugh, I hate meetings where you go in with a twisty tummy, not knowing what is going on. Atleast you know you are safe job-wise.

Karen: Thanks for the laugh!! Loved that video! "Is this real life?":rofl::rofl:
Greetings Goddess Operator!! I remember the days of no internet...how did we do it? I still don't have cable tv. People ask me if I still have a rotary phone. I was finally going to get cable when the economic situation happened and I just can't do it right now. Probably is a good thing...love watching TV. Topic: weird dishes My mother used to invent dinners to feed six children. She would make mashed potatoes and cut up a package of hot dogs. She would layer the potatoes and hot dogs and then bake it. We loved it. I tried it with my kids and they loved it. I altered it a little and put some cheddar cheese on top. Weird! |
My mother used to try "gourmet" el-cheapo suppers.
She had one horrible thing she made: wieners split and stuffed with cheese, wrapped in bacon secured with toothpicks, browned a bit and simmered in tomato sauce. That was on a par with her lovely roast Prem (Spam) which was scored, studded with cloves, glazed with maple syrup and baked. I vowed never to do that to my kids although I did go through some poor years. There were a few times when I would chill the leftover morning oatmeal, slice it, dip it in egg and fry it for dinner with maple syrup. We used to get free maple syrup which probably got me started on my weight problem. The gallon jugs were too heavy for my sister and I to lift so we took straws and sipped away, not leaving any stickiness to show we'd been sneaking glugs of syrup. I still give my sister maple syrup and a box of straws on her birthday. |
Tang
Quote:
You remind me that my MIL went through a Tang phase. Every dish had a few teaspoons of Tang added to "make it interesting." I began to tremble a full week before planned visits. |

I can't remember any bizzarre off the wall dishes, just frugal ones like english muffin pizzas, hot dogs with mac & cheese or hot dogs with baked beans... hmmm, I'll have to ask mom what she made, because I seriously can't think of anything that'd make me blech right now. I am a pretty straight forward cook, so my kiddies haven't had any weird concoctions to swallow and smile for me. |
Bill--- seriously Tang in stuff... like Tang in the spaghetti sauce or a splash of tang powder with the meatloaf? Come on share some yucky recipes with us. I am curious.

This is scary, DH actually LIKED the scalloped potatoes with corn flakes on them.
Poutine? I doubt I could eat that! My Mom (at my Dad's request) would take a perfectly good leftover beef roast and grind it up with cooked and mashed potatoes. The resulting "hash" was a tasteless mound of gray stuff that required copious amounts of ketchup in order to force it down. We preferred it when she shaved the remaining roast and drenched it in her own bar-be-que sauce and served it open face on English muffins (she made a mean--and hot--BBQ sauce). Oh, and Spam was banned from our house. Dad had way too much of it while in the Marines. The video made me think back when DD got her wisdom teeth out. Prior to leaving for the oral surgeon she was prescribed a single Xanax to take to relax her. Well that on an empty stomach led to an interesting conversation in the car. At one point I commented that she was "feeling no pain." At that point she pinched herself and said, "no, I still fee pain." |
