Just WOW - the Phillies pulled that one out of their hats, per the web writeup:
Quote:
Ruiz followed with a nubber down the line and third baseman Evan Longoria charged. He dived for the ball, and rushed an underhanded flip home that sailed over Navarro's head.
Unbelievable.
Congrats for staying up to watch that finish, Gary, but that was 1:47 am here on the East Coast.
You West Coast people can probably read the name Ruiz without thinking of Rosie Ruiz who "won" the women's medal in the Boston Marathon in 1980 before careful review of the tapes near the finish line several days later showed that she hadn't actually run the race and her victory was rescinded (but the medal not returned).
And, I had to go to the Urban Dictionary for:
Quote:
3. Nubber
Nubber is actually older than any of these previous definitions. It was invented in Belper, Derbyshire, UK sometime in the 1980's, possibly the late 1970's.
It is used to describe a particular person who has done something a bit dodgy, like nicking a fag end from an ashtray or just being generally trampy.
It's not as specific as Pikey, but has similar connotations.
The ball did sail on that "nubber" but I don't think a perfect throw would have made a difference. It was a though play with babses loaded and 0 outs.
Being associated with running here, our son is the new boys head track coach at the high school he teaches at, we know of Rosie. One of my bil's and I call Angie "Rosie" during some of our 5K's....she has won 2 medals going the wrong way! Of course she went the way the kids on the course directed her....and she was not alone....but still...a Rosie in my book....wink
WOW is right, what a game... Actually the series so far has been better than I expected.. BILL you were awake ? I'm impressed
I remember Rosie Ruiz, that was such a big scandal at that time... I loved the 'Marathon' I worked on Comm Ave for years and got the day off with pay !!!
GARY... You sure pack a lot into your evenings...
WEBROVER... Good luck tonight, tie it up !!

edit ~ not to be bashing here...but I felt the Star Spangled Banner by Patti Labelle was WAY over the top....to me...and only me talking here (Angie too)...it was ALL about her...not the glory for what the song is about.
............ GARY... You sure pack a lot into your evenings..
It sure sounds like it doesn't it. Not really though, our guests came for dinner at 5:30, stayed until around 8:30, gave me time to catch a lot of the rain delayed game...we did have it on downstairs and would check the score from time to time
...then after they left I watched the baseball game on TV while I watched my TROJANS....who were not on TV here...on the computer....aww...technology!
Sure like the way John Oates sang the Star Spangled Banner tonight!
