Online Pet Peeves

I thought it would be funny to list some of our pet peeves!

Here are a few of mine listed below.

When people use "ect" instead of "etc." when they mean "etcetera".

When people use "loose" when they mean "lose", as in "I want to lose weight.", not "This shirt is really loose!".

Fess up! What are some of yours?

StillTryin 09-14-2007 02:22 PM

bad grammar and blatant misspellings. I mean it is one thing to type slower than your brain can think, but to have consistant errors....like "the" being "hte"...stupid little things I know..lol

And sadly we are all guilty of most of this stuff...

Spinymouse 09-14-2007 03:07 PM

1. TIN foil. I sometimes carry copies of the periodic table of the elements to hand out when people say this.

2. Baby talk.

So, please do not say you have a "nummy veggie sammie wrapped in tin foil" to give me. I might blow up.

StillTryin 09-14-2007 03:15 PM

Spiney, that is TOOOOO FUNNY!!!!!!

kappy 09-14-2007 03:17 PM

mine isn't so much on-line as just a general pet peeve. Axed. As in "I axed him that question!" You did what? Should I call the police or the paramedics or both?

On-line it would be more along the lines of "no" instead of know, "there" instead of they're or their. Although "loose" vs. lose is definitely a biggie!

Spinymouse 09-14-2007 03:35 PM

oops
missed the "online" qualifier!

modkittn 09-14-2007 03:36 PM

I think everyone should learn the difference between "lay" and "lie" !

NotTheCheat 09-14-2007 03:46 PM

"u" and "ur"

I really love the fact that Firefox checks spelling in the browser. I really wish IE did this (for when I am at work).

4myloves 09-14-2007 03:47 PM

People who start threads on topics that have been beaten to death rather than using the "SEARCH" feature.

4myloves 09-14-2007 03:49 PM

Oh, and people who hijack threads.

4myloves 09-14-2007 03:50 PM

And how about--

people who type reply after reply after reply instead of editing their original post to add all of their extra thoughts

Puncezilla 09-14-2007 03:55 PM

PROLLY, I think probably is probably what they mean, I'm not sure why it bothers me so much. I know my spelling and grammer is far from perfect.

Also i instead of I. We all have typos but some people don't even try.

i thought i was prolly the only one bothered by silly little things like this:D.

Spinymouse 09-14-2007 04:06 PM

i instead of I --
i or I have become much more tolerant about that and also guilty of it - after getting an iPhone (how iRonic!) and sending messages on its little keypad function.

walking2lose 09-14-2007 04:24 PM

Hmm... yes, the lose/loose is ubiquitous on this site. I type quickly and very lazily, so I know my writing is not the best, but I agree that some of the spelling and grammar is atrocious.

And quite a few people seem to think 'alot' is one word. It's not. We would never write "I ate alittle ice cream," yet people consistently use "alot" when it should be 'a lot." A little. A lot. I didn't realize it, but I guess that would have to be my pet peeve.

alinnell 09-14-2007 04:26 PM

Trolls.

We don't have many, if any, here on 3FC, but recently on another forum I belong to, a lot of us got suckered in by a Troll. She duped us, made us feel more than stupid (although naive is probably a better word for it). In the end, she got banned from the site.

Other than that, the use of incorrect grammar and some certain misspelled words does bother me (most of what has already been stated).

Oh, and Cheryl, too funny!!!

You had me worried there for a moment, then I double checked, and found that there were no recent unlocked threads on this topic currently. ;)

I tend to get annoyed by the person who psycho analyzes every single thing. Come on now.....I ate the d@#$ candy bar because I was feeling weak...not because my mother took my bottle away too early.

SoulBliss 09-14-2007 04:48 PM

 I know that I eat candy (or French fires or any other high fat and calorie food) because it tastes good and I like it, not because of some heavy, underlying tragedy that occurred when I was an infant.

NightengaleShane 09-14-2007 04:49 PM

People who use intentionally bad grammar bother me. People who use unintentionally bad grammar bother me, too. So do misspellings of easy words and those who use "your" instead of "you're" People who are too lazy to capitalize slightly grind my nerves (though moreso if they ALSO forget punctuation) and those who use commas instead of periods make me not want to even read their posts!

Trolls tick me off, too, but they're rarely on this site! :D

On a non-grammar-related note, people who only post negative things also annoy me immensely.

lizziness 09-14-2007 04:49 PM

I hate to say it - but whiners bug me. People who make multiple posts contstantly to give us an update of their personal life... also known as trolls perhaps? I mean, people have a hard time, and we're here for support and I want to help support people as much as anybody else ... but sometimes I run out of it, and patience. I guess I'm mean.

Lizziness~what I understand about this, it is the website that does this when the poster won't turn off the cap lock! But, I have to tell you, my DH does this when he writes! It is so hard to figure out what he's really meaning to capitalize!

The first instance occurs (on this site, anyway) when people use their "caps lock" for an entire thread. Actually, that brings up another pet peeve of mine--people who feel the need to CONSTANTLY SHOUT AT ME THROUGH THEIR TYPING BY CAPITALIZING EVERY-SINGLE-WORD.

And, no, it's not mean to skip those threads--I do, too! (Well, I guess it could be mean, but at least we're in good company :) )

kaplods 09-14-2007 05:13 PM

I used to get really annoyed by mispellings and horrible grammar. But then fibromyalgia hit my brain as well as my body, and now I literally have times when I lose my spelling ability. I find myself spelling words phonetically, even very simple ones. I'm constantly mixing up they're and their, and to, too, and two, which I haven't done since fifth grade. And one hand sometimes now gets ahead of the other when typing (thus words like hte), and you know I try to reread my post before submitting, but a lot of the time it seems I only catch it after it's out there for all the world to see.

I still feel that twinge of annoyance when I see those mistakes like loose instead of lose, and all the others mentioned, but now that the shoe is on the other foot sometimes, I'm a little more generous.

kaw 09-14-2007 05:14 PM

"i thought i was prolly the only one bothered by silly little things like this"

u r so losen up or loose the attitud. :) (Just kidding, of course.)

I don't see it much on these boards, but "data is" drives me nuts. "Data" is plural for datum, so it should be "data are."

Adding an apostrophe before the s in a plural noun (e.g., "car's for sale") also makes me cringe.

I don't even bother to read posts in which every word is capitalized or none are.

A lot of things, really. :)

NewDay4MeToo 09-14-2007 05:17 PM

This is not so much as an online thing, as a dieting community thing. I get really annoyed by some certain catch phrases that get used again and again. There is really nothing wrong with them... I don't know why it gets to me. So, here goes... "I'm going to do this to kickstart my weight loss," "I gained x pounds in 2 days, but I suspect most of it is water weight," "I have stayed the same weight for three days, I have hit a plateau..."

I have probably said all of those things, so I don't want to be overly critical. But some of the phrases that I read again and again bug me.

SoulBliss 09-14-2007 05:20 PM

Newday, I also have a "catch phrase" that irritates me! I abhor it when people say that they "binged" when they only ate a few hundred calories extra beyond what they planned.

freiamaya 09-14-2007 05:21 PM

Starting a thread and getting NO RESPONSES!!!
Getting NO RESPONSES to a post to a thread - like noone reads them, they just read the first post and then flip to the end to respond! Thereby missing all the good and relevant responses in between!
(I don't expect a response to this post :) )

SoulBliss 09-14-2007 05:28 PM

Freiamaya, getting no response to something I have replied to directly happens to me ALL the time (it's even happened already in this thread  ). I think I must be invisible sometimes! :o

nicolen 09-14-2007 05:30 PM

*responds to freiamaya* ;)

That can get annoying. I've said before in the 100 lb club that I should be called the official thread killer because the number of times I'm the last person to respond to a thread before it dies is phenomenal.

Grammar is a big one. I can ignore misspellings, although if I'm in a grumpy mood they do annoy me. What I can't ignore are people that do not capitalise proper nouns or the first word of a sentence and then type everything they have to say in one paragraph. I am probably not going to read that post as it's too much effort.

Those people who think that theirs is the only way or opinion is the only one that counts and shout down anyone who has something to say that's even remotely different from their point of view. Thankfully, we don't seem to see too much of this here - everyone seems to respect each other's point of view and while there are disagreements, everyone's polite about it.

Trolls that come just to cause chaos. Something we don't seem to have too many of here.

EZMONEY 09-14-2007 07:32 PM

OMGoodness I must just drive you gals freakin' CRAZY

SoulBliss 09-14-2007 08:25 PM

^^No, not at all! Once I started to "get" your sense of humor, I began to find you quite endearing. :)

GatorgalstuckinGA 09-14-2007 08:30 PM

the all caps..screeming is definately a biggie of mine...

also people who feel the need to type in a god awful darn near impossible color to read on a white screen...it makes my eyes hurt.

and then for this site..people who ask for advice but then get defensive and upset when you give them legitimate, non critical advice???? trust me i'm hear to help but please don't get mad at me for my opinion.

Azure 09-14-2007 08:40 PM

I'm a grammar freak, so I've found that a few things tend to bug me on forums:

-- No capitalization or punctuation in sentences (or both of these things in wrong places)

-- When people misuse homonyms (to, too and two / their, there and they're / site, sight, etc.)

-- When people abbreviate common words (u instead of you / ur instead of you are / y instead of why, etc.)

Those are my big ones. :) Then again, I'm an English major...so it makes sense that it bugs me. I'm not completely perfect in all of those categories, but I do my best to be!

GatorgalstuckinGA 09-14-2007 08:43 PM

lol at azure. all my......'s must annoy you then.

WinterStarzz 09-14-2007 08:54 PM

I have to go along with the grammar people. It truly drives me insane. I have become an editor to just about everyone I know, because apparently I am the only one who knows what a comma is. Holding shift while typing "i" isn't hard. Your does not equal you're. U will never be you. Periods are good for you. They help readers not go insane when they attempt reading your run-on sentences. A lot of people spell a lot incorrectly. TyPiNg Lyk DiS means you need to go far, far away from me for your own health. If you want to axe me something, don't be surprised if I start running, because I don't want to die. Iraq has nothing to do with racks, and Iran isn't a place you run to...if you are going to talk about it, know how to.

We all have a typo every now and then, it's not a crime. But if you catch it before you post, they made the delete button for a reason...it's not just a decoration. Beautiful though it may be.

I feel better now. :)

feelingroovy 09-14-2007 09:01 PM

Ahhh, I can relate to so many of these peeves. What bothers me are the people who have numerous misspellings and even improper grammar and don't bother to do a simple spell check in another program, such as Microsoft Word or their mail program that has spell check. What's so hard about that? It takes only a few more seconds out of your time. You then simply copy and paste and there you have it! Now you don't look uneducated!

Your vs. you're is a biggie for me and everything azure said. Who vs. whom. Lose vs. loose is also a biggie, especially on this site because we're talking about losing weight! What's up with saying pregnate when you mean pregnant? WTF?

phantastica 09-14-2007 09:33 PM

My pet peeve isn't really found in an online forum, but more of an email phenomenon. I dislike it when someone asks for my email address (thinking they actually intend to use it to communicate), and they start sending me random email forwards about angels, or predictions that only come true if I forward to half of my graduating class, or various other forms of internet lore. I usually reply to these emails with a link to an urban-legends page that debunks it.

Another pet peeve is when someone uses the TO: or CC: field instead of the BCC: field when sending out emails to a large group.

Oh! Another pet peeve: when people quote someone else's words and don't cite a source (even if it's just '--author unknown').

WaterRat 09-14-2007 09:42 PM

Gosh, you've hit just about all of mine! :) I especially hate it when a whole post is one long paragraph - my eyes just can't track after 4 or 5 sentences.

jillybean720 09-14-2007 09:42 PM

I've worked as a technical editor, so I tend to be kind of harsh about grammar and spelling errors (although I do understand the occasional typo, as even I am guilty of that when typing quickly).

Something I get bugged by a lot at work is that people tend to not understand the difference between "personal" and "personnel."

Also, people seem to think every plural acronym requires an apostrophe before the s. It doesn't. It actually rarely does.

Another one that is work related for me: I recently reviewed two candidate resumes where all numbers were spelled out. Only numbers up to ten should be spelled out; seeing "processed sixty thousand applications" or "performed fifteen hundred actions" just makes me wonder why you would want to do all that extra typing.

In addition to the "loose/lose" issue, I roll my eyes when I see people use "weight" instead of "weigh." I do not "weight" myself on the scale. I did not "weight" more today than yesterday. Oh, and no one EVER "weighted" any amount of pounds, nor did they "weighted" themselves earlier today!

Sandwich. It's one of the simplest words to spell, yet people seem to resort to baby talk ("sammich") or add extra letters ("sandwhich," "sandwitch"), making the word more complicated than it really is.

I've also encountered some people (moreso in real life, not online) who call any long sentence a run-on sentence. It's just incorrect. I could probably write a 100-word sentence and have it be grammatically correct. It would be long, but just because it's long does not make it a run-on. A run-on occurs when appropriate punctuation is missing, not simply due to high word count.

A HUGE peeve for me on these boards is people who respond to a thread without having read all the other responses in the thread. They often repeat the same things that have already been said, or they ask questions that have already been answered. I've repeated information in a thread before, but I always do so by including a simple phrase like, "as someone mentioned earlier..."

I'll stop now :^:
