My pet peeves include: 1) The ticker on the morning news having misspelled words and incorrect grammar and 2) Misspelled words on work trucks, billboards and in any advertising in general.
<I hope I used proper spelling and grammer on my post. After reading all 6 pages of peeves...I'm petrified!> |
oh oh! My pet just peeved on the floor!

Battle Ax(e), I am aware that many of the instances I cited have become acceptable through common misuse; however, that doesn't make me any more comfortable with them. Just as 'alright' has become a word and 'judgement' has become an acceptable spelling (both of which drive me berserk), they are just mistakes that have been made so frequently that there's no fighting it anymore. By way of explanation, I was reared by two newspaper journalists, both of whom performed editing tasks during the course of their careers, and prohibition of these sloppy usages was driven into my psyche like a stake though a vampire's heart. That they have become acceptable because so many people didn't know better makes them no more agreeable to me. I liken it to someone chewing on a rubber band. No harm done, but it still makes my teeth itch. The original question was, "What are your pet peeves?" and not, "What are your pet peeves that are now unreasonable because they have become acceptable?" I answered the question. Gaaahhhh, yes, K8-EEEE!!! The ubiquitous apostrophe!!!! I've been known to strike through them on menus with a red felt tip pen, like a wizened old school marm with nothing else to do on a Saturday night. :o Alinnell, oh my, yes, "irregardless" is a travesty... it makes me foam at the mouth... quietly, of course. ;) (And it's lovely to see you still here, btw!!) My current favorite tongue-biter: Why is D-E-F-I-N-I-T-E-L-Y the most misspelled word in the English language?? GeorgiePorgie, I wouldn't worry overmuch... language has gotten so sloppy and spelling, punctuation and grammar so poor that only we obsessive-compulsive types are bothered. In the total scheme of things, I equate it with a little tickle in my throat: Annoying, but not life-threatening. ;) This is a fun thread, but in the Real World, no one especially cares. Rae |
This is not an online error, but our local smalltown newspaper evidently doesn't use spellcheck. There are so many errors, spelling and otherwise, that it drives me crazy. There was actually a letter sent in by a local grade school student complaining to the editors about it. After the tsunami several years ago our local TV station ran a graphic displaying what the wave actually looked like and the title displayed under it said "Title wave". I could not believe that they didn't catch it before the broadcast.
I am in awe of people who are grammar experts. I know I probably overuse commas because I'm paranoid about it. Spelling is more my forte. I can spot a misspelled word a mile away. I have seen misspelled words on many websites including professional ones such as medical ones. Sure hope I didn't misspell any words in this post! |
hehehe - definitely .. there's a girl in my office who uses the spell checker and changes it to defiantly every time.
Also we once got into an argument because she insisted it was illegal to co-sign a car... and I kept asking, are you sure you're not trying to say sell the car on consignment? but she was adamant. And yet- there are so many car loans with co-signers... Hrmm ... she was so damn sure she was right I just gave up. |
I guess I'm a masochist, because misspellings and blatant grammatical errors drive me a little crazy but I became a high school English teacher anyway, so I have to see tons of them every day!! But I guess I'm trying to do my part to correct them!
I haven't read this whole thread yet, so I don't know if this one has been mentioned, but the its/it's thing drives me a little batty. That, and using an apostrophe in a plural word. I'd rather hear nails on a chalkboard than see a sign that reads "Kitten's for Sale." I once called a business to tell them to change their sign because it read "Photography At It's Finest." They actually changed it, and there's a slight space left where the apostrophe used to be. I feel a little glimmer of pride when I see that space... |
Nicolen and Soulbliss - thank you SO much for responding!!! I feel great! I too suffer from the "post-killer" syndrome and have fears of invisibility, especially after I post what I think is a well-thought-out response. Thanks again :)
Grammar seems to be the issue of the day -- I to want to lose weight -- its only fare after Im working hard. R U all agreeing with me? :) |

Oooh, one more...people should spell Santa's name correctly. There should be a CLAUSE somewhere that everybody advertising anything to do with him knows to spell it Santa CLAUS. :D But it probably bugs me more than it bugs him. ;) :p Ellie |
freiamaya, Nicolen and Soulbliss- I just thought I would mention that I have those thread killer fears, too. I feel insecure sometimes on this great big site. It feels like I can move around, answer questions, respond to threads, and no one knows whether I'm here or not. Nice to know I'm not the only one!
|
Ooh, I'm glad someone brought up phrases. I'd just like to say it should always be "once IN a while," not "once AND a while." The latter makes NO sense. It drives me insane particularly because there is a popular song out on the radio right now that actually says the phrase with the "and." I love the song, but that one part always makes me cringe!
|
Oh dear ... this thread frightens me ... my grammar has gone to heck-in-a-hand-basket over the years ... and I use waaaay to many ellipses and things that indicate that I have no idea what the proper structure should have been.
Spelling bothers me. The backspace button is right there. Conversationally casual grammar does not bother me. I agree with whoever said that solid block posting is difficult to read. If you (like me) have no idea how to make a paragraph, just leave a few spaces. |
Well I don't know if anyone has said this because I sheepishly admit I haven't taken the time to read all 7 pages of this thread (is that anyone's pet peeve?).
Certainly what drives me most insane is the confusion between "lose" and "loose." They are 2 totally different words, one is even a verb and one's an adjective! I constantly see the phrase "I'm not loosing any weight!" or something like that and I have to cringe! :D |
How about "roll model"?
|
Wow... It feels good to have some kindreds here. I feel like I am being uncorked. Forgive me in advance:
It's become common, but I am not "on" a diet. Nor am I "on" a medication. I'd trip on the bottle. I take my medications ( not meds). "Try and..." as in "Try and see me.." shouldn't it be "Try to see me." since the person has to put for the effort and the outcome isn't guaranteed? I've heard people use the phrase "As it were" what the heck does that mean? Some of the diet speak- To be on plan, rather than on the plan' Made it to goal, rather than to my or the goal. "I'm talking marriage." No, you're not. You're talking about marriage. When someone replies nastily to a post. It's one thing to use constructive critisism, but I've read posts ( about peeves, actually) where the poster was attacked for not being respectful to other people's differences. This one isn't really an online thing, but when people say stuff like ," I was talkin' with him one day, and then we were goin' to the store for some food I'm gonna be cookin'..." were the 'g' is no where to be found on 'ing' words! It's one thing at home, but not in a professional environment! I wouldn't trust someoene who said they were performin' surgery. typos are typos..they happen and not everyone is as educated as others when it comes to these things. I think we can agree that there is a lot of stuff that we can let slide, but then there are those glaring errors. Ok..I'm done for now... |
Optical Goddess -YES! "Try and" instead of "Try to" bothers me, as does "as it were."
And I also have to try hard not to laugh when I hear: flamingo music or flamingo dancing (instead of flamenco.) Regarding how language changes: I once heard that you can roughly tell what generation someone is in by the way they describe graduation. The generation before mine: "I was graduated from high school in ----." My generation: "I graduated from high school in ----." The generation after mine: "I graduated high school in ----." Wow; they actually graduated the school rather than the other way around! |

I have seen "roll model" on this forum
|
I have another one - it bugs me more in conversation than online and I'm sure there is nothing wrong with it other than it annoys me
"... and whatnot" what does that even mean and why didn't spell catcher catch that what and not are two different words? also... i am totally guilty of the ellipses...:D |
NewDay4Me, I notice you (I love your smile and what it says above your avatar) and what you have to say! ;) I guess there are a lot of us here who feel tiny or not "part of the crowd" much of the time. We're not alone! Freiamaya, Nicolen and the two of us spoke up about it so there must be at least a HUNDRED others, right?
Here's another peeve of mine: When people say "anyways". Don't they mean "anyway"? It's a silly thing to say either way, isn't it? |
Diet online specific: I hate the terms Wonderland and Twoterville

Oh. Oh. Oh!!! Here's another common misusage that drives me round the bend: When people use the contraction, "there's," when what they mean is "there're." Example: "There's pears in the fridge." Like nails on a chalkboard to me.
And the last one (<cough> for today <cough>), I promise: People who say "went," when they mean "gone," as in, "I'd went to the store, where there's toys for sale." Horrible!! Rae |
This one's kind of mean, but since we're on the topic:
People don't 'go', they say, exclaim, remark, opine.. "She went, " Oh my God! Look at the toys!" It's along the same lines as " And then she's all, "Get away!" and he's all "no, it's my couch!"....(sigh). |
Soulbliss- Thanks for your response!
|
You are not "invisible" to me CHRISTINE....
oops! are "......" quotations around words all right? getting confused.... |
Not intending to hijack the thread or sound curmudgeonly, but I was reading an article and I realized one of the most irritating verbal things to me:
I loathe the term "preggers". |
I also loathe the term "preggers" and "prolly" and all the others that have been mentioned!
|
I wonder if the "goes" instead of "says" comes from how children are taught their animal noises. As in "the cow goes moo."
I probably didn't punctuate that correctly. But "goes" and "I'm all" used to mean "said" both annoy me also. |
I have to say that some of the words that have been mentioned are said IRL in fun. My name is in fun. Feelin' Groovy, taken from the 59th Street Bridge Song by Simon and Garfunkel, is an example. Or a rock singer shouting "Are ya'll feelin' all right tonight???" This doesn't make me cringe!! It's self expression! "A cow goes moo" doesn't annoy me. It's all in fun when you're playing with your child. Eventually, they'll learn the proper usage. So what if it's not grammatically correct? We're talking to babies here and having a good time!
Language doesn't always have to be formal. There's no law that says you can't slack if you feel like it. A lot of it is cultural. It is how people have been raised to speak, even though it is incorrect, it is their upbringing and they don't know any better. Blame it on our educational system for lack of caring. When you're talking and joking with friends, slang is thrown into the mix to add personality or to get a point across. If it's wrong, everyone knows it. Sometimes it's just fun to say it. In this case (online), sometimes it's just fun to type it. It doesn't annoy me because I see a personality shining through that gives me a better idea of who that person is in the way they express themselves. What annoys me are the blatant spelling and grammatical errors, more than the "way" people express themselves. If we all went by the book, we'd be pretty darn boring. Oh, and I'm sure there are some errors in my post as well but I'm not going to worry about it. lol The quote in my siggy is incorrect but it's what Chalene said. Doesn't make her stupid. It's how she wanted to say it! |
feelingroovy, I think we all accept that some things are acceptable at some times, even though technically incorrect (like "feelin" ;) ). From the posts I've read here (and I think I've actually read them all!), people usually explain that it's inappropriate in a professional environment or in formal publications and such. No one's said anyone is downright stupid for using or doing any of these things. I'm sure there are things that even get on your nerves that other people find perfectly acceptable :^:
And I'll add another vote for "preggers." It's not even short for anything--it's the same number of syllables and letters as just saying or writing the entire word "pregnant." |
jilly-I also dislike "prego" when people refer to pregnancy. I never used that, or preggers...
*sigh* |
Quote:
|
Jillybean - I was thinking the exact same thing before reading your post. Prego, Preggers...how about we just say pregnant?
|
Yeah, "preggers" and "prego" seem to strip pregnancy of its dignity, don't they?
I cringe as I type this one I hate it so bad: hearing people say she "squirted out more kids" -- GROSS. |
Along the same lines, "Popping" out more kids.
The word 'pop' has been grating to me as of late, we pop in to stores, pop things in our mouths, pay for things by the pop,....it's like nuking things in the microwave. There's nothing nuclear about it ( that I know of.)... and lastly, alcoholics have a problem with alcohol. Shopaholics? Carbaholics? What's carbohol and shopohol? |

New one to add to the list: people who don't know what is/is not appropriate to say on a message board. Recently, there was a topic on here about whether or not people on here go to church and why/why not. We went for a VERY long time (5 pages of posts, I believe) without anyone saying anything inappropriate, defensive, or argumentative about religion, but it only took 1 or 2 silly people to ruin it. I yearn for the day when we are all mature enough and thoughtful enough to have the foresight to know what we can express and when to keep things to ourselves for the sake of harmony and intelligent discussion :^: And I'm sure our fabulous mods yearn for that, too ;) |
