Question 1500 calories?

I'm 5'4" and 145 pounds. I'm a dancer and I realize this seems like a lot but my legs are very muscley. My stomach and love handles are my target area. Recently I started on fitday and I realized that I only eat about 1500 calories a day. I'm burning about double this. I'm very confused as to why I haven't been losing weight when obviously I have fatty spots in my stomach and love handles. Help! I'm getting all of my nutrients and whatnot. I don't know what else to do.

try bumping it up for a couple of days and see what happens. If you burn twice that daily you could be in starvation mode.

I agree it sounds like maybe you are eating too little.

I'd also like to say that 145lbs isnt ALOT, in fact I'd say the most you need to lose is about 10 lbs ...

Heh, yes - to walk intot a forum where the vast majority of people are much more than that weight and to calmly announce that you weight "a lot" is goin to raise a few hackles!!

It certainly did mine - although I'm sure that was not your intention.

It reminds me of a normally skinny internet acquaintance of mine who weighed 150 after she had her baby and still rails about how "huge and digusting" she was back then! She doesn't understand why I feel offended!

I agree that you may not be eating enough. Lean body mass burns calories at a greater rate than fat, and you're very active too. Do you feel fatigued, foggy etc.? Or like you can't get through a rehearsal at full strength? It's possible you aren't getting enough fuel.

I would suggest that you try bumping it up to 1600-1800 and monitor your weight and how you feel for a few weeks.

Also, maybe you want to get your body fat % tested. Maybe what you're thinking of as love handles is just the healthy level of body fat women have. You say you're very muscular. You may have less to lose than you think based only on the scale.

This is the featherweights forum. What's the problem? The 120's are in the healthy weight range for 5'4".

I agree. This the featherweight forum, so the vast majority of people on this particular forum are not terribly overweight. She obviously is not trying to offend anyone here. She may feel like that is a lot for a featherweight.

Oops - my bad.

Obviously I've been posting in the wrong room.

I'll go and find the room where the people who weigh 'a lot' post then.

FTR - I was referring to the entire 3fc forum, not just this room.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic here or not, but let me just say, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Everyone has their own body image problems. To me the featherweight forum is for people who want to lose a little weight or are close to their goal. The OP is pretty new here. Let's welcome her, encourage her & not try to get all judgemental about her words.

I have to agree with murphmitch. this is a supportive place.

I believe eriningp is genuinely concerned and it's highly unlikely that she came to the featherweights forum to insult anyone. Also, she said she is a dancer, which is probably why she felt the need to qualify that it seems like a "lot" for someone who probably spends the majority of their time getting physical activity.

Everyone has their own struggles, no matter their size.

eriningp, as some of the others have said, trying bumping up your calories a bit. I'm close to the same size as you and I was having the same trouble a couple of weeks ago. I added a few more healthy calories to my intake and things seemed to straighten out.

Hi erin,

First of all-welcome!

I am also a dancer, and I can relate to some of your struggles. It seems that being a dancer, or personal trainer, or anything that physical-that it should automatically keep you slim...but that isn't always the case, is it?

I took a look at your FitDay, and I see that you do average around 1500 a day-cycling from 1200-1700 on most days. From what I saw, however, I think that it might help if you cleaned up your eating just a bit. I see some regular pizza, frankfurters, and other things on there. If those calories were switched to lean protein, and more fruits and veggies-you might get some better results. It seems to help me, anyway.

Also, what kind of dancing do you do, and for approximately how long per day? It is very possible that you might not be burning as much as you think. 3000 calories a day is a LOT of dancing. Belly dancing burns around 300 calories an hour, if done intensely, and I would have to dance 10 hours a day to burn that dancing.

I also understand that at 145 pounds, even though it is a healthy weight, that you can still have issues in the dance field. When your body affects your livelyhood...it is a different thing than someone who has a career that is unrelated to their body.

Again, welcome!
