Smasher Buddies I have a confession to make - I blew it last night:mad:
I started the diet Wednesday and I cheated and weighed myself early Sat morning (I had lost 3lbs) I was so excited. I followed the program during the day but last night hubby took me out to my favorite mexican food place and I only ate a chalupa but it was loaded with guacamole and sour cream. I felt guilty but it tasted soooo good. I did not weigh myself this morning but I am back on track and intend to stay on track so that I can really see what this diet can do. By the way I was willing to eat out because I had just taken the hardest test of my life that morning and I wanted to celebrate that it was over. I just finished getting my masters in education and tested for my principal certification Saturday morning. Whew!!!!! Now I just have to wait for the results.

Question... how long does brown rice stay fresh in the fridge? I have a little left from last week. I wonder if it's still fresh to use on Monday?

Annie & Kara, I am so proud of you for making such great choices. I honor your discipline and will power. I am going to need some tonight as I will be meeting some friends at our favorite sushi spot. I sure hope they have brown rice sushi.

Jan, its okay. Just pick up and continue where you left off. It would be a good idea to stay on detox for 2 or 3 more days... it won't hurt anything. We all have been where you are. Congratualations on the 3 pounds :carrot:

annierew 06-22-2008 03:04 PM

Janmot - Don't sweat it! I cheated yesterday, too, and had steak. If you have the book, read over the beginning, since he says that this is for life, and we're going to go off plan now and again, it's how we decide to deal with it. We can either go off plan completely, or decide to get back on track for the next meal. And since we decided to get back on plan, we're heading in the right direction. Woo Hoo!

So, since I did pass on my mashed potatoes last night, all I can do is think about them. Does anyone have a recipe for mashed sweet potatoes? I think I'm going to mess around with foods we're allowed on detox to see if I can come up with something comparable. If it works, I'll let you know.

kara d bride2b 06-22-2008 05:07 PM

Jan: I completely understand where you're coming from. When I took my Comps exams for my masters I most definitely celebrated afterwards. And like Annie and C Bo said, you can get right back on track, no worries. It's funny, Mexican food has been calling my name lately. I was watching a show where they were doing salsa dancing and I couldn't even watch it because all I was thinking about was Mexican food-hahaha. So be glad you enjoyed that chalupa and just get back on track-no problem! :)

C Bo: I know you can have the willpower to resist at the sushi place. And if they have brown rice sushi then it really will be a better place to be than Mexican or Italian or a burger joint because it's fish. And even though that's not allowed on Phase 1, it is allowed on Phase 2. So it won't be THAT bad off program if you do have to go off a little bit.

Annie-I don't really have a recipe, but I do make mashed sweet potatoes and Ryan said the other day that they were like a mix between mashed potatoes and a dessert, so you might like them. They were a fix for me since I love mashed potatoes so much. I just hollow out the sweet potato after I cook it and put some spray butter, cinnamon, even a little bit of pepper on it if you like it salty. It makes it so creamy and delicious. SO good. In fact, he's grilling chicken today and I'm making them as my side dish. Today is actually my first day to eat on Phase 2. I'm not even used to what I can eat-it's weird. Good luck making them, and if you think of anything else, let me know. Other than the sweet potato fries, there are not any recipes for them in the recipe thread...I looked at all 6 pages!!

Have a great day ladies!!

C Bo 06-22-2008 05:31 PM

Annie, what about the mock smashed potatoes using cauliflower?

Here's a recipe that I found.

1 medium head cauliflower
1 tablespoon cream cheese, softened (substitute olive oil or fat free yogurt)
1/4 cup grated Parmesan (substitute veggie shreds)
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/8 teaspoon straight chicken base or bullion (may substitute 1/2 teaspoon salt)
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon chopped fresh or dry chives, for garnish
3 tablespoons unsalted butter

Set a stockpot of water to boil over high heat.
Clean and cut cauliflower into small pieces. Cook in boiling water for about 6 minutes, or until well done. Drain well; do not let cool and pat cooked cauliflower very dry between several layers of paper towels.

In a bowl with an immersion blender, or in a food processor, puree the hot cauliflower with the cream cheese, Parmesan, garlic, chicken base, and pepper until almost smooth.
Garnish with chives, and serve hot with pats of butter.

kara d bride2b 06-22-2008 08:14 PM

I've had these before-don't know what the recipe was because my mom made them for me, and they were good. I love cauliflower though, so it made it easier for me to like them. :)

annierew 06-22-2008 10:18 PM

Thanks, C Bo. I've tried mashed califlower, but it just isn't the same. I still had some sweet potato chopped up for fries, so I had them today, but tomorrow night I'm going to try a mashed sweet potato concoction. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Janbot - I forgot to say so, but congrats on getting your masters. That's a huge accomplishment!!!

My menu for the day: (I woke up really late, so I didn't eat as many meals)
L - big bowl of steamed veggies, sweet potato fries
S - fruit salad
D - brown rice, corn, red beans and salad dressing
S - bowl of corn and green beans, pickle

taragettingthin 06-22-2008 11:14 PM

Hey ladies, I have a question...since we are talking about sweet potatoes.

I have made sweet potato fries couple times so far and it came out kinda burnt both times. I followed the recipe to the T... not sure what to do.

What do you guys do exactly ... ?

Thank you ladies! I have to weigh myself tomorrow morning because of one of the challenges I'm in. But after that, I sure am going to stay away from the scale. My day 10 is Wed but I think I'm going to do Phase 1 for 11 days, since I cheated 2 days although it was small stuff. Just an idea so far..haven't decided though. But no matter what, I WILL stay away from the scale untile THE DAY, I promise.

janmot 06-23-2008 07:54 AM

Ladies,
You were right. I cheated Saturday night but went right back on track Sunday. I weighed this morning am at the 3lb loss mark so what I did Saturday is off. YEAH!.

I like all the recipes you guys are sharing. I have had both of the sweet potatoe and cauliflower recipes and really enjoyed them. So far I haven't experimented too much just sticking with what is listed and not going beyond. I guess I want to make sure I am really on track before I branch out. Thanks for the advice too about extending phase 1 to counter my cheat.
You guys are the best:hug:

Jan

LisaNJ33 06-23-2008 08:11 AM

You are so right about waiting to weigh it.. stupid me weighed in Saturday on day 6 and I was down 11 pounds..:carrot: but than I stepped on the scales yesterday and was up 3. I had done great all weekend..even took the family out for ice cream and I had none..so wht did I do last night..have a small slice of pizza andasomeapenuts. The sad thing I wasnt even hungry, just annoyed:devil:

So now its monday.. I have a fridge full of veggies and fruits and I am reaay to dive right back in.

kara d bride2b 06-23-2008 03:20 PM

Good job jumping back on track, Lisa. I'm the same way as you sometimes, and that's why I refuse to weigh myself. I get so frustrated that I'm not losing that I want to go eat (at least that's what I've done in the past.) And in the end, that sure won't help! But you are smart to jump right back on plan. Even if it was just 8 lbs in 6 days-that's AWESOME!!! I lost 11 lbs. in 9 days, so you will have a significant loss, don't worry!!!

Jan: Glad that your loss didn't really affect your weight loss. Way to go!!!! I'm glad you've liked the recipes that were on here so far. This place is a great place to find good ways to cook things-I love going through the recipe thread and finding different ways to cook things that I've got. And think that helps to add some spontaneity to our diets, you know?

Glad to hear everyone is doing well!!!

Kara :-)

taragettingthin 06-23-2008 03:27 PM

By the way, one thing I've really noticed since starting the FSD. My BM is going great. I used to go once in 3-4 days if not once a week. Now, at least once every other day, if not every day. That's great, isn't it? :D

Sorry for TMI, though. heh. :D

C Bo 06-23-2008 07:16 PM

Ladies, I've fallen off the wagon and trampled by the horses.

The sushi cafe did not have any brown rice sushi so I ordered my norm. The thing is, I didn't even think twice about it. It was so good. Then today, a co-worker brought in a breakfast casserole. I had planned on starting again but didn't. I'm not going to beat myself up about it though. I'm going to start fresh tomorrow and continue from there. I may do an extra 9 days of detox.

Sorry guys, I'm human. I've realized my mistake and now I'm ready to move on. I feel so dirty and bloated with all this gunk in me.

Tomorrow is a new day!

kara d bride2b 06-23-2008 07:32 PM

That's ok C Bo! Just make sure to jump back on the bandwagon tomorrow, and you'll be just fine!! We are all human, and that's definitely going to play a part in dieting. And you most DEFINITELY do not need to apologize to anyone. What you did is perfectly normal, and you'll be just fine!

No worries!!! :)

annierew 06-23-2008 07:39 PM

Tara - That's hilarious! I was thinking that same thing yesterday. I have been eating lots of corn lately, and it's definitely keeping me regular!

C Bo - only one more day of detox! Woo Hoo!!!! :carrot: I have a phobia of scales, so I didn't get on one to see how much I lost. Last year when I went from a size 22 to a size 16, I only lost about 20 pounds at the very most. So, I figure if I feel better and keep dropping sizes, then I'm in the right direction. I'm nervous to get on the scale on Wednesday, since I know what I was the last time I weighed in and hope it's further from there than possible. Now I'm wishing that I got on in the beginning. It's always a motivation when you see that you dropped a lot.

Like a lot of you, I think that I'm going to stay on detox for a couple more days. I have a big weekend coming up centered around lots of food and booze, so I figured if I detox for two extra days, I won't worry if I cheat a little this weekend. I'm not planning on cheating, but if it happens!

I did have a little cheat today, but again, it was one of those things that was out of my hands. Okay, I didn't have to have the bread, but I did eat a little bit of it, since it's so delicious. We had a client meeting who ordered for us. She got us all salads, but they had pine nuts and cheese and was already mixed with dressing. Oh well, I ate well the rest of my meals today.

kara d bride2b 06-23-2008 07:47 PM

Annie,
That's awesome about your lunch today. I think that you did just fine, and you can always detox a couple of days if you want. I love and miss bread. I honestly am getting to that point today where I'm just SICK of watching what I eat, but I didn't go off the diet. Instead, I made my brown rice (1C) for lunch and mixed some ranch and 1 oz of fat free cheddar melted in with it. It was SO good and it made me feel like I cheated. So that helped, but it didn't help THAT much since my fiance' made THREE personal pizzas-homemade with olive oil on the crust and whatever toppings he wanted. I wanted to just stuff all three of them in my mouth at once. LOL.

Anyway, hope all of you had a great day!!

Kara :-)

annierew 06-23-2008 08:05 PM

Tara - about the sweet potato fries...

Maybe you're cutting them smaller than the recipe. Try cooking it for a shorter period of time, or keep looking in on them, or cook at a lower heat.

I cut up the potatoes and put in a ziplock bag. I add in the olive oil and some pepper then close the bag and mix them up. I let them sit overnight (since I'm trying to prepare everything ahead of time to make it easier) and bake. I keep checking in on them every 5 minutes or so.

Hope that helps, since they are so super YUMMY!!!!! Even if they weren't on the plan!

C Bo 06-23-2008 08:35 PM

Good idea annie, I'm going to cut mine up tonight for tomorrow's dinner.

You are so funny! all three of them in mouth at once! but personal pizza does sound good. YUMMY... :P (Im just making it worse here, ain't I?)

I think I'm going to stay on Detox and weigh on Friday, since I cheated little bit over the weekend. That would be total of 11 days...but then I get to "enjoy" food on weekend, too...and I have a big house party on Friday night so... (although I'm going to try my bestEST to stay on plan...:P)

:carrot: for you for staying on the plan for the rest of the day! yay! =)

kara d bride2b 06-23-2008 10:26 PM

Hahaha, yeah, pizza is most definitely one of my weaknesses. When I first started it haunted me. I really wanted to eat it, all the time. But I didn't. :) But his, I mean, they looked so good. LOL. He bought the ingredients at the grocery store and made them in the oven, so they were fresh and looked SO good. haha. But I resisted temptation. And my cheesy rice was a good substitute. I like being able to have that 1 oz. of cheese in Phase 2.

That's cool about staying on Phase 1 a little longer. A lot of people seem to be taking that route, and I don't think there's a thing wrong with it. I actually went a few days over Phase 1, not on purpose, but just because I hadn't picked up my goodies from the grocery yet. So I technically started Phase 2 yesterday, even though I finished Phase 1 like 4 days ago.

I'm just happy about all the energy I've had. I have been cleaning my house like it hasn't been cleaned in a year. I have done the living room and the kitchen-just getting rid of stuff I don't use or need, etc., to donate. I did 1/2 of my computer room for the last 2 days. I had to clean out my file cabinet, etc. I am honestly doing more work on it than my fiance'-LOL.

Have a great night all!!! :)

LisaNJ33 06-23-2008 11:18 PM

Count me in on another staying on Phase 1 longer. I have my sisters graduation party coming up on Sunday and I know I wont stay on plan. There will be way to much good greek food lol

Thank you Annie! Do yours turn out kinda crispy or more like baked potato? (so i know what to look for... :P) It's kinda hard to keep checking in on them at my oven because it doesn't have see through glass so it sucks because I have to open the oven every time I want to check. Also, do you flip them like the recipe says?

I will have to try tomorrow again...since I am missing it. :D

You're going to LOVE them! I mix them around the pan once or twice. You can cook them however you like fries normally, cut thick for steak fries; small for shoestring. Then cook the same, if you like crispy, then keep in a bit, then if you like them soft, don't cook as long. I do taste them along the way when it looks like they're close to being done. I normally put the timer on for 10-15 minutes (depending on how many I'm cooking) and then flip and let cook again. Once you figure it out, you don't have to keep checking in on them so much. Good Luck! :cheer3::cheer2::hun:

taragettingthin 06-24-2008 04:28 PM

Thank you Annie. I have sweet potatoes sitting in ziplock bag and will be trying them for dinner. Will let you know how they turn out. :D

C Bo 06-24-2008 06:12 PM

Has anyone felt as if they had eaten too much for dinner even if the foods are premitted? I think I have.

Please tell me what you think... nothing but the truth.

1 C prepared brown rice
1/2 bag of steamfresh asian veggies
onions, scallions & mushrooms
2 T of soy sauce
1 crumbled veggie burger

My plate was full. I feel like I've over done it. I was hungry!

janmot 06-24-2008 06:23 PM

Fellow Smashers:

I am soooo proud of myself today. I needed to go shopping and usually when I shop I get so hungry that I stop at a fast food place and eat whatever is handy but today I went prepared I took a bag of carrots with me to snack on until I could get back home and it really helped curb my desire to stop. Although, i have to admit I really wanted to stop and get something. Anyway I made it back home w/o stopping. Mexican food is my downfall and I was craving Mexican food so I opened a can of black beans and mashed them up like refried beans heated it with a little cheese (I know not on the list but it was just a little) and then poured jalapeno juice over and it was really good. It satisfied my craving for Mexican food w/o ruining the diet.:carrot: I may try it again but add some brown rice. I too am going out of town this weekend but will try to stay within the limits of the diet.

Jan

annierew 06-24-2008 07:52 PM

Janbot - :cp: That was a great substitution for Mexican. I LOVE refried beans, so I think that's a great idea. I'm going to try it. Good job on passing up on old habits.

C Bo - I hear you on going two more days on detox. I'm anxious to allow more foods into my diet, but in the meantime, I think I'm going to detox two more days, too. I had a few items off plan, so I figured this could keep me on track. Plus, this weekend is a busy one, and I'm sure there will be a slip up or two. I'm trying really hard to plan good options, but how much can one resist temptation? We're having a 60th bday party for my father and there will be ice cream cake (yummy, yummy, yummy), soft pretzels, good food and who knows what else?

Also, I don't think you ate too much unless you felt stuffed at the end. There are some days where I'm never filled, and then some where I only eat a little bit. I guess we have to learn to know when enough is enough.

Tara - Good luck with your fries tonight!

Lisa - Greek food, yum yum gimme some! Good luck with the temptation. I hope there are some good choices for you, and if not, I hope you really enjoy the food! ;)

Kara - all that talk about pizza is making me crave some. That is a huge weakness of mine, and I can never remember a time when I was sick of pizza. And when you're done cleaning your house, why don't you stop by mine? I am getting more energy, but I feel like there's just so much more to do lately. I would love a vacation soon! Luckily there's one set up for the end of August, so it gives me time to lose some weight by then, but it would be nice to be sitting on a beach right about now! :beach:

taragettingthin 06-24-2008 09:26 PM

Janmot, thanks for the idea. I have some black beans at home but wasn't sure what to do with them. Since I love refried beans, I think I'm going to try it, too. :)

C Bo - I have mixed rice and veggies . . and although it was only 1 cup of cooked rice, it always seemed like it was A LOT. I think it's because of veggies that are added. As long as you didn't feel stuffed, like annie said, I don't think it was too much.

Annie, sweet potato turned out great. Actually my bf cut it up and he did like chips. Some of them were little thick and some of them were very thin. The very thin ones turned out JUST LIKE CHIPS! About 10 minutes each side, and it was pretty good, not crisp, though. I know most of them were kinda thick, so next time we are going to cut them really thin and then cook little bit less, since the thin ones were little bit burnt this time. :)

kara d bride2b 06-24-2008 09:54 PM

Ahhh, Mexican food. That's got to be one of my favorite cuisines. I really miss having it, but at least you can do stuff like mashed beans to make you feel like you're eating it, you know?

The sweet potato fries sound good-I haven't yet made them, but I will sometime soon. Doing them like chips sounds good, but I think doing them like french fries would be REALLY good because I miss french fries!!!

Annie, I definitely miss pizza just like you do. And I have never gotten tired of it, honestly. I have looked at the recipes here that are for pizzas, but I haven't ever tried them because a lot of the ingredients I don't really care for. But who knows, temptation may lead me to try their recipes so I don't cook the real thing.

And C Bo, I don't think you ate too much. There was one night at my dad's that I probably ate more than you did, but you just eat until you're full. That's the nice thing about this diet, is that it's not like you're stuffing yourself full of anything bad.

Way to go Jan! I usually eat at the food court at our mall, and it is terrible!!! Last time we went I ate a plate from the Greek place- YUM! So I definitely take my hat off (if I had one on) to you for taking the carrots-that's the kind of thing that will give you guaranteed success!!!

Glad everyone is doing well! :)

janmot 06-25-2008 09:24 AM

Tara: I like the idea of slicing the sweet potatoes really thin and making chips. Chips are a down fall of mine and if I can make my own w/o all the oil then this will be a great substitute. Thanks.

Jan

annierew 06-25-2008 11:01 PM

Tara - LOVE the idea of doing chips. I love potato chips and have been eyeing up the bag in the kitchen the past two nights. I know I don't want them, but to have an alternative really helps. Do any of you feel that when you tell yourself you can't have something, that's all you want? BUT, when you say you can't have something and then have a great alternative, it just doesn't tempt you anymore? That's definitely how I work. I want what I can't have. Always!

taragettingthin 06-25-2008 11:03 PM

Annie It works the same way with me. I think it's our mind trying to play games with us. :P

kara d bride2b 06-26-2008 02:27 AM

YEP! If I can't have it, that definitely means that I want it even more. Too bad it doesn't work the other way-like if I pretend I don't want it, I really won't. But it doesn't work that way-if I pretend I don't want pizza or Mexican food, I still WANT it!!!!

janmot 06-26-2008 11:16 AM

Hey team,
Today is day 9 (YEAH) and I weighed in with a weight loss of 6lbs.:carrot:

I am heading out of town later today so I won't be online again until Monday or Tuesday. This will be my first real test away from home trying to stay on track but with this loss I really feel motivated to stick to it. I only exercised a couple of times so I can't help but wonder how much more I could have lost if I had worked out more but no matter I am thrilled. Just with 6lbs I already feel that my clothes are a little looser (actually they fit because before they were too tight). I had planned to stay on phase I a little longer but I think I might start phase II then when I get back I go back on phase I to jump kick my weight loss again. Anyway, everyone have a great weekend. I am going to the coast for a few days of fun, sun and fishing.

Jan

taragettingthin 06-26-2008 02:04 PM

Congrats janmot. 6 lbs is great!

I decided to do couple more days of Phase 1...and today was going to be my last day of Phase 1 but I'm getting little bit discouraged... Yesterday was my 10th day and... I started at 192.6 last Monday. This Monday, I was at 189.6. Then I weighed today because I was thinking about starting Phase 2 today...and it was 190.4. So I lost 3 lbs in one week (I weigh on Monday because it's my official weigh-in day)... and then gained 0.8. In total, that's 2.2 lbs. Not the big result of 9 days like everyone's seeing...

I'm not stuffing myself, drinking about 2 liters of water every day, work out 5-6 days a week. I haven't really cheated, I'm not stuffing myself... So I'm not sure what to do... starting to wonder if my body is in "Starvation mode" or if I need to work out more..since I used to work out close to an hour and have been working out only about 30 minutes or so daily now. But I def am eating less (calorie wise and portion wise) than before so although my workout is less than before, I thought it wouldn't matter...

I'm not done yet with the Phase 1 yet but still...since it's been 10 days, I was hoping to see at least 5 lbs loss... :( I am starting to wonder if I should just pick up myself and go back to IE...and just make sure to use the fruit and veggie eating habit along with healthier cooking...

I'm sorry but just wanted to vent somewhere...sigh...

taragettingthin 06-26-2008 04:49 PM

Well... I've been thinking about spaghetti squash for a very long time and finally had my bf get one the last time he went grocery shopping. So I cooked it today and made spaghetti with it and it's just like angel hair pasta. Very healthy totally phase 1 spaghetti! Spaghetti squash instead of pasta, tomato sauce with white beans, chopped up red pepper, mushroom, garlic, chopped up onion, chopped up squash, Italian seasoning, and pepper. Enough veggies and protein and feels like i'm eating pasta! yay! You can use any sauce you want with it. I started eating it because I was hungry and it's not my DD's dinner time yet. Well, she had a bite from mine and keeps asking for more. Bunch of veggies and she has no idea it's in it. :P

If anyone is interested in it, I will post details on what to do with the squash.

B: zucchini omelet with 1 egg white
S: Nothing...? Not really hungry and time went by quite fast..oops
L: spaghetti with spaghetti squash and bunch of veggies
S: probably fruit and fat free yogurt (since i haven't packed it yet...I am not sure)
D: ? (haven't decided yet. lol)
S: strawberry

Tara:
I am really really sorry about you feeling discouraged, and I can completely understand your disappointment. I honestly have no idea why you haven't dropped more than 2.2 lbs, the only thing I could say is that maybe you have gained it in muscle? If you are doing strength training and things like that, which you must be gaining muscle if you're seeing more definition in your clothes and body, then you must be gaining muscle. But other than that, I really don't know or understand. You are doing everything right. What is IE? Just curious.

The spaghetti squash sounds AWESOME. I had read recipes for it before but never tried it because I didn't know if it would really be that much like spaghetti, but it's sounding like it might be pretty darn close.

I'm going to make the oatmeal cookies tonight...were they good?

I hope you feel better, and even if you decide not to go to Fat Smash anymore, we would love for you to keep posting-we'd miss you!!

Hope everybody is having a good day!!

Tara - Congrats on the weight loss! A loss is a loss is a loss...you're heading in the right direction! :carrot: There are a few things that could change what your outcome is: you should weigh in at the same time each day, and make sure you go to the bathroom prior to weighing in. (I learned these from weightwatchers!) If you're drinking all the water that is recommended, then you could be holding on to that water. Don't give up on your weight loss goals. You're definitely doing a good job, even if it isn't the loss you were anticipating. This is why I stay clear of scales. If I feel better about myself and drop sizes, then I know I'm doing something right. But when I weigh myself, it's only a couple of pounds, and I'm not so excited anymore. Maybe you're like me.

I'm so excited about trying spaghetti squash! I love spaghetti! Has anything been listed that I haven't loved? I'm beginning to see my major problem here...I love EVERYTHING!!!!

Jan - Have fun on your trip, and congrats on the weight loss!
