  • After worship service anyone that wanted to take part could sing in the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah, I have always wanted to take part in a Hallelujah Sing. It ws glorious almost everybody stayed and sang along with the choir and the pipe organ.
  • Christ arose! What a glorious day! Hope everyone's had a fantastic Easter Sunday!

We had a really nice day, but did it the lazy way-ordered KFC and just picked up the meal DS1 and family came down and we had a nice day sitting, visiting, and watching movies.

    Have a nice Monday
  • He is Risen indeed!!
I had a really relaxing weekend. We had our family event a couple of weeks ago and our kids with our adorable grandson were with DILs family so we were alone for the weekend. It was wierd but kind of nice. I wouldn't want to do it every holiday but DH and I had some time together which was nice.

We skyped with our kids in Ontario and got our first glimpse of our new grandson. How can a person have 2 adorable babies in one family?

I went fabric shopping with a good friend on Saturday. I have a passion for quilting and just about overdosed on the colors out there!

My eating wasn't the best but today I'm back on track eating my veggies again. I'm interested in what I've been reading here about cutting back on wheat products. I'll have to read up more about it. I have also read that you should have your carbs/grains before 3 p.m. I'm not sure why. Again, more research for me to do!

    Have a great week everyone!
  • I have a theological queerie for you all today -- didn't Jesus actually rise on the 3rd day after the crucifixion? I remember Him saying about his own death ... "Tear this temple down, and in 3 days it will rise again" or something like that. The verse was clarified to mean that He was talking about Himself.

3 days from Friday is actually Monday -- today. I suppose that is why they call this day "Easter Monday". So, why do people say that Jesus rose on Sunday, when He actually rose on Monday?

Do the churches do this just so that they can have a special Easter service on the traditional Sunday service day? Hmmm ... DH & I were mulling this over last night.
  • Rosebud-About the question you asked, we learned that the 3 days were counted as Friday (Passover) being the 1st day, Saturday the 2nd day, and on the 3rd day (Sunday), Jesus rose, so He counted the days as 1, 2, 3, starting with Friday as 1, not Saturday. The resurrection on Sunday is why the disciples began celebrating it on Sunday instead of sticking with the Sabbath Friday evening to Saturday evening, as Jesus had fulfilled the requirements of the law and the Sabbath observance was no longer required. Hope that helps

Wilma-Isn't skype wonderful? I love that I can skype my ds at college and SEE how he's doing! And, of course, once you have one adorable grandbaby, they'll all be adorable I have also cut back on my wheat products, as I was having terrible issues when I added psyllium fiber to my diet. Cutting back on all of the wheat and adding oatmeal and lots of veggies has helped my situation considerably. Not losing yet, but I haven't been keeping close watch on the actual calorie count each day-too busy running around and eating on the run right now. Hoping that situation resolves soon too.

DS3 has a soccer game tonight, but won't be able to play, as he has a very inflamed Achilles tendon area on his ankle. We have him in physical therapy and the therapist thinks he may be back to full practices next week, depending on how the 'no running' workouts help the area heal.

Wondering if anyone has heard of withdrawal symptoms from long-term benadryl use? Mom had some allergy patch testing started (over 100 patches on her back right now!), but went off her daily 6-8 benadryl tablets after 20 years. She called yesterday totally losing it, due to her 'reaction' to the patches, but the symptoms were nausea, chills, sweating, and hyperactivity. Looking on-line, I found a lot of anecdotal evidence that these symptoms are not actually an allergic reaction, but are withdrawal symptoms. We did call the doctor, who has said the same thing and told her to keep taking the benadryl, as it won't interfere with the testing too much and will keep Mom stable. But, wondering now if most of Mom's 'allergy' symptoms over the years have been withdrawal from stopping the benadryl too suddenly, then thinking she was having allergic reactions, going back on the stuff, stabilizing, stopping it again, reacting, starting it again.......... Anyone have any experience with this or know how to wean someone off benadryl without causing more harm?

Well, anyway, it's about time to head off to get DS3 on the bus for the game and send DS2 back to college for the end of the term. Have a great evening everyone!
  • Thanks, RONNIE ~ Ok, but if the Sabbath starts at sundown on Friday and goes to sundown on Saturday, that's only one day. Then from sundown Saturday to Sunday is two days. From Sunday to Monday is three ...

Now I believe Jesus died in the morning (around the nineth hour: 9 AM? -- Matthew 27:46) on Friday; so, then He had to have risen by about 9 AM on Monday morning. I know it was in the early morning that Mary found the tomb empty. Matthew 28:1 says this ...

"In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn (on) the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene & the other Mary to the tomb." Then there was an earthquake and an Angel moved the stone from the tomb, and he told Mary to go tell the others that Jesus had risen." pp

Now unless it was becuz Jesus died early Friday morning that it was counted as the first day, is the only way to make sense of it. Yes, he must have been put on the cross very early Friday (or some would say Thursday night) as it says he was already on the cross before the 6th hour (6 AM); and becuz from the 6th to 9th hour it fell totally dark, then He called out, and died at 9 AM.

Jesus said in Mark 9:31 that after He was killed, He shall rise the third day. But in Mark 14, it says that Jesus & his disciples ate the Passover Meal the night before he died, which was before Friday. "And in that evening he came to them (for the passover meal)" v17. That night (Thursday), just as Jesus said, He was taken away (Mark 14:27).

He was taken to PILATE, questioned and released to the priests that same night. Then they beat him & scourged him. Sometime after midnight Thursday night, they took him to Golgotha to be crucified (straight away in the very early morning; vs 15:1).

Mark 15:25 says, they crucified him in the third hour (meaning 3 AM, Friday morning; during the night between Thursday & Friday). He died 6 hours later, at 9 AM on Friday morning.

So, that makes it three (3) days from Thursday night til Sunday -- Thursday to Friday to Saturday to Sunday morning.

OK, now that we've solved that, tell me ... why do we call Monday, Easter Monday???
  • Rosebud-The Jews did not count the days as starting in the evening, just certain holy days and the Sabbath, so each day was counted as starting in the morning. In fact, they counted the hours of each day as beginning at sunrise or about 6 am, so the 6th hour would have been about noon.

Jesus had to be buried before the beginning of the Sabbath on Friday evening or He wouldn't have been able to be buried until Saturday evening after the sabbath ended. As far as the Passover meal He and the disciples shared, my understanding is they had that meal on Thursday, then went to the garden to pray-I need to do some more research on this, but I don't think that was the actual Passover meal the disciples thought they'd be having, as it was early, but I'm not too familiar with the Jewish traditions, so have to check on this. I heard a great Messianic Jewish pastor speaking on the radio the other night, but didn't get to hear the entire broadcast, so need to find a tape on it. Most of our misunderstandings on Holy week and the time stems from us not knowing how all the Jewish traditions fit together. But, I did find this timeline, if that helps: bg3-blog.s3.amazonaws.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/holy-week-timeline.png It also contains scriptural references.

I read regularly from the Contemporary English Version Bible and the scriptures in Matthew tell that the sky turned dark at noon on the day Jesus was crucified and stayed dark until 3pm(Matt. 27:45) at which time Jesus shouted (Matt. 27:46). Matt. 28:1 says that the women went to the tomb at daybreak on Sunday, where the angel told them that Jesus wasn't there.

As I understand, the Jewish Sabbath (Saturday, basically) was considered the 7th day of the week, the day of rest, according to the Law, so Sunday was the first day of each week, which is how some of the translations refer to the day the women found Jesus' tomb empty.

Don't know if any of this is helping or hindering, but I had to do a lot of study to understand this too. If I find more info, I'll send you links or book titles. Much of what I learned I've learned from Christian radio messages, too. American Family Radio is a great network with lots of affiliates!
  • Thanks, RONNIE ~ I agree with you that the "last supper" meal was on Thursday evening; and the disciples did call it the passover feast meal in Matthew 26:17 (also known as the feast of the unleavened bread) -- and Jesus told them where to go to hold this passover meal, then the disciples went and prepared it.

As for the times, boy that sure messes things up doesn't it? So, that means their days and hours are different than we know them to be. I thought that I had heard somewhere that the sky darkened at noon, but we start our days at midnight, but you say the Jews start theirs at dawn.

Then that means that Jesus was crucified about 6 AM Friday morning; the sky darkened between 9 AM to 12 pm noon, then he died ... So, the references in Matthew & Luke to the third day cannot mean that 3 whole days will pass, but only that on the third day after the day of his death, he will rise. It is the only explanation that fits ...

So, we just need to know why we call Monday, Easter Monday; and why it is a holiday in Canada. Is it one in the US?
  • Traditionally the hours when the sky darkened was between 12 Noon and 3 PM. Many churches have services on Good Friday between 12 Noon and 3PM, I have been to many of them.
The Jewish calendar is nothing like the calendar that we use today.
The Jewish day starts at sunset.
I thought I had heard that and just googled it and several souces say the same thing.
  • You gals rock!

    Luke 24

    Jesus Has Risen

1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. 2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
  • In Hebrew usage, parts of days at the beginning and end of a period were counted as days.
  • BARGOO ~ Interesting, if you look at my first post, you'll see where I mentioned that their day started at sundown (or dusk), which is what I had always believed. Wow, there are sure many different versions, aren't there?

According to your time table, Jesus was crucified at 9 AM; sky darkened at noon to 3 pm; then He died ... One of our local churches did have a big ecumenical service on Friday; will check the time on that.

    Thanks for your input, GARY.

Some day, I may find out the answer to my last question; I'll keep asking and searching until I do ...
  • Here is a link to Angie and her daughter, Lara, playing bells for Good Friday service....Angie is on the right of the draped cross and is too dark to see.

  • Thanks, Gary ~ I love hearing them play ...
