Hi guys I only have a minute to write....I need some advice. I'm having some sort of pain/uncomfortable-ness in the front of thigh area above my knees (my knees don't hurt). Its fine sitting but I can feel it when walking and I had to cut my running sort yesterday. Does it just need rest, do I modify and do some other type of exercise for a week or do I push through?
Anyone else have this? thanks in advance! :-)

Hmm, I'm gonna post here! I didn't realize there was a running thread! I think I need to get back on my plan! I am too doing the c25k program and was on wk 3, however I only ran once this pass week...so I will get my butt into gear! The only thing I am so self-concious here in my town because so many people know me & I feel uncomfortable...especially because they seen me in my smaller days!

Geez JD get over it...I have too tell myself its okay exercise for the body you want & I'm sure someone will look up too you for running!

Okay talk soon!

is it a sharp pain or more of an ache? it sounds like your quad muscles are sore or tight from running. Make sure you have been stretching well before and after runs, and icing can also help with that soreness. Personally, unless it is a sharp or debilitating pain, i would try to work through it. I find most muscle soreness loosens up pretty well once i get moving.

Finn- I have to agree with eadavenp. It does sound like sore quads. Unless it is sharp pain, I would also work through. You may need to modify your runs for a week or so for comfort, but stretch well making sure that you do a good warm up prior to running.

Welcome Jenny! Hope this forum gives you encouragment and allows for accountability for you.

Edited to add: Congratulations Shrinking Mama! You made it... Good luck on all your new challenges as a Runner.

Thanks Eadavenp and Softballmom - I'll give it a go today after work...its definitely not sharp pain, more of an ache above my right knee. I have iced and used a heating pad since Friday but it hasn't let up. I'll be sure to pay extra attention to warm up today and try to work though it. Thanks a million for your advice!

Welcome Jenny - be sure to come and post here often, this thread is a great motivator!

Ok, completed week 6 day 1. It was a bit of a challenge, because i decided to add an incline of one to the first running segment. I should have been learning to run all along on an incline, to better mimic running outdoors, but oh well... It was HARD! my pulse (according to the crummy pulse-o-meter on the treadmill) was up to 233 when that finished. I did the rest of my run with no incline. I also managed to go 2.15 miles, taking my avg mile time to 14:00 flat, which is 15 seconds off the average for my last workout!

Just popping in for a moment to say hi! I'll have to leave comments on everyone's achievements over the last week at a later time. My week 7 (day 1, 2, & 3) runs are completed. :carrot: These 25 minute runs are still not coming easy.

softballmom 08-30-2006 08:43 AM

Finished my Wk8 D1 Monday afternoon, and will attempt D2 today. Not feeling well, so not sure how well I will do.

I agree webweevil, the longer runs are not getting any easier! Congrats on finishing Wk7!!

I plan on staying on track ending my week 9 with a 5K benefit run next Saturday (9/9). Then I'm going to continue to train by adding more distance until I can do 3 miles continuously, then work on time. So there is still more to train for.

softballmom 08-31-2006 08:33 AM

I was able to run last night. Not sure that I can call it W8D2, since I ended up running just over 3 miles in 38 minutes. I did have a one minute walk midway which helped me to complete the extra mileage that I wasn't planning on doing.

Tomorrow night I will try for at least 2.75 miles to see how well I do. I would love to get a couple more 3 milers in before next Saturday's 5K.

Where is everybody? How are you doing on your individual programs?

webweevil 08-31-2006 12:48 PM

Very impressive softballmom. You took a one minute walking break and were able to run an additional 10 minutes more than was called for on week eight's schedule.

Eadavenp - glad to see you managed to push through "the wall" and move forward with your running. Good Job!

Finn - how is your knee? Did you manage to complete your run with the ache?

Shrinking Mama - I haven't had a chance yet, but plan to check out the Sonoma eating plan you recommended. Thanks!

I had to leave for work early this morning (I'm on lunch break now) and will try to get in w8d1 tonight. Since I've cut back on my food intake (now on day 10), I've noticed the importance of food to fuel my runs. Now I make it a point to have a snack of some sort before the run. If not, I get light-headed and start to feel like I am going to pass out. This happened on the last run and I had to walk 3 of the 25 minutes or risk falling and knocking myself out on the treadmill handlebars. :^: I set myself a maximum limit of 2000 calories a day but have actually been eating anywhere between 1900 and 1400.

Keep up the good work everyone!

I don't know what happened, but I tried to run last night and couldn't do it. I walked my 5 minutes and ran a mere 2 minutes when I suddenly hit "the wall" and had to quit. No problem I thought, I'll try again in the morning. Well, this morning, I could tell it wasn't going to be a good run. Maybe it's the reduced food intake, maybe the FL heat & humidity, maybe PMS, I don't know. So I decided to modify my run. Any run is better than no run, right? After my 5 minute walk, I alternated between walking 1 minute and running 1 minute. I did not change the speed setting, so the walking was done at the same speed as the running. I did this for 62 minutes plus a 5 minute cool down. I totaled 28 minutes running, just not all at once. I ended up covering about 3.75 miles and was sweatier than ever.

eadavenp 09-01-2006 11:35 AM

i hit a massive wall today. i did a good job on week 6 day 2. but the 25 min run today was a mess. i managed to run for most of it, but i think i walked on and off for about 7 minutes in the middle. i got in 12 or so minutes before i had to slow down and i actually had such a bad side stitch i had to stop for probably 30 seconds. im exhausted though, and i think that was part of the problem. im stressed (first week of school) and eating junk at nights. then i get all sugared up and can't sleep. i just need to settle into a routine to get back on track. add PMS to the mix and back pain and i understand why i struggled, but i still wish i had made it.

softballmom 09-01-2006 11:57 AM

Hey girls, I'm hearing you. This week has actually been one of my better weeks in a while - no ugly effort needed, mind games have been in control, etc. I think it is very wise to modify when you need to, esp during PMS weeks. We are all at those longer runs now which our bodies have to get use to. I think it will come for all of us, and I'm looking forward to watching my running grow as I train more and differently along the way. Just keep it up and don't get burned out or hurt.

I've been reading a few running books and one of the things that comes across in each, is that after about 6 mos those that are still working running programs into their lifestyle usually make it an ongoing activity - so that's what I'm currently working for: stamina to keep it up. Everything else (speed, distance) will work its way in, in its own time with training.

This afternoon is W8D3, so my goal is to run either 28 minutes full or 2.75 miles depending on my energy level and weather when it's time. We are having cooler temps, so I'm excited to see if that will help any.

Hello gang,

I've been missing for a week. I had more company and I let it mess up my running schedule. But, finally the company, vacations and birthdays are all over and I am trying to get back on track.

I left the treadmill behind and headed back outside to run today (after the terrible outside attempt I had a month ago). The plan was for it to be very relaxed and slow and just to get out there and do it with intervals if needed. So I did 2 miles straight without walking in about 25 minutes and didn't have too much trouble with setting my own pace. It felt very slow to me but I didn't want to push it. I hope to get up to the 3.1 miles outside in the nextweek or so. I applaud those of you who have been running outside from the start and through the heat. I really don't think I would have made it this far if I had attampted that.

A lot of you are running the longer distances now. Isn't it exciting? Now I know there are races coming up starting next week. Who's first?? You know we can't wait for the details.

Good job everyone! Have a good holiday weekend!

Pachyderm 09-03-2006 02:53 AM

Hello everyone, long time no see. My internet connection is very sporadic at the moment so I can't get on as much as I'd like. I only have a minute to post so I haven't read everyone elses posts, I'll come back later when I have more time.

It is the big day today - the RACE - Argghhh!

I am shattered as I got to bed late and then didn't sleep properly, and on Friday I had a terrible run where I REALLY struggled to finish 2 miles so I'm psyching myself out at the moment. My whole family are coming to watch, which is pretty nice of them, but also really embarrassing if I don't finish!

Anyway, must dash - I have to leave in 15 minutes and I'm not dressed yet :o
