  • LOL Lydia, you just want ME to get in a lot of steps so we can make the million step check march faster.

Actually if I get up and do much around the house I put on a pair of shorts with my nightshirt so I can count the steps. Believe me I don't let many of those steps go unnoticed or uncounted!!!

Deafinlysmart, are you going to the BIG list of smilies? I can't imagine why that one would not be there!!

  • Okay, okay, Lydia... I have my new pedometer AND I have on a pair of shorts with my nightshirt LOL. I don't like it all that well but I wanted one... it was only $15 and all the others the store had were Sportline... since I've had THREE of their $30 ones, all of which stopped working, I wasn't going to spend another dime on one! This one is Oregon Scientific... it will be okay until I can find one of the Omron ones. I really like the idea of being able to wear it in my pocket!!
  • Hi ladies:

I got my Omron from Wal-mart.com and was shocked to see what a lard a$$ I am!! The first two days (I didnt' do my regular exercise) I barely made it to 3000 steps I sit all day at work so this morning I forced myself to walk about 1,000 steps during my morning break. If my headache goes away, I'll try to do the same this afternoon. I was surprised at how easy it was to set the pedometer and I hardly know it's there. I hope one day to strive for 10,000 a day!!! Wow!! You're all an inspiration.

One question, for instance now mine says 2005 steps, 1057 aerobic steps. These 1057 are part of the 2005 steps correct? How does it distinguish between the two, I didn't press any buttons before I went on my walk? Is it that smart?

    Thanks. Maureen
  • Howdy there, Maureen! Glad you're enjoying your new pedometer! It's a lot of fun!

Walking shock, I think. I'm willing to bet we ALL had that shock when we first got pedometers. I know I did!

Yes, it's that smart . If the Omron detects a rhythmic pattern to your walking, it figures you're gaining aerobic benefits from your walk. If you walk continuously for at least 10 minutes at a pace of at least 60 steps per minute, it starts recording those as aerobic steps. Even if you take a brief intermission (under a minute) during that 10 minutes, it'll still count as "continuous" walking.

    Neat, eh?

The aerobic steps are included in your daily total. They are not in addition to your daily total.

Have fun walking! I bet you'll soon find yourself finding excuses to take a few extra steps!
  • Wow I definitely need to get an Omron. I don't like my new Oregon Scientific all that well but I wanted to get one right away.
  • I have an odd question!
I went on the tredmill today and walked off 320 calories, but when i looked at my Pedometer, it said that i had only done 120 or something!
    Which one do i believe?
Thanks alot of that, i am new to this whole thing!!
  • Hi, Carby!

Can't say for sure which you should rely on, treadmill vs pedometer for your calories burnt. Couple of things to consider:

    1) When you set your pedo up, did you have to enter your weight? Weight is a factor in how many calories per minute are burned. Say, for example, you currently burn 4 calories per minute walking at 3mph. Then you lose 10 pounds. Suddenly it doesn't take as much energy to move your body, so now you burn 3.95 calories per minute walking at 3.0mph. ((Numbers used in the prior example are solely for illustrative purposes))

    2) When you use your treadmill, do you set the weight? Same principle applies as described above.

    3) Have you cross-checked with any calorie sites? You may want to look up Walking, 3.0mph at your weight on a couple of different sites and calculate what the average is.

Your results from item 3 may help you determine which is the better number, treadmill or ped. Keep in mind, too, that your ped is probably giving you calories burnt from ALL the steps you took today, not just the treadmill steps.

    HTH.
  • Oh, about the Omron and its ability to detect aerobic steps...

I *think* it only detects the LAST aerobic steps you did. If you do two sets of aerobic steps, like, for example, you take a morning walk and an evening walk, the evening aerobic steps overwrite the morning ones. It doesn't seem to be cumulative, like your total, overall daily steps are.

Keep in mind, this is just what I *THINK* happens. I don't know for absolutely sure yet.

I'm going to put it to a test tomorrow and I'll post my results.

Either way, I'm still LOVIN' my new pedometer!
  • Okay I will be gullible and ask it... what is the distinguishing factor between aerobic steps and just plain old steps?
  • The way I see it, the distinguishing factor would be the amount of effort exerted. Walking aerobically, as in on a treadmill or on a mile neighborhood walk, should theoretically burn more calories and cause you to raise your heart rate more than, say, walking from the bedroom to the kitchen and back.

I think it's just in case you wanted to track those sorts of details. I just find it one of those "interesting to know" facts.
  • Thanks for the help!
I went to the gym again and programed my weight into the tredmill and everything and yet still i walked 400 calories at like 3.7 with uphill of about 11.5 or something and on the pedometer it was like 130 or something.
    It is weird.
I will try and look it up!
    Thanks again!
  • Curiosity prompted me to do a bit of digging. I used a 150 pound person (didn't define age or gender, just 150 pounds). Here's what I found:
    • FitdayPC: 322 cal/hour walking uphill @ 3.5mph

    • FitdayPC: 600 cal/hour "stair-treadmill ergometer" (I couldn't specify time)

    • Website A: 408 cal/hour walking uphill @ 3.5mph

    • Website B: 408 cal/hour walking uphill @ 3.5mph

    • Website C: 456 cal/hour on a treadmill @ 3.5mph uphill

    • Website C (again): 340 cal/hour walking @3.5mph

    • My Own Treadmill: aprox 500 cal/hour @3.5mph, incline 12 (I only did 2 minutes )

The interesting thing I see is that the calorie counters I used seem to differientiate between "walking" and "treadmilling". Treadding expends more calories, from what it looks like.

As for me, I just count it all as "walking" for recording purposes. If it turns out that I've actually been burning more calories than I thought all this time, well, glory be, that's great! I'd rather under-estimate calories burned and over-estimate the calories ingested rather than the other way round!

Whatever it means, as long as we keep on steppin', the numbers'll work themselves out!
  • Lena, you have WAY too much time on your hands, darlin'.
  • Yep yep!
  • Thanks alot for that!!
I think you are right it will settle itself out!!!
Thanks again for all the info!
